  • great video, yet again...

  • mikma was here

  • My first business nowadays is kicking back, enjoying life, and getting out of bed when *I* feel like it. My second business is trying to organize and schedule all the things I want to do that I never had time for when I had a job.

Being retired is a bitch. LOL

  • Thoughtful video as always, T.

  • Meaningful comment right here.

  • Good points, Tom, and I agree with them!

I'm in the business of writing about and collecting data about YouTube. I believe I have the largest store of historical data about YouTube, outside of TubeMogul and YouTube itself. Let's write a book on the history of YouTube!

  • Hey, Kenny! Great to hear from you. Would love to hear more about your book idea. Stay in touch.

  • Yes, Peter, as you say, things may have always been this way. Yet the game has changed and effective communication is now, IMO, a much more significant aspect of success than ever, not just for the shop owner, like yourself, but anyone. Good to hear from you. Hope you're well!

  • I'm in the business of kicking ass, and business is good.

  • lol, and I'm sure your communication skills are up to snuff as well!

  • Very thought provoking. Thank you.

  • Appreciate that. Thanks.

  • "... marketing as an intellectual discipline" ... sorry, I just had to pause and laugh at that one... Just my own prejudice from people I've known in the ad game.

But other than that, great vlog, and quite valid and true points.

But... don't go dissing technicians and mechanics - They're also in two businesses (at least) if they're successful.

  • lol, yes, marketing is such a discipline!

No, I meant technician/mechanic not as a noun but as an adjective, as in, doing the work simply using technical skills but not the "non-technical" communication skills I'm talking about here.

    Thanks, Ken!

  • i guess you're right. but i oftentimes find myself in situations where the other party (that i'm often 'forced' to work with) deliberately lets me do all the comm. work, and it's frustrating. and confrontation (implicit/explicit; subtle/direct) usually does not help. any thoughts on that? ;)

  • All that does is put you in the leadership role which, in the long run, will definitely benefit your career. Don't worry about the others, just keep getting better at communicating. Thanks.

  • I agree, communication is key in all endeavors.

  • Very true...I learnt this after many years and embarrasing situations...and getting upset with people...not anymore.

  • No doubt about it, learning this lesson is a big step. Thanks.

  • where can one get a shirt like that

  • Not sure. Got mine in 2005.

  • wow. why do i feel like i shoulda paid for that? its true, i am good at my job and i am sure a good deal of that is comm.

  • That's my goal here: give people something valuable for free! Glad you felt that way.

  • This is so true. I learned the hard way.

  • I think we all learn this lesson via bumps and bruises. In this vid I'm trying to help others see the need before those bruises get too painful! Thanks.

  • lol long story short? i am a babysitter.

  • And that entails effective communication because ____. I know there's an answer there, having hired babysitters in my life! Thanks!

  • First!
