Sam Kinison kind of lost his comedy timing, this really isn't very funny. The timing is all off, he's says 'ya know' all the time. Drugs definitely affected his performances, because his mid 80s stuff was pretty good

It sucks that we lost Kinison just as he was getting clean and sober and becoming a major player in Hollywood. He was one of the greatest, and is still funnier than any comedian out there today.
I saw Sam preach once. Holy shit it was amazing. He was the best preacher ever to come to a tent revival in a small southern town. He had people thinking the Devil himself was about to come get us all LOL

the main thing on this sam-v-dice debate was/is that "diceman" was an act of a guy who couldnt get much as himself till he became "diceman"...sam (from things ive read/heard/gathered) was sam 24/7...he admitted his faults & that he g\had this 2-sided persona (preacher & rebel)...which i guess is y -all these years after his death-sam STILL OWNZ dice...

I watched a documentary and one of the comedians that was with him backstage said that Sam snorted right after the show and looked up at him and said "its important that they THINK I'm off it." Him saying FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT in alot of his clips stems from part of his community service work. It said that he had to "promote" family entertainment...so instead of doing it he just repeated the words over and over :) That's so Sam.
@dannyd1572 Are you talking about the "Why Did We Laugh?" documentary? If so, that is very good! You are right about the drug addiction. His brother and Carl LaBove both said he was still using drugs until about the last year he was alive. I think it was his guitarist Randy Hanson who said in an interview that Sam was just telling us he was clean but he wasn't. He sometimes did drugs right before performing. Still he was amazing and super funny!
@abw73 Yeah. I bought a set of about 5 performances two weeks ago. When he started performing he was dead on with his timing and talked about a variety of things. Towards the end all he got onstage and talked about was drugs, his music, and whores. On top of that his timing was way off. It was almost like he was a sad shadow of himself. I wish he would have been around long enough so we could see what he went on to do. We'll never know.
@dannyd1572 Sam was just going through a bad phase when his material and performances were lacking. That's all. Let's remember that most comedians go through bad phases except maybe for the ones who don't take chances. You should hear how bad Andrew Dice Clay sucks in Vegas right now! His act is basically just yelling at the audience and picking on their clothes. It's excruciating but hopefully its just a phase for him too. (I'm not comparing him to Kinison by the way. Just saying...)

Have you heard the two part series on here when Stern called him up and told him how dried up he was and that he was a loser and asked him if he had any new lymrics to ring in the nineties with? When she said that, I knew it was time to leave the living room and head for the scene of action. I spent many a "lost weekend" in Philly in her company.

Also, another big misconception was that Sam hated gays or that he was disgusted by homosexuality. This is also completely false. One of Sam's closest friends who was only 2 feet, 6" tall was gay. He was in a wheel chair from Muscular Dystrophy (he was famous for his Jerry Lewis rants.) Anyway, he and his boyfriend (a black guy, sorry don't know his name) toured with Sam. The gay stuff was all shtick for shock effect. Sam loved people of ALL types unlike the religious fanatics who hated him. FYI
Interestingly, I read post after post like this one about "religious fanatics" all over the internet. I don't recall reading many posts at all by religious people criticizing non-religious.
I was in Tulsa when Sam's body was brought back in 92 and day after day I heard nothing but hatred & judgment from the 'Christians' around Oral Roberts University. So I remember first hand how vicious they were and still are. (There are pastors who are still ranting against Sam on other clips here.) So yes, despite Christ teaching us to love, so many of Christ's followers still don't practice love. I don't mean to paint with broad strokes. I have missionaries in my family who are loving people.

It was once said that if people don't want others making fun of their beliefs, then they shouldn't have such funny beliefs. That being said, Sam was a spiritual person. He just couldn't keep looking the other way at the hypocrisy of the church. There was more truth in his routines than in most sermons I've ever heard.

@FreeWhoopin1390 Also just on a quick note, sam was going to leave comedy, and go back into the ministry to begin preaching again, then his crash happened. It was but a mere month away where he was going to preach at a convention and stay in the ministry for good. And yes it is fact. Sam always felt guilty about leaving the ministry in the first place. But circumstances arose, and the cares of life drag you down.
@FreeWhoopin1390 I never heard that Sam was going to go back into the ministry. A friend of mine knew the family and was even there at the venue he was supposed to perform at the night he died. The power mysteriously went out in the club and later they realized it had happened at approximately the same moment Sam died. I believe in the spirit world. I'm just not convinced that Christianity is all it claims to be. If I was a believer I would lean more towards universalism than Christianity.
@Vegas01973 You should check out the interview with his brother. Sam personally told him he was going to go back. But yeh that thing about the power going out, that did actually happen. It seems talents like Sam, John Belushi, John Candy, Chris Farley, etc., are like meteors streaking across the heavens; we have a very BRIEF time to appreciate their beauty! Very spooky & tragic indeed, but such is the way of the world. Sam was definitely UNIQUE!

Also, another big misconception was that Sam hated gays or that he was disgusted by homosexuality. This is also completely false. One of Sam's closest friends who was only 2 feet, 6" tall was gay. He was in a wheel chair from Muscular Dystrophy (he was famous for his Jerry Lewis rants.) Anyway, he and his boyfriend (a black guy, sorry don't know his name) toured with Sam. The gay stuff was all shtick for shock effect. Sam loved people of ALL types unlike the religious fanatics who hated him. FYI

I was in Tulsa when Sam's body was brought back in 92 and day after day I heard nothing but hatred & judgment from the 'Christians' around Oral Roberts University. So I remember first hand how vicious they were and still are. (There are pastors who are still ranting against Sam on other clips here.) So yes, despite Christ teaching us to love, so many of Christ's followers still don't practice love. I don't mean to paint with broad strokes. I have missionaries in my family who are loving people.

It was once said that if people don't want others making fun of their beliefs, then they shouldn't have such funny beliefs. That being said, Sam was a spiritual person. He just couldn't keep looking the other way at the hypocrisy of the church. There was more truth in his routines than in most sermons I've ever heard.

@FreeWhoopin1390 Also just on a quick note, sam was going to leave comedy, and go back into the ministry to begin preaching again, then his crash happened. It was but a mere month away where he was going to preach at a convention and stay in the ministry for good. And yes it is fact. Sam always felt guilty about leaving the ministry in the first place. But circumstances arose, and the cares of life drag you down.

@FreeWhoopin1390 I never heard that Sam was going to go back into the ministry. A friend of mine knew the family and was even there at the venue he was supposed to perform at the night he died. The power mysteriously went out in the club and later they realized it had happened at approximately the same moment Sam died. I believe in the spirit world. I'm just not convinced that Christianity is all it claims to be. If I was a believer I would lean more towards universalism than Christianity.

Gods have been around forever and are always used to make us feel more important than we are, more loved, etc. Add to that our primitive desire for immortality and streets of gold and there are too many selfish reasons to buy into that stuff. But if there IS a God I hope he is better than the psychopath of the Old Testament!

They preach the word of God but ask for money and they are FILTHY RICH while taking money from the poor, in extange for a HEALING or BLESSING prayer. My Mom used to write to Oral Roberts and Reverend AL. I said Mom, pray for youself. You shouldn't have to pay for it. He is no one special to God than you are. We are not here to judge, Roberts should know that.

@sunseree Your mom sounds a lot like mine! She used to send money to Oral, Jim Bakker & TBN. The prosperity gospel ruined my family financially. We even lost the home that we built with our own hands. My mom always expected a financial "harvest" like the one promised in books like "Expect a Miracle" (by that idiot Oral Roberts) but instead all she got was about 100,000 in debt to O.R.U. The Roberts family are evil! Anyone who believes that those inbred rednecks are prophets needs serious help.

I dont listen to todays music, dont have cable (and love it), if i watch any tv its old shows i own like Mr. Show, old standup, kids in the hall, twin peaks etc etc. And the funny thing is... im only 23! But even though i was young in the 90s I was paying attention to the culture around me

Judge not and not judged, Sam was quite the cultural icon of his time and I would like to believe those who claims his soul was lost and fame killed him aren't in any position to know what this man's destiny was This man had faults just as all of us do and the only difference is, his faults were made publicly. Still, he was a decent human being who attempted to before his death, get his act together and I commend him for his attempt. In life, you win some, you lose some and he did win some...RIP

Listen to one of his sermons such as the one found on the special features DVD of 'Why Did We Laugh'. Sam's one of the most misunderstood performers in history so you aren't alone to assume he just liked to yell.
