Thank you mate! JP has a lot of tough solos, but everyone can nail them if they practise ;) In my opinion, the Train of Thought album has a lot of difficult things, so I would say something there ;)

I think Petrucci takes a day in the studio to record one solo, and I think he writes it at the same day. It really helps to have a good technique, it makes things much easier to play. I don't think he spent a lot of time creating that solo. You should check out a guitarist named Greg Howe, and his album introspection. Those things are way more advanced (and in my opinion, more cool) than Petruccis solos :)

And for those of you who havent heard "Stringed Sanity" by Greg Howe yet, I envy you, because I wish I could hear it for the first time all over again. The guitar is pretty easy to play on, and you'll get quickly used to it. But the sound is pretty average, nothing special really. If you want something with a more caracteristic tone, I suggest you get a fender or a gibson les paul. But it all depends on the style your playing. The pickups are 2 dimarzio humbuckers :)

Hey, thanks man :) I'm usually trying to figure out what John plays by ear, but if I'm too lazy, I'll probably use tabs. Then I'm practising the solo VERY slow with a metronome, and making sure everything is perfect and no mistakes. Then I boost the tempo gradually to make the solo faster and clean. If I miss on a note, I back down the metronome and do it slower, and repeat the process. I think that's the best way if you wanna nail a fast solo as perfect as it can be. Good luck!

Tja, jeg har spilt veldig mye dream theater de siste årene. Har studert opplæringsvideoene hans, lært omtrent 90 % av soloene hans så det begynner å gå seg til etterhvert da :) Man skjønner vel etterhvert hvordan han tenker og hvilke mønstre han spiller på gitaren osv. I'd definitely suggest a higher quality camera! The sound just gets too compressed with whatever you're using now and makes the audio quality pretty bad.

Thank you! I transcribed the solo using the program "Transcribe!", where you can slow down the tempo without changing the pitch:) This way, you can hear the fast parts really slow, so it's really useful.
