• how come I can't seem to see the comment rating buttons anymore?

  • Indeed.

  • FIRST!

  • Also, youtube should show thumbs down on comments again, instead of just showing the number of thumbs up.

  • Youtube should give you three options, 1) The original layout (for the nostalgia effect) 2) The current whatever the heck it's called layout and 3) The "Cosmic Panda" layout, and let you shift between anyone you want at anytime. But noooo, they want to enforce it :(

  • Two thumbs fresh!

  • HATE IT. YOUTUBE KEEPS RUINING WHAT WAS ONCE A PERFECTLY GOOD INTERFACE, NOW IT JUST PLAIN SUCKS.

  • Has anyone noticed that you'll see just thumbs up now?

Everywhere I view videos on YouTube, I'll only see comments with just thumbs up. I don't ever see thumbs down comment. Is YouTube trying to encourage the idea that there is right but there is no wrong?

  • I don't understand. For example if let's say... 10 people like your comment, it will have a 1 green thumbs up next to it? When ever I like a comment, it's rating does not go up.

  • indeed :p

  • you made the first comment ever on youtube

  • rating down doesnt work at all! have u seen a bad rated comment? WTF??? and the comments are all messed up! I mean in whatorder are they posted. I cant believe youtbe made it so cheap and brainless.

  • @pierrerichard7777 In the last youtube update that changed the player format, I think they made it so there comment ratings can not go into the negatives; most likely to discourage trolls

  • Kinda pointless now you can't see comment ratings unless they're new

  • i don't know i always liked that thumbs up idea, but i dont' like the guy who come up with it,.... if you wanna see the guy who emailed youtube asking them to add comment rating system just youtube UglyLarry.

  • Now if only youtube could get rid of the 500 char limit, the captcha "commenting limit exceeded" every 2 or 3 comments, and implement real threading so long threads actually were logical to follow, it would be a huge improvement over what we have now.

  • they coppied metacafe

  • mabey so any people liked it,they gave it thumbs up.but +3500 is a lie

  • I've seen where Fred commented and he had like 4000 thumbs up. XD It was hilarious. Probably a screw up.

  • everything's possible in this world of magic and joy and joyness!

  • Look up numa numa. The comments have like +23000 and stuff. Check it out.

  • how long does it take for your good or bad comment to even show up? i give ratings all the time and it seems when i see the comment that i rated it hasnt changed...wtf?!?

  • It's cool enough. I would wish other forums had it.

  • Although only people with low self-esteem would be offended or even care. It's a really rather pointless addition to youtube nonetheless.

  • This new system is flawed since there is no such thing as a "good/poor" comment. There are only opinions. It should have been "Agree or disagree" since anyone's perception of a "good" or a "poor" comment can vary for whatever reason. At least "Agree or Disagree" is direct.

My definition of a poor comment would be a comment with a large amount of grammatical errors. However even the most sophisticated comment can be marked as a "poor comment" simply out of spite/hate or poor judgment.

  • It's basically impossible to respect someone's opinion now. Even though they weren't really respected in the first place.

  • send methe link then.i dont believe you.

  • the most popular videos, can reach 2000 up.

usually when the owner doesn't allow more comments, people have not much of a way out but rate.

    and ok.

  • Who's to decide if a comment is good or bad? granted, some are obviously intentionally offensive but I have seen normal comments given the thumbs down for no good reason. It promotes web bullying.

  • It's funny. I came here for the first time in a while, and couldn't help but notice how many people had thumbs-down next to their comments, even comments that were not nasty. It just looks totally ridiculous. Hm, maybe that's the point?

  • agree

  • DON'T RATE ME BRO!!!!

  • love it

  • if i really hate a comment, i give it a thumbs down, refresh, then give it another, and continue on until i am satisfied

  • You can just mark them as spam...

  • I couldn't disagree more.

the comment rating system may be the worst thing to happen to youtube.

  • arent comments there to express your thoughts? or your opinion to a video? why should people rate your opinion.your supposed to express yourself freely

  • yeah this thumbs up and thumbs down stuff is kind of annoying

  • can others see who gave the good or bad ratings (thumbs up or down)? can they see who "voted" on their comment?

  • no you can't tell.

  • i think the rating thing is ridiculous, because if you have too many thumbs down (and sometimes only because people disagree with you) your comment doesnt get shown unless you click on show all comments, its very hard also for video makers who would prefer if the comments on there vid were in chronoagical order like they were before, and if replys were put underneath the comment that they were replying to instead of at the top.

  • The new comment is stupid. All it takes is one asswhipe to give make 20 Youtube accounts and make all the comments on your video -10. If the maker of the video thinks that the comment is bad, then they should be the one to take it off, not a bunch of random strangers.

    -Jake

  • The same arguement can be made about video ratings, or commenting. If someone wants to go through the trouble of creating 20 accounts to do so, nothing we can do will stop them.

  • I prefer the old style, even though it has some bugs. Such as the way they inform you someone has replied to your comment. You have to search for it. It should take tou directly to the section where your comment was made and the reply. This way take too long and I leave a ot of comments so I never know which one someone has commented on without time comsuming search.

  • i agree with you. the new system is great for filtering haters, idiots, spam, and perverts. it's great.

  • YEAH! Agree with you 100%. This is the way WE can do sth about stupid comments.

  • I dont like it because many people assume that if it is a negative comment toward the video then it must be hater and not a form of constructive criticism such as "this video was alright but could be better if u added..."

  • personally I like the new system. If there wasn't abuse of it it would be even better, as far as I have seen hater comments are thumbs downed, which is good, if you didn't like the video fine, don't curse the person out, this might make those haters think twice. Might.

  • It sucks because only the popular opinion gets heard.

Take a look a VenomFangX's videos, there about religion. When atheists post there views he censors there comments. So the only thing they can do is bury down all of his supporters comments.

    Thats just one reason.

  • I don't like this thumbs up/down system because if you are thumbed down too much, your comment is hidden. So when someone makes a statment that not everyone agrees with, it is censored.

  • People can abuse the thumbs up/down system,so its pretty useless...

  • That's what people used to say about the video rating system. People used to abuse it, but now it seems to give a fair rating on most people's videos.

I think YouTube needs to have a threaded system, make replies go to where they're supposed to and put comments in the order they're supposed to be.

  • @Stex25 its pretty much how it is now...

  • i think that hte idea was good... ive always wanted to rat out on all the spammers (so damn annoying)... but the implimentation was sub-par... people arent going to sotp saying mean things just because other people are giving them a thumbz down

two things id like to see happen are making the default setting for comment filtering "show all comments" and an indication of how many thumbsup/thumbsdown "votes" have been "cast" for each comment

  • now they have fixed the initial problems with the feature i'm not as bothered, i can see what youtube were trying to do, and i hope it works to get rid of all the haters/spammers

  • It's been on metacafe for ages too.

  • ppl just do just boo ppl for no fuckin reason. watch as i shall now get a shitload of thumbs down

  • Hey, FrostedLane. Nuh - uh!

For a while now, you have the most thumbs up! lol.

At least you can see in some corners of the YouTube community there's some decent people out there who get what's a good comment and know it deserves a thumbs up.

  • dats cuz ppl always do da opposite of wut some1 else is planning on

  • Please don't type like that.

  • I like the rating, BUT I hate the way the alignment is fucked up.

  • Thumbs up on comment filtering ;)

  • i don't really know its purpose. thumbs up or thumbs down, i first saw this thing way long ago from urbandictionary dot com. youtube copied it.

  • I use Opera browser and the addition of the new ratings causes Opera to go very slow, and it freezes completely for 2 seconds when I load a page. For that reason I've had to block the comments, which means I also lose the youtube logo, the "director" graphic, and it also blocks the "rate video" buttons too, but I can live without those.

  • Actually blovking it doesn't really work. By browser still lurches to a halt when the page is first loading. Maybe a fault with this versionn oifmopera or maybe the page is badly loaded??

  • typo, I meant "badly coded".

  • I din't mind the comment rating thing

  • It sucks donkey balls. YT ruined the comments IMO.

  • if you want to kick guys ass who came up with this idea feel free to do so his id name is UglyLarry

  • those of you who dont know what iam talking about UglyLarry came up with this rating comment idea. hate his idea and hate him

  • Why do you hate him? Is it because people can now bury your idiotic comments? Actually, I'm going to do it right now.

  • I"m cool with it :D

  • I don't mind the comment rating as such. As long as it isn't abused. What I don't like is that when I click on "View All ## Comments" I don't escape the Pages. I want it all there!

  • They put it too close to the spam link. Too easy to click that by accident.

  • I do like it (:

  • loathe it. i dont get it and theres tons of empty comments like wtf?

  • I wonder how long before they don't apply ratings to video owner's comments so that their haters don't hide all their comments on them.

  • Video owner's comments don't get rated at the moment.

  • That was fixed quickly back then.

  • **People will abuse this

  • This works somewhat, but will abuse this.

  • sucks...stupidest idea that youtube has done so far...fuck youtube...

  • I like this new feature. If I watch a featured/popular video, I will probably want to view only the average or above rated comments because I am so sick of seeing all the lame hater comments. Maybe first I will glance at "all comments" just to see what all opinions are. Haters ruin youtube and to filter them out of my viewing is a pleasure! Some people will abuse the thumbs system, but most will not, so it will balance out, as stats always do.

  • It's a good start in fighting all those spam comments. It could work if everybody rates the comments with the same mind set. Giving thumbs down to spam and hate comments. I'm to cynical to believe that it will work but I think you tube is finally doing something in order to help the community.

  • Ugh. Well, I like the whole rating thing. But the thumbs and Christmas colors are gonna start to be annoying. Couldn't there be a.."Show ratings" option or something?

  • I plan on ignoring it. If I agree with a comment enough to respond, that's a good enough "thumbs up."

  • then what was tonights update about???? anyone???

  • i think youtube should start working on their web design than this, its so friggin ugly

  • So peoples opinion is now gonna get rated. How sad

  • ~That is soooo true! Lol

  • This thumbs up and thumbs down shit sucks

  • Back to the drawing board, Youtube. Thumbs down on this new comment system.

  • I think the feature incredibly tacky. I don't need to see a bunch of thumbs and numbers telling me what people thought of my visitors' (or my) comments. If they have an opinion on a comment...let them respond with their own comment. The new system is ugly, distracting, and I agree that you'll find a people voting for arbitrary reasons ("that's a stupid username")...thereby rendering this feature useless and inaccurate.

  • You mentioned hater comments... If there are lots of haters on a site, they might rate the other haters with top grades, but I guess the viewer would then have to know to select thumbs down to filter out the haters. It might be useful.

  • The problem is that haters can easily abuse this. People don't rate comments the same as others and in turn makes the system flawed.

I rate based on weather or not the comment had any thought put in it. Even if it is just "This video sucks" Sure it's a better comment than "GO FUCK YOURSELF AND DIE" or "Post this five times or else..." comments

  • Judging someone's thoughts on a video.. rating what someone thinks? I'm sorry but I really dislike the idea of rating people's comments, I think that rating a video is good enough :)

  • Why is it defaulted to showing Poor (-5)??

  • yeah, i thought the same thing.

  • Because a lot of comments from -5 to 0 are still worth reading. It's so that one person can't put it below the viewing threshold.

  • When a comment is hidden that always makes me curious to peek. And when I do, it's usually not that bad, at least to me. Maybe clashing personalities are getting into this?

  • seems like a good idea to me.

  • (1/2) Boy, are you quick! I'm not so sure if I like this yet. People are bound to use it in order to express disagreement, so I'm afraid critical comments and unpopular opinions will start to disappear along with abuse and spam. Also, while I myself feel under increased pressure now to write meaningful comments (which is of course a good thing, by and large), those people who are inclined to work against the system in general will probably make a sport out of trying to get the most negative

  • (2/2) ratings -- and out of randomly downrating other people's comments. Still, whenever I see it on Digg, this kind of soft moderation seems to work amazingly well, and it surely beats word filters or global moderators or whatever else they could have come up with. I guess time will tell. I'll probably set it to «all comments» anyway. Now if they just fix the comment ordering, at least on the All Comments page... newest first, pah! :-)

  • I think it's dumb. anyone can just rate anything negative just for fun.

  • I think its good too, and if you hate it, just change it too "all coments" and all is back to normal!

  • Personally, I think it's a clear case of fixing something that wasn't broke to begin with.

  • I want to shake hands with the man/woman who made this.

  • It's a great way to filter out the crappy/spamish posts.

  • Ahhh the irony!

  • Justice shall be served!

  • nice video! i think that this is an okay idea, except for the fact that many youtube users will abuse their power to rate the comments. some people will think its funny to rate all the comments poorly.

  • The only thing that worries me about the comments are people. There are always really immature people out there. In lets say a debate video, people are going to comment about their opinion. Some immature person will come along and rate it low because it wasn't their personal belief.

  • Your comment has passed. Congratulations ogier1! You win a cuddly toy.

  • The problem with YT is once it "fixes" one thing, it screws up another. Now, when I click to view all comments, I get only a fraction of the actual comments posted. Grrr. -- Matt

  • Tell me about it, Matt. YouTube giveth, and YouTube taketh away. It wouldn't be YouTube otherwise! lol.

At the moment, some comments aren't posting. I guess YouTube still has kinks to iron out as it's still really new here. I can't imagine how long it will take now to load comments for one of the YT 'celebs' videos. YT now loads ALL comments at once.

  • Btw, Felix, I just noticed that there's a typo in the video, you forgot the T in style: digg syle youtube comments.

    ;)

  • You're right! Haha, I need more speeellinging practice. Syle indeed. :p Glad you noticed it too, touched you paid so much attention to it ^_^

  • I was surprised no one mentioned it :p

  • If I didn't already have enough to do, not only do I have to watch and rate the videos, but now I have to read all the comments and rate them, and then come back again later to see how well my comments are rating!! :P

  • You're pointing out something interesting here. Unless you remember where you posted comments, you won't be able to read them again. Wouldn't it be much easier if youtube makes a page for each user, showing where they posted, and showing if it got rated. Maybe they can display on the profiles whether the user has a positive or negative rating, etc.

  • DutchGirl107, you can tell where people have commented and where you have commented. Go to the top of YouTube and click My Account. Go to View Comments and their you go, all the videos people have replied to you, or you have commented on.

  • Wow! I didn't know that!

    Thanks a lot!

  • It doesn't show the ones you've commented on, only the replies to you.

  • Yeah anonymous59, I realized that a while ago and I wish I could of edited the comment.

  • Please wait a few minutes to vote again.

  • This is a great idea, it can show people what other Youtuber's think of their comment instead of commenting all the time.

  • I like it. For once Youtube has done somethin right :)

  • I'm not sure what I think, rating videos is great but comments? Hmmm...

And I'm also not sure yet how the filer system works, I looked at a video earlier and it has defaulted to the 'poor' option, it will be a pain if I keep having to move it back to 'show all' and the responses seem out of order. Nice video though.

  • Hey 21st CC, on Digg (the website) they have global settings to set your personal filter standard.

I suppose YouTube can do something like this (if they haven;t already, I haven't checked) as you're right in that it will be a pain to have to keep changing from the standard default.

I can't seem to post . com. The box spazzes out.

  • Yeah, that's the spam filter (as I'm sure you already have figured out, but I feel compelled to respond to 2 month old comments so I'm telling you anyway :P)

  • is ok like, is gonna take some getting used to

  • Geesh, you must have pumped this out pretty quicly or you have some insider information.

  • I know, he scared me. Musta been up all night, lol

  • Hey ADT, it took 20 minutes since it's only subtitles :) I would vlog instead but I'm not as brave as you guys who do that ;)

  • I'm already seeing it abused in my comments section, perfectly fine and innocent comments being rated down by tools who think it's funny or something. I wish it was optional.

  • I've already seen it abused in you comments section too.

I'm a bit scared that people will rate people down just because they have a different opinion and such.

It's a nice feature, if everyone is decent enough to respect others and their opinion.

  • It's new and all those 'tools' are messing with the new feature.

I'm giving YouTube and the community the benefit of the doubt in their ability to make the new comment ranking system work.

Something simple as making it easier for those who watched a certain amount of videos/post video to rate comments, and harder for those those who just joined to spam/give negative comments, e.g. with CAPTCHA.

  • I think it is cool.

  • I like the concept and welcome it to YouTube, but Digg didn't invent user moderated comments.

  • good

now all we need is a spammer filter!

  • I like it. Another thingee to click on.

  • Yup, TC, another reason to procrastinate on YouTube. ^_^

  • Hey, did youtube change the place where the replies go as well? B/c I replied to you, Felix, and it is above your comment? Don't get it? :P???

  • Lol, I know it's silly isn't it? That's what I meant by threaded comments would be better.

    eg.

    Comment 1

    --Reply1 to comment 1

    --Reply2 to comment 1

    --Reply3 to comment 1

    -----Reply1 to Reply 3

    -----Reply2 to Reply 3

    ---------Reply 1 to R2 R3

    --Reply4 to comment 1

  • Yeah, I know! Or post the replies UNDER the comments, but not like this! I read the upper comments first, and go down. This is annoying! They should do threaded comments like you said! It's not that hard to make, I think.
