@andrelebaron During the beginning of the battle there was no snow and at the lower altitudes there was foliage still on some trees. Temperatures off the plateau were up to 50 degrees warmer. Green leaves were from something else not November.
My Uncle, Richard "Ritchie" Penn, 1st Marines, Sniper, 2 bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, 17 days in Chosin. RIP 5 years ago. God Bless Uncle Dick, we miss you, and we will hang our flag in your honor. Semper Fi
My cousin a Marine was here. He is now in Hospice Care. Seldom talked of it. Actually he had no clue he was due a bunch of ribbons and medals since his papers were modified to show it after he was already out of the marines for over a year. (He never joined any veterans organizations) . I found the supplemental records and have informed him of his honors (presidential unit citation -etc) but too late to get them presented to him now. These soldiers went through hell, but the Chinese paid.
The book "East of Chosin" describes the ordeal of the Army troops on the east side of the resevoir. The unit was decimated and Lt Col Faith was last seen sitting upright in a vehicle dead.
My father Joeseph Marino and Bill Marino were frozen on the chosin resvior just 45 miles from each other and did not know it. My father won the purple heart and one of the good conduct medals in this battle. I have a news paper clip dated feb 20 1952 that three brothers my dad bill and lou Marino were on leave feb 20th 1952 all three by chance were sent home on that day. My birth day is feb 20 1970 I am fighting a spinal birth defects case I am 40 I have yet to be paid.
