I think it's a very interesting design. Beauty relies on the eye of the beholder. I for one think that it is an appealing start, simple, efficient, does the job. Of course it can evolve into something else that can be more sophisticated later on, but that'll come along when production get's started and there's money pouring in I think. Well done, electric is the way to go.
very space efficient (look at the wheels in the corners)
Simple to manufacture (curves only in one plane)
Material efficient, strong and light (Mazda found that straightening the chassis sides makes big improvement in strength to weight)
In fact, this is potentially the design approach that is most practical. Also note that the curve allows reasonable aerodynamics. The styling exagerates the flatness at the sides and the waistline could be straight.
100-150km range? While it might be good for EV, it's still pitiful. For it to be useful for me I'd have to manage at least 400km, preferrably close to 800km. I drive long distances, and until an EV can manage that they are not interesting.
Furthermore, I gather that you need to recharge it at your home. That would mean that only people living in houses or renting a parking space with an electric outlet would be able to manage the recharging. Not too common, is it?
How much is this car expected to cost? From what Ive read Nimh batteries can cost much less then the Lithium being pushed. Toyota Rav4EV are using Nimh and appear to be great cars.
You are right, private industry would not have sent us to the moon, it might have studied bees if it was useful. Private industry is more concerned with things we actually need. Things like the telecommunications, the steam engine, the internal combustion engine, the battery, television, plastics, the list is too long for YT.
Even the "inventions" you mention were mostly developed by private industry at huge expense paid by the government. The point is government funded science is inefficient
telecommunications would be just a black att phone if it weren't for government mandated and funded endeavors such as space technology. cellphones, computers, rockets, batteries, fuel cells, all technologies pushed forward by government funding. privately funded research is too limited in scope as it has to yield returns too soon. the two types of funding work very well together...both essential for a leading front.
Yes its true, these cars are not ready for prime time. Still I have been watching the development cycle of high end batteries and they seem to double capacity every 18 months. Give it a little while and we will have practical electric cars without sacrificing safety. If the market wants something it will be sold. Its basic capitalism. As soon as someone can make a profit off of the cars they will be sold. The challenge is getting the government out of the way and approving EVs for all roads.
Getting government out of the way? If it weren't for government sponsored research and development at universities, NASA, and defense companies, none of this would ever come to fruition.
That is abundantly absurd. I work with both private and public science researchers. The consumer driven private sector is far more efficient. If the government gave back the taxes they sucked out of the private market you would see far greater achievement by now. It is like a comparason of private postal services vs public, or private schools vs public, or private heath care vs public. For example in socialized Europe medical reasearch lags far behind the US.
Hell, private industry would never have attempted to go to the moon or studied the flutter pattern of bees or chemical reactions that esoteric achademians study which later prove to solve great engineering, biological, industrial problems as well as provide technologies such as teflon, integrated circuits, satelites, aerodynamics, metalugical, biological, chemical advances. The pay off for the taxes has been to put our country at the forfront of many technologies. No need to discuss further.
are you serious? it's electric dude, you can't put a turbo on an electric motor, it doesn't work that way. before asking about mods, howsabouts you ask about getting one? seeing as they're not really that common.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the car is gay so is the music and electro powered cars are gay 2 they really tried to but what if u own a electric car in the future and next day you want to drive to work you drivin true the your street and then suddenly it stops you forgot to recharge it costs 8 hours to recharche so you you cant do a quick tank you electric cars are the future i dont think so ;) try another fuel
Rickapp, were you born stupid, or did you have to take drugs to get there.
Run out of gas in your car because you "forgot" to fill it, and how long will it take you to figure it out, walk to a gas station, get gas, walk back, then take the gas can back, etc.? If you're too stupid to remember to plug the car in when you get home, buy a bike.
The fuel isn't the problem. The cretin who wrote that merde is. And the only thing "gay" around here is you (assuming you meant dull and impotent.)
people forget things i bet it will happen sooner then you think i think its just not so practical i only give my idea of how the future car should be powered you allways will hold a negative side on whatever fuel might be but i hope they try to make that negative bit as small as possible
people lock their keys in the car too. i guess that means keys are useless. lets do away with all the keys because they might inconvenience some people due to stupidity.
seriously, if you cant remember to plug a plug into the wall. you have other problems bigger than getting to work on time to worry about.... such as brain tumors and Alzheimer, haha!
by the time electric cars go mainstream they will have next gen lithium packs in them that can take a full charge in 10-20 minutes.
Homophobic comments like that suggest you've got something in your own closet.
As to fuel issues, 1) You'll run out of gas and be inconvenienced it you're too stupid to refill the tank, too. Butt there ARE solutions -- battery pack exchanges, for example. Spend more time on solutions and less on negativity, we'll all be better off. A LITTLE vision wouldn't hurt any either. Look past how things are to what they can be.
Perhaps you should start with your communication and language skills. "finding problems that need to be solved." "English -- Do you SPEAK it, motherf**ker?" (Pulp Fiction).
Identifying problems is important. Nay-saying is just a waste of effort and a drain on those actually doing something more than complaining.
Then don't buy one. That's a personal choice. But slamming the thing just because it's not for you isn't at all productive. I wish the naysayers had some constructive contribution, maybe an e-car of their own, since they know better?
This is like watching footage of a grandma driving her Buick LeSabre to the corner store set to the music of Hawaii 5-0.
For people like myself trying to patiently wait for a real EV to show up, it's just another nothing car "planning to go into production sometime in late 2010..."
Hear hear, plus it looks so weird it scares people who are actually looking around for an EV. Discourages them because they want to see a normal looking EV, something that looks like a gas car.
If that were the case we would still be driving around in gas driven buggies with a fringe on top, so they looked like their predecessors. We did for a while, then the shape evolved. No doubt this one will too.
Well then, ole Humpty-Dumpty, get your shell on out to the garage and build you one faster.
Mini has the Mini E in production now. There are several others besides the Tesla available. Quit yawning, do a little homework, and ya might just find out things aren't as grim and gloomy as you like to claim.
looks a little funny but I don't think it's ugly. some small cars are too ugly to drive but this isn't it. it's perhaps a bit girlish but so are many cars
The Tesla cost a lot right now, because like every new product, they have to recoup as much of their initial investments as possible. But as with anything else, the price usually comes down after they're able to mass market it in the black.
E.g. A new VCR used to cost over a thousand $, now you can get one for a little over $50.
There are plenty of solutions, also leading-edge, that are nowhere near the price of a Telsa. As low as $9k, but the average seems to be between $20k and $30k USD. S.Africa has the "Joule" coming out, very impressive specs and designer. 125-250 miles per charge (extra battery pack for 250) and seats 6, with acceptable acceleration and 84 mph governed top speed. $25k... Works for me.
The specs are excellent! That range is very impressive! The only drawback as others have pointed out is the looks. It looks very modern - perhaps a little too modern?
I can see it looking stunning on the streets of Le Mans, Vienna, or Paris for example but I couldn't imagine it winning hearts in places like Johannesburg, Dallas or Sydney for example.
Why is the music so good? Jeez, I thought it was going to morph into a James Bond car that sexually satisfied all women within a 4 kilometer radius just by driving nearby.
Looks like a goddamn shoe. Could you idiots in the electric car "business" just take a VW Jetta and make it electric? Is that too much to ask? Why do you feel the need to make something that either looks so gaudy that no one will drive it, or so expensive so that only rich people could afford it (and even then, they won't buy it because they can afford 5 miles to the gallon if need be)?
