Deftones were all over MTV about the same time Korn were. They've had singles on the radio and videos on MTV. Shit I went to this concert! Cox Arena at San Diego State. It was the first time I saw Korn at a large venue instead of small clubs like Soma and realized..fuck they really made it big. It sucked not being on the floor and having to be in a stupid seat.

Not gonna lie, steph isnt that great. You said that munky and head will never be on his level. The riffs in any deftones song are extremely easy and by no means hard in any way. Munky and Head have way more complex guitar parts. Not saying that there hard either but more complicated then anything from the deftones.

Well Deftones aren't really Nu-Metal but were close to that style. Yes, Korn can be identified as Nu-metal for the most part, but they themselves have rejected that term at times. Who told you they were. I acually like Nu-metal so it's not a diss when I say Deftones aren't a Nu-metal band. They lack specific features of Nu-metal. Hell RATM is close to Nu-metal aswell but definetly not a nu-metal band. Rapping to guitars is usually rap-rock or rap-metal (rap-core) Nu-metal has more in it's combination. Deftones in their early days were simple a New-wave twist to thrash and hardcore punk, with some rap, though most of the time Chino isn't really rapping anyway.

They made a demo tape in 1993 called (Like) Linus, which was based on unreleased songs that had nothing to do with nu-metal. It actually first came out on the album Andrenaline in 1995, where they re-recorded few of the other songs from the demo, and they made some new ones, where they focused on the alternative and experimental genre. Korn were actually the first band to release a complete nu-metal album back in 1994.
He slurs his words with ethnic influenced vocals, it gives the impression of him rapping. He usually just blurts out spoken word peotry tighly to the rhythmn at times. Obviously H.R. has a great influence on him, as does other differing ethnic based pronounciation and slang. Look at songs like Root, which obviously are middle eastern inspired. He has admitted to growing up around varied music and people which influences him.

Deftones existed before Nu-metal was created and an actual scene, and formed through the culmination of rap and rock/metal coming together. Which is why they are usually thought as being Nu-metal for slight resemblance and friendships made with prominent and rising Nu-metal acts. But for those that really like Nu-metal and wanted something close, I would suggest Deftones, RATM, and Faith No More.
The culmination of rap and rock/metal was not the only reason why nu-metal was formed. Rap is a small part of the concept. Nu-metal is based on alternative metal, experimental rock, groove metal, and grunge. You would obviously put more genres into it, because nu-metal is like a clearance without limits.
The idea of nu-metal is to combine singing, heavy tones, turntables, keyboards, dynamically sounds and lots of melody. An important things is syncopated riffs played on distorted guitars.
Yes many of the feautures you stated are infact what Nu-metal is, but Deftones didn't have that amount of mixture to their sound to be comfortably in that style of music. So they have a dj, that doesn't make it Nu-metal, especially because Frank doesn't even follow the typical role. He focuses on minimalism and lo-fi influence not pure scratching or beat juggling.
What you say is superficial. Can you express it further? Frank Delgado does an excellent job just like the DJ in Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Crazy Town. They have their own style, and that's it. It is pure nu-metal.

And in an interview regarding Maynard recording Passenger with the band, Chi said at least Tool do something unique and different, yet kno one calls them Nu-metal. How the hell could you posibly miss the fact Deftones don't really like that term applied to their music.. Chinoohas always been vocal about it.
I already have watched almost all interviews with both Chino and the band. I have some DVD's and YouTube clips with them. You need to dive into what he is saying literally. He is saying: "I am mostly in the new wave music", "we took some of the heaviness of it and added some new elements", and finally: "Lots of people are saying that we're the new style of metal. It is exciting hearing that."
These interviews was made in 1998 where nu-metal wasn't really known and defined like today.

He also expressed that while it is exciting, he didn't like it because he felt like it would become a fad here today and gone the next. He even mentioned that people started to see it as ok, Deftones and Korn, and that it's the same thing. He even made a mean spirited remark about Nu-metal before distancing himself from that scene of music.

First off regarding Frank, I'm not dissing him so stop trying to convieniently twist what I'm saying for the sake of making yourself appear right because it gives you points in your mind. I never talked down on Frank. I described his musical style with the band, which isn't scratching or more beat juggling. Shit I went to this concert! Cox Arena at San Diego State. It was the first time I saw Korn at a large venue instead of small clubs like Soma and realized..fuck they really made it big. It sucked not being on the floor and having to be in a stupid seat.

Not gonna lie, steph isnt that great. You said that munky and head will never be on his level. The riffs in any deftones song are extremely easy and by no means hard in any way. Munky and Head have way more complex guitar parts. Not saying that there hard either but more complicated then anything from the deftones.

Well Deftones aren't really Nu-Metal but were close to that style. Yes, Korn can be identified as Nu-metal for the most part, but they themselves have rejected that term at times. Who told you they were. I acually like Nu-metal so it's not a diss when I say Deftones aren't a Nu-metal band. They lack specific features of Nu-metal. Hell RATM is close to Nu-metal aswell but definetly not a nu-metal band. Rapping to guitars is usually rap-rock or rap-metal (rap-core) Nu-metal has more in it's combination. Deftones in their early days were simple a New-wave twist to thrash and hardcore punk, with some rap, though most of the time Chino isn't really rapping anyway.

They made a demo tape in 1993 called (Like) Linus, which was based on unreleased songs that had nothing to do with nu-metal. It actually first came out on the album Andrenaline in 1995, where they re-recorded few of the other songs from the demo, and they made some new ones, where they focused on the alternative and experimental genre. Korn were actually the first band to release a complete nu-metal album back in 1994.

He slurs his words with ethnic influenced vocals, it gives the impression of him rapping. He usually just blurts out spoken word peotry tighly to the rhythmn at times. Obviously H.R. has a great influence on him, as does other differing ethnic based pronounciation and slang. Look at songs like Root, which obviously are middle eastern inspired. He has admitted to growing up around varied music and people which influences him.

What the hell are you talking about? I never said RATM is Nu-metal? I used them as an example of a band that is close to Nu-metal in style but not quite that, much like Deftones. Deftones are an experimental/metal band at best. And Deftones usually forwn on the common perception of their music as Nu-metal. Deftones existed before Nu-metal was created and an actual scene, and formed through the culmination of rap and rock/metal coming together. Which is why they are usually thought as being Nu-metal for slight resemblance and friendships made with prominent and rising Nu-metal acts. But for those that really like Nu-metal and wanted something close, I would suggest Deftones, RATM, and Faith No More.

The culmination of rap and rock/metal was not the only reason why nu-metal was formed. Rap is a small part of the concept. Nu-metal is based on alternative metal, experimental rock, groove metal, and grunge. You would obviously put more genres into it, because nu-metal is like a clearance without limits.
The idea of nu-metal is to combine singing, heavy tones, turntables, keyboards, dynamically sounds and lots of melody. An important things is syncopated riffs played on distorted guitars.

Yes many of the feautures you stated are infact what Nu-metal is, but Deftones didn't have that amount of mixture to their sound to be comfortably in that style of music. So they have a dj, that doesn't make it Nu-metal, especially because Frank doesn't even follow the typical role. He focuses on minimalism and lo-fi influence not pure scratching or beat juggling.

You should watch some interviews and read a bit about the band. Chino always had a bad taste in his mouth about being labelled Nu-metal most of the time. And in an interview regarding Maynard recording Passenger with the band, Chi said at least Tool do something unique and different, yet kno one calls them Nu-metal. How the hell could you posibly miss the fact Deftones don't really like that term applied to their music.. Chinoohas always been vocal about it.

I already have watched almost all interviews with both Chino and the band. I have some DVD's and YouTube clips with them. You need to dive into what he is saying literally. He is saying: "I am mostly in the new wave music", "we took some of the heaviness of it and added some new elements", and finally: "Lots of people are saying that we're the new style of metal. It is exciting hearing that."
These interviews was made in 1998 where nu-metal wasn't really known and defined like today.

He also expressed that while it is exciting, he didn't like it because he felt like it would become a fad here today and gone the next. He even mentioned that people started to see it as ok, Deftones and Korn, and that it's the same thing.
