i met Jane in Starbucks near the Chelsea hotel last year. She walked past me and smiled, twice! I had to stop her and ask her: are you Jane Siberry? and then she told me all about how she had changed her name and sold all her stuff so that she could move about and be freer. She is one of the hidden greats of the 80's. I love this song, its so quirky and fun! thanks Jane for some great years of music. love ya!
I hope that her album The Walking will get a second life someday and that it will be
known and highly appriciated in wider circles, because I think it.'s one of the most
beautiful records ever made. On my record-shelf it stands next to Bach and Miles Davis. Over here in Holland only a handfull of people know her name, and those people don't work in CD-shops, I checked. It's ridiculous that such an impressive
talent is totally unkown in large parts of the world. Let's act, and help her.
This woman is one of THEEEE most unique and brilliant musical talents.
In this version of the tune, she manages to tell the story of these two people in a mere two and word sparse verses. And the groove!
Speckless Sky and Bound By The Beauty are phenomenal albums. I admit I lost Jane at 'Maria'. Did not care for that at all...what I call aimless oooh-ing and aaah-ings over jazzy covers of twinkle twinkle, mary had a little lamb and happy birthday, etc. (hyperbole to make point)
the 1st time I saw Jane -- at a small club in Burlington, VT -- the show was as much fun visually as it was brilliant musically. with the back-up singers and their props, giant hammers and such. to this day, she continues to amaze. so grateful here.
Re: Geddy Lee haircut. Jane is present in the audience when Rush were inducted into the Juno Awards Hall Of Fame - as seen as a bonus piece on their Beyond The Lighted Stage documentary!
I love the bass playing on this, it's very free, but it fits right in without trying to take over. Was that Dave Switzer - ?
And I absolutely die for Ken Myr's guitar playing - understated here, but a perfect chime in support of the melody. He was born to play with Jane - did he ever do much with other artists?
Wow, I am so happy to find this video. I love jane, I have for years. Here we are in 2010 and I still find this song stuck in my head at times. :) I am so proud to be Canadian and share Canada with so many great people like her.
Haven't seen this video in ages. The album this is off (The Walking) is one of my top three albums ever, and that's including the many, many hundreds of classical, jazz, pop, rock, world music and avant-garde recordings I've ever listened to. Thank you for posting it. I don't know if I wish Jane Siberry had become more famous because, like so many people, it might have ruined her - but I do wish that she could have more recognition. She is a rare genius. And this is a great silly song.
Yeah, I agree...she should be better known but KD Lang has brought a lot of people to her in the last few years, which is great. And KD is very generous with her praise of Jane...
And thanks to Jane I have discovered the wonderful Karin Bergquist of Over The Rhine...and so it goes on!
Jane Siberry is my hero. She lives such an authentic life, writes such beautiful, introspective music and then she can still write silly stuff like this. She's timeless and brilliant.
I've seen her several times, but not yet as Issa. I hope she comes to Minneapolis again soon.
I was at a party that was winding down, back, oh about a thousand years ago. The video for Mimi came on. There were voices and commotion in the room that I soon tuned out and focused on Jane/Issa. I have not stopped focusing on her since. She is a star that I look for when the seas get stormy and i need to get the boat home again.
and I'd sell my soul (if it wasn't sold already) to whoever can post Jane's "Slow Tango". Bonus points if you have the 90s Canada Life ad that it was in.
early spring 1988 - i read an article about her- ventured to a local shop in san antonio and bought =the walking= her voice still sends shivers thru my spine
I know. Ive heard her music in the 80's (High school) now i just love her voice and music. I was like 13-17, heard her music off and on, now I Love Jane. im 37 now.
#Wow - never seen this before. Thabk you so much for posting this. Early Jane Siberry is just a world that was horrifically missed - bar Canada I guess. What I love in this video how Jane owns the camera - you have no doubt she is the focus, and looks like the big star she should have been. Wonderful.
It's sooooo good to see this video again!!! :) Jane is the ultimate artist... I admire her deeply and have been following her career and music since 1984... Jane, you are absolutely WONDERFUL!!!
Ditto. Thanks for posting this! I have no idea why, but I've always loved this quirky/ecletic video. Say what you will about Jane, but she's never been afraid to take chances with her music and the visuals.

Why is "The White Tent, The Raft" not added to this great list of her songs?

I love her music, although I don't listen to it too often because I find too emotional.
I think she deserved more commercial success. I wonder why she hasn't become as popular as Tori Amos.

No wonder she is turning religious
No one can be that talented and funny without needing the direct aquaitance with the universes guiding principle.
Otherwise shed just explode
and none of us want that do we.
She is strangely cute in that costume too
Herbidaecious 3 years ago
But that presumes there is a guiding principle. Any number of talented, funny people don't think there is.

I would like to do tequila shots with Jane Siberry for some reason. I am not sure why.
Probably because I am strange.

Everyone in the band is incredible especially
Anne Bourne the keyboardist. Jane is beyond
incredible. This song always gives me a lift and I heed the advice. Little kids love it.
The set is so Peewee's Playhouse.

I must have been around twelve years old when I first saw this video (back when "Much Music" was still around.
She is still an inspiration in my song writing, and (enforced) required listening for my co-workers and patients.
