  • SHE IS FROM AMERICA GUYS, SHE IS TRYING TO FAKE AN ENGLISH ACCENT AND FAILING.

  • another yank wanna be english.

  • @TheFletch5011 - by her accent, I'd guess Canadian.

  • As I was trying to decide whether or not to click on this video as it came up recommended after I finished another video I noticed the account name "robynisrarelyfunny" and decided that this was clever enough to warrant a chance.

    I wasn't disappointed. Very nice video. :D A'subscribe.

  • also, though, jokes aside...perhaps you could be careful with phrases like "...a history that never happened"; it WAS a world-wide war, after all and the nation suffered plenty.

  • oh...someone who drinks more coffee than i do!

  • My goodness keep calm !!!!

  • Calm down, dear.

  • does anyone else think her voice keeps going in and out of a kind of english accent?

  • Keep calm and lay off the caffeine.

  • you're not keeping calm!

  • Thumbs up if you want to punch this annoying face IN THE FACE.

  • you are so annoying

  • You are so beautiful!

  • @penarodrigotube keep calm. she's not going to give you any. carry on

  • @ItsMrBang unfortunately I know.

  • Keep calm and love one direction xxxxx

  • Keep calm and carry on

  • Is it fair to ask if you're an anglophile?

  • Your blouse is adorable! Where did you get it?

  • I'm English, and I've got a copy on my wall. For those of us who are British, it does have a historical mythness of it; the stereotypical Tommy with his stiff upper lip, drinking tea as the bombs fell.

You did an wonderful job of explaining its history. I never realised it had spread so far. Bravo!

  • I don't think the invasion of Cybermen would happen, but I am sure betting on Dalek.

  • Fish fingers and custard?

  • I think of it as a way to get through stress in life. Keep Calm and Carry On is applicable to almost any tough situation.

  • coffee or tea and probably some kind of starch he didn't want to eat but his wife forced him.

  • Coffee. Seems like a very simple guy.

  • Tea and crumpets - he had to be an uber-Brit that day to discover something SO FREAKING ENGLISH.

  • I am almost certain that he had oatmeal. Oatmeal just has a tendency to cause people to stay calm.

  • french toast made with Hula bread with cinnamon, icing sugar and blueberries. He also had nutella hot chocolate.

  • I am positive he had toast! :D

  • That was awesome. I mean, I knew it had to do with WWII (we're just finished WWII in history class and we talked about it a bit), but now I can impress my friends. :D

    I think he ate...SCONES.

  • Ooooh this was really interesting. I originally saw the "Keep Calm" quotations on tumblr and such. Nice to know the history behind it =)

Now I can feel like a hipster when I tell my friends about it =P

  • I'd say he may have had an English Beakfast with eggs, bacon, beans and toast (with tea, off course) but it was WWII so maybe they couldn't get their hands on all the products. In that case I think he had at least toast or bead with probably marmalade which conserves really well. He had most likely tea, he's British. Maybe he could get an egg once in a while and bacon once a month only.. :)

  • Probably some felix felicis potion :D

  • Oh and thanks for the info, I had no idea what this poster was about. It looks like a ministry of sound cover or some shit.

  • sometimes you sound british and other times american.. I can't work it out. Yummy voice either way tho :-)

  • I'd say scrambled eggs with a side of buttered toast with a cup of tea.

  • Bacon. It's the breakfast of champions. Plus, I could never really "keep calm and carry on" without bacon. Just saying.

  • I think he was very busy that morning, worrying about the state of his shop and only had time for a quick cup of tea for breakfast. Despite his wife begging him, "dear please do eat something!"

  • Peanut Butter on toast, because, what else would you eat for breakfast! :)

  • I have this little image of him sitting at his table with a hot cup of tea and some oatmeal, thinking about the long day of work he has ahead of him. Or maybe some toast.

  • I bet he ate some waffles

'cause waffles are the best thing since tea

  • Full English Breakfast and some Heinz Ketchup :D

  • English muffin (with strawberry jam) and tea. Seems appropriate.

  • Im pretty sure he was eating a nice heaping bowl of awesome covered in sprinkles and bacon. And maybe some black coffee.

  • I would say oatmeal but that would be strange.

  • This is very cool. I do love that sign.

  • I reckon he ate an apple and a ginger nut biscuit and then some (battenburg) cake all with a cup of tea.

  • I love old propaganda posters... they are just so fascinating. :) I bet that the designer ate oatmeal with bits of apple and honey. That sounds yummy to me anyway. :)

  • Lol, my first thought was tea and toast and then I looked in the comments and saw that everyone else apparently had the same idea=P But seriously, I think he was probably just a regular guy who had a lot of awesome inside, just like each of us. And just like most of us, we can't always foresee the effects of our actions. When his posters were being destroyed in mass, I bet he never imagined so many would have this on their walls, or that a youtuber would be asking us what he had for breakfast...

  • I want to say tea and toast, but I can't help feeling that this idea must have come as a stroke of inspiration on an above-average day... so maybe he had tea, bacon and scones?

  • I knew it was a poster printed by the British government during WWII, but I didn't know all that. That's so cool.

  • He ate toast. That is all.

  • Probably a full English and a cup of tea.

  • This is great! I knew that the poster was historical, but my knowledge of it was along the lines of "WWII propaganda slogan" and nothing beyond that. I never knew that it was lost until 2000. Yay for history!

  • I'm guessing the clerk had an english muffin with butter on it and some tea!

  • Comment removed

  • he probably eat on that some toast along with some tea which were provided by rations the tea would be loose and maybe some jam and butter for the low amount of bread

  • He was probably eating whole-grain crackers or something like that. I've heard they're like a sedative and make you really sleepy...and calm, I guess, hence the poster! :P

  • I dunno much about English breakfasts, seeing as Doctor Who doesn't offer a lot of those scenes, but I'm going to go with a simple toast and orange juice, or perhaps some coffee.

  • He probably ate an English breakfast with tea!

  • You're a Hufflepuff today. :)

  • He totally ate bangers and mash! That's how he got the idea, it banged & mashed up his brain to formulate the phrase.

I'm glad to have learned even more details than I had vaguely known on the poster. Thanks!

  • Toast, and tea. Most likely, I hope. That's basically what the British live on, right?

  • I want to say oatmeal. And tea, of course.

    Is that suitably British?

  • Being 1939 he would probably of had a pack of Woodbines (cigarettes popular amongst people during WWI and WWII) and a pot of tea while mulling over his sketch pad in a cloud of thick smoke, choosing the design that would never be seen for over 50 years.

  • A pocket full of sunshine.

  • he ate oatmeal because it's cheap.

  • I'm gonna go with food. He ate food for breakfast.

  • Hm. Did he eat eggs?

  • Man, you are a crazy good speaker.

  • I think he ate some oatmeal. I'm pretty sure that's a key point in keeping calm and carrying on. He may have had some nice toast as well.

  • Oatmeal.

  • I think the clerk ate a raspberry scone. But that may just be because I would like to eat a raspberry scone right now…

  • He probably ate some sort of scone and a piping hot cuppa tea and was instantly struck with inspiration.

  • I believe that he ate laverbread, a seaweed purée which is then mixed with oatmeal, formed into patties and fried in bacon fat, and cockles

    my reason

because I'm going to imagine for no reason at that he is actually welsh and that is what the internet said there traditional breakfest is

cockles is like a clam in the picture if your wondering.

  • Ughhh It depends where he lives in England?

If it's the south ( Ie London ) He would have had a crumpet with tea

If it's the north ( Ie Manchester ) He would have had buttered toast with tea

If it was a sunday or saturday, he would have had a full English Breakfast!! SO MANY ALTERNATIVES

...What's wrong with your accent too? It's like a strange mix between American and English?

  • He probably had something such as cereal.

  • He had a breakfast of *insert stereotypical British breakfast here* with a nice, heaping mug of tea. Because, you know. He was cool like that.

  • Porridge? I can't think of anything that would fit a traditional breakfast by today's standards spare porridge.

  • He probably had a big breakfast, since he new he had to do good. Toast with butter and jam, eggs, and bacon or sausage. And tea. Obviously.

  • I bet he ate porridge.

  • He didn't have any breakfast, he was too worried about the soon to come war. Tossing and turning all night as he thought of what terrible things could approach. Instead he just thought of the slogans all morning, thus skipping breakfast and making the poster.

  • He ate some fruits, to keep calm and carry on.

  • He definitely had breakfast tacos. Only someone who'd had breakfast tacos that morning could come up with that phrase.

  • I think he stayed up all night trying to decide what the poster should say. In the early hours of the morning, he decided to eat breakfast. Due to his lack of sleep, he wanted to try fish fingers and custard. Shocked at how delicious his meal was, he proceeded to tell everyone about his discovery. Everyone he told looked at him as though he was crazy. "You need to calm down," they all told him. He ultimately decided they were right. That evening he decided to keep calm and carry on.

  • Green eggs and ham

  • Hmmm, He ate a a bowl of books i dare say. ;)

  • wheaties!! the breakfast of champions

  • I bought one that says "Keep Calm and Carrie On" for Sex and the City :) It has a high heel on it in place of the crown!

  • I think he kept it simple with some oatmeal. Or that's what I would do in that situation. It that what they call it in England, or is it porridge? I suppose he might have eaten some porridge, then.

  • Very good, Robyn! I knew a little of the background of the poster before, but I don't think I knew about the discovery of it!

Hrm ... I would guess ... maybe a few slices of toast, buttered with marmalade or butter ... and maybe with some Earl Grey tea. Two sugars and a drop of cream.

    - Jason

  • This was an interesting video.

And he ate eggs. Because apparently everyone but me likes eggs for brekfast.

  • I think tea and not much else because in a time of war, he had to tighten his belt

  • Hm... possibly tea... but I have a sneaking suspicion he had coffee. How american.

  • I would say he probably had eggs and toast with his morning coffee like every other day.

  • Keep Calm and DFTBA.

  • I knew the history :D i would say tea and crumpets

  • I have a distinct feeling for breakfast he was "Dancing at Discos, Eating Cheese on Toast..." Oh no wait, that's a song by Kate Nash... Well, let's just say he had cheese on toast for breakfast... maybe with a glass of milk... i love milk... So I think everybody loves it too... lol...

  • Tea and a digestive.....

  • Well, Kevin had toast and coffee, probably as he did every morning after arriving at work...

  • Croissant and coffee......

I loved how you explained the history of this poster. Many people are not aware of the magnificent history it carries

  • I think he ate green eggs and ham...

  • He probably ate a sandwich out of his carry-on luggage on a plane.

  • he deffinatly had at least two brand muffins, with little raisins in them, with a large glass of chocolate milk, made with actual melted chocolate, mixed in with a little coffee. he then proceded to work on a full blatter. He was on his way to the bathroom, when suddenly his boss appeard, ordering him to create a new sign to apease the masses, but he really had to pee, so he related his situation to england's panic, sketched the slogan, and proceeded to the toilet, keeping calm and carrying on.

  • I have a keep calm and carry on mug :P

  • He definitely ate a breakfast of toast with jam and a cup of tea. Do you eat anything else in England?

  • I prefer Keep Calm and Harry Ron

  • He definitely ate some nutella.

  • a full english - course :) !

  • I think he ate toast with the butter side down for breakfast after reading The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss. He decided to try eating it that way instead of butter side up and liked it as you can really taste the butteriness with the butter side down. So that is what I think he ate for breakfast.

  • Fruit Loops. Just because they are amazing and when you find something that will change your life your breakfast must have been quite amazing. xD

  • Crown fries

  • Well he was English, so I hope he had a proper English breakfast! Porridge, eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, hopefully a small steak. All washed down with lots of tea!

  • I think he was eating a healthy breakfast of GENIUS!!

  • i dont think he ate breakfast that day because it came to him so fast and he was eager to share it

  • He probably had porridge, healthy... tasty... rationed... porridge :)

  • Waffles, he definitely had waffles...

  • Hmm, I always wondered how so much "Keep Calm And ..." merchandise was able to be created and sold, considering copyrights, etc, but I've been to lazy to look it up. So thanks for letting us know.

  • he was probably eating something incredibly normal (i think water and a crumpet) not knowing that his simple idea would be worth so much in the future

  • Tea and crumpets!

  • maybe he ate ice cream for breakfast!!! i feel like it mmust have been something weird like that

  • Your new mustard colored blouse really suits you :) Thanks for the lesson; somehow I'd always imagined that slogan came from one of Britain's many witty television shows. The real life happenstance is much more interesting

  • I think he probably had tea and toast with jam! Mostly because I am hungry and that sounds delicious xD

  • Probably some Raisin Bran, mostly because I adore Raisin Bran and I have no sense of when things were actually invented.

  • I think he ate egg and soldiers. I just think it would be funny for him to have eaten soldiers then found a poster from the war.

  • The man who designed the poster had NO idea what to eat for breakfast.Being a perfectionist,he started to panic over the pending decision between a crumpet and a bowl of porridge(after all, he was stereotypically British). After minutes of staring at his pantry, he heard a voice that said "Keep Calm...And Carry the crumpet On your train because porridge is messy in moving vehicles!" Inspired to choose the crumpet, the man thanked the voice and promised to use part of the phrase someday.THE END.

  • I think he was eating eggs with coffee, and as he was pouring milk into his coffee he spilled some. He became very upset and started crying. His wife came in and cleaned up the milk asking him what was really bothering him, as he was not known to cry over spilt milk. He asked how was he expected to look strong for his children with the war going on. His wife said, Keep Calm and Carry On with daily life. What a smart wife he had!

  • I would say a triple decker peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but I don't know if peanut butter existed back then.

  • I think he was eating a cranberry scone with some tea

  • I think he was eating blueberry waffles topped with just a bit of whipped cream and syrup and he had a steaming cup of tea next to him at all time while designing the poster!

    Have a wonderful day!

    -Karley

  • He probably didn't eat anything at all, and must have gulped down his tea really really fast!

  • I love this video. It's like history class... but fun. You're awesome. :-)

P.S. I think the anonymous clerk who designed this poster ate oatmeal the day he designed this poster.

  • Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light !

  • 0:09 my life <3

  • YouTube Subscribed ...check...Twitter following...check..

That morning the clerk I think was eating toast, eggs, with some tea. He was probably thinking of ways that he could make money without luck then he thought of those posters. :)

  • I want to win the poster but am not willing to do two of th 3 required tasks... Maybe I should take a deeper look at my desire to "win"?

  • he ate toast. What did you expect something amazing, well he wasn't very hungry that morning

  • "retro futuristic nostalgia" ok, I REALLY like that phrase =)

  • This is really interesting, Robyn. Thanks for sharing! :)

  • That morning, the clerk was especially peckish. He wanted something special so he ate one fantastic banana, two slices of toast, 3 boiled eggs, and about a pound of hope.

  • He was eating a very very old cheese and so he created the poster to calm his nerves so that he wouldn't freak out at the terrible indigestion that lay before him.

  • pancakes.

  • I think he ate toast with jam

  • Simply tea.

  • For breakfast, he probably had tea and toast since food rations were starting to be put in place.

  • Invasion of the Saibamen?!

  • @kinslay3r Cybermen not Saibamen. One is from Doctor Who the other is from Dragon Ball Z

  • toast with jam

  • He didn't eat anything because at the time rations were in place.

  • He ate a classic english breakfast with extra sugar in his tea :)

  • He ate beans in the morning. The later gas cramps and his having to finish the work day was the source of inspiration for the poster.

  • Eggy in a basket and earl grey tea

  • I dont think there's any doubt about it... The anonymous clerk ate eggs and bacon. NOM NOM NOM.

  • custered and fish fingers

  • Toast with jam with a cup of breakfast tea that had a bit of milk and two lumps of tea.

  • This is very interesting, Robyn! I knew it was commissioned for disasters and such during the war, but I was unaware that it was never used at the time. Thanks for teaching me new things! :)

  • strawberry poptarts. Definitely.

  • keep calm and carry is is pretty much british, although we dont all wear bowler hats and live in a fairy tale, the rest of the worlds veiw of america in times of dispare is to get angry and blow shit up in any direction...

  • That was a fantastic retelling of unknown history. Thank you for that. Also, he ate bacon and eggs, with a cup of tea. Which later led to an even lesser known poster, "Keep Nom on Bacon and Eggs" It would have also been a success, I think.

  • No question that he ate oatmeal. The calmest breakfast food. He was carrying it to do the sink, to wash the bowl, and he stopped, realizing the combination he had made would one day lead to a pop culture phenomenon. Or maybe not...

  • He was eating a bowl of crisped rice cereal, which was all the rage at the time. When all of a sudden two cops break down his door and hold him a gun point and after some convincing he is able to show them that the snap crackles and pops were his cereal and not small arms fire. The cops thanked him for being so calm about the incident and he told them to carry on the good and vigilant work.

  • rice

  • (I've been to Barter Books! It's a great shop, not too far away from me either - I got my Keep Calm shirt there, and a copy of Nicola Barker's Behindlings. #best)

As for the clerk and his breakfast, he must have accidentally spilled his morning tea, the awful event inspiring him to create a brief, stoic epigram on how to deal with crushing setbacks.

  • realistically tea and toast

  • milk and beard.

  • He must've eaten a bowl of LUCKY charms!

  • Full English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, beans, black pudding, eggs, fried toast, tomato and mushrooms with a cup of tea and a glass of orange juice :D

  • Given that the poster was commissioned with a degree of secrecy, and given the distinct lack of craigslist in 1939, I'd wager it was designed by a friend of a friend of high ranking civil servant, which would likely make the designer a wealthy person by birth. In which case, his breakfast might have been something like: full english breakfast, followed by sliced melon/pear, followed by a cup of tea.

  • Gryffindor T-shirt? Nice!

This being England in 1932 I'm going to say a full English breakfast with bacon, sausages, fried eggs, black pudding and toast. With a cup of tea of course.

  • He had corn for breakfast and then, just as in John Green's Zombicorn, became a zombie.... which along with the saving the poster for the darkest of times is why it wasn't printed......zombie's aren't good press.

  • @CaptainQuestionable *zombies

  • buttered crumpets and tea from a blue and white striped mug.
