anna withers and judge cathy.....you must think we were born yesterday if you think that you can fool us that you didnt know the engineers had cooked the books and were using the wrong procedure.....you've shown us all that royal commissions are a crock of s h i t and reach their conclusion before they are even held.......you're f u c k ing history withers...you and robertson!
are you guys frickin kidding me? You're talking about the music and how awesome it would be to raft down it. Do you have any idea how many people died because of this? Southern Queensland is still being rebuilt and faces massive infrastructural problems due to this, not to mention the years of personal problems and grief.
Without the release through the spillway this dam wall would have eroded its embankment and given way causing complete failure of the entire dam. In my opinion that is the long and short of it. Its full now though :) In hindsight though a more gradual release probably would have served the flood plain a better chance.
Nice vid, it's always feast to famine and vice versa where water is concerned in Australia, while you guys up there in QLD were underwater, so were we done here in Vic. The drought is well and truly over.
@mrmepis I agree we probably haven't heard the end of the story ... but there is something that people downstream of Wivenhoe Dam need to think about - their arses were saved by the fact that Perseverance and Cressbrook Dams near Crow's Nest in the Toowoomba Regional Council area were both nearly bone dry before the big wet. Perseverance Dam overflows into Cressbrook, which in turn overflows into Cressbrook Ck which merges with the Brisbane River below Somerset Dam.
@mrmepis Had our dams been full, things would have been in a much worse state of affairs than they were. Perseverance Dam overflowed about 2pm on 7 January and Cressbrook Dam spilled over on 10 January - the day before the big storm. So by the time of the storm, Wivenhoe was receiving water not only from Somerset Dam, but from Cressbrook Dam also, together with the other tributaries of the Brisbane River.
Very well put together footage...Great music to match... Very controversial... I wonder if they will act sooner to release water when the next big wet is forecast?
more drama please^^

Me too Kaoss92, it was the best sound I had to convey the power I witnessed during my short visit to the Dam that day.

Thank you all for your comments. To hold or release is a very serious responsibility. I fear we have not heard the last of this story.

@mrmepis They simply had to release the water, otherwise they would have destroyed the dam, releasing all that water and more anyway.
Still, I guess they did flood Brisbane. I have no problems with what happened.

Thanks for the upload. Brisbane dodged a bullet. If it had kept raining they would have been so stuffed.
