the delorean is would get beaten on the corners as well by the general lee, cause the engine in the delorean is underpowered(131 bhp), unlike the charger(stock:425 bhp) which makes the delorean slower than the general in the corners.

About the proper replacement engine for the Delorean, the best matches I've found are the Buick GNX 6 cyl. and the Lotus Esprit V8. I did all I could with the stock PRV but without NOS, it's difficult getting past that 225 hp mark. Getting a powerful, compact V8 that's not heavy enough to throw off the Delorean's fragile center of gravity is a challenge. The Lotus twin-turbo 3.5 does it best.

People always think that the DeLorean is as powerful as a Corvette or a Porsche, but the reality is that it has a shitty 130hp PRV (Peugeot, Renault, Volvo) engine. However, the engine "sounds" that were dubbed over the real engine in BTTF came from a Porsche engine.

It's impossible for them to be the same. The Esprit is mid engined, whereas the delorean is rear engined. at minimum, it would require complete re-engineering of the back end of the chassis for the engine to fit.

To counteract the different weight distribution, the front would also require a lot of work.

Obviously you don't know, that IS most likely a 1969 Dodge Charger, hard to tell from the video quality, and people have modified it's mopar cousins ( superbee , coronet, GTX ) to look like the "General Lee" The Charger isn't a new car, it's been around here and there since 1966. The 68-70 version is my favorite. And it most likely ate the DeLorean alive...

@davektm5257 Remember when they were made, right in the middle of the gas crisis. It was one of the first fuel injected cars though. It had competitors such as the weak 305 at the time. It was quick only at that time... Delorean knew it was underpowered and searched for a real solution, one that did not increase fuel consumption. The solution was to turbocharge the Delorean. He sold some turboed, and then had a twin turbo prototype by some company I believe called Legend. What could have been...

The Charger may have won the race, but the Delorean is still the sexier car. I wish the Delorean would get more respect! Who cares if it wasn't the ultimate haul ass car. It's still awesome in my opinion. And you can get one now from the new Delorean Motor Company with new/unused parts and a stainless frame. You can also upgrade the engine with a stage 2 performance mod with 197 hp.
