Then it's impossible for anthropogenic global warming (AGW) deniers and their infinitely simpler mental models, using just natural language, to declare with such absolute arrogant certainty that AGW is NOT happening.

You are full of s&&t. Computers have managed to direct Voyager to pass by multiple planets and moons in our solar system. So, yes - they CAN prove to us that AGW is real and serious.

  • @mphello Man made? Of course, given the horrible destruction of forests, pollution, but also given the fact that climate change has ocurred centuries before the industrial revolution that's also food for thought. Is all this that is happening today regarding climate only man made?

  • You would need a supercomputer, that could manipulate data as fast the earth does in real time. You are dreaming if you think computer models can solve the climate cycles and predict accurate results. Not happening, sorry star trek fans.....

  • if i were back in time soo long, when the first Computer existed, my computer would be a Ultra computer, even is this computer is shit :D

  • Download BOINC (Berkley open infrastructure for network computing). you can use your computers spare power to process models from the met office. they take forever, but youre doing the same stuff.

  • nasa's super computers currently run on linux.. hmm wonder why. haha

  • linux have better data management. like networking, programming, etc.

  • I was being a bit facetious, poking fun how windows sucks. In fact I use ubuntu karmic for most of my computer use.

  • desktop sized super computer....

  • Yes! Finally a rig capable of running crysis on ultra high with full anti aliasing past 150 FPS!!!!! Thank you NASA!!!!!!!

  • I am not sure if I completely get this. They essentially argue they can do modeling with less computational cycles now...ok, so we theroetically limit ourselves to less complex models per se

So why does the hardware component come in? A supercomputer in a little box, nothing bigger than a desktop PC? No. I think they developed some mixture of optimized hardware and software that work together.

I don't think they have found new algorithms to bring down complexity and we still need supercomputers

  • A supercomputer of 30 years ago when climate research was in its infancy had less computing power and memory than an entry level cell phone in today's world. Also, as I understand it, the idea is to test your models at lower resolution on desktop hardware before committing to an expensive run on a supercomputer. The movie doesn't make these points clear.

  • the question is can it run crysis?

  • not since they all run on linux right now.

But definitely crysis needs to be ported to linux.

  • I'm surprised they don't grid compute that app, so that when you aren't using your desktop super computer it can help someone else with something they are doing.

  • Thanks

  • Scientists don't even bother dealing with Macs.

    Win.

  • @treeunit212 because they would need 3 times the funding. Loss

  • uhh they could not install the hardware, therefore not getting anywork done.

    WIN

  • @evi0blackeagle you must love higher taxes, you must love higher government spending or your a little rich kid. my point is is that mac is 3 times the cost....

  • ya i kno. i am not for macs lol

  • Exactly.

    Win for PC.

  • @treeunit212 thank you i rest my case..

  • As do I. :)

  • Desktop Super Computer!

I cannot wait until that hits the market.

  • it already did, pentium 4 based PC has more power than CRAY 2 supercomputer

    new GPUs have even more

  • I believe the USAF bought 2 thousand Playstation 3's for this same purpose. Cheap supercomputers.

  • @VAR1UM

    I believe you're right.

  • i would not call ps3 super computer. i know it has 7 cores but still it is a console.

  • I suggest looking into "Folding@home" and the PS3. Rather interesting, to me anyhow. Nothing really new but a simple explanation of computer clusters.

They (USAF) do not use just one. Like i said they bought THOUSANDS of these things and run them in 3-5 hundred clusters. It's a cheap alternative to other hardware.

You're not an XBOX fanboy are you? Your not gonna start trolling me over video games are you? You seem to be developing a reputation on this vid already.

  • lol i am a bit of a troll. no i love playstation, i think it is great but i would not call it a supercomputer even in large clusters. in my mind it will always be a very good entertainment unit and video-game console

  • fair enough. ;)

  • yesssssss! Just joined USAF, time to get my game on, lol

  • What can that statement mean? No climate models work? At all? In any way? Are you sure?

  • Kufr what i mean is that there are so many variables that we just don't know. and what is happening now adays is that we are telling the models what to produce.

we are running the models to prove global warming is happening.

netsoj is correct. the furthest a model can calculate weather is only a few hours to day

  • @evi0blackeagle

Actually it's growing science that needs further study.

  • They certainly do "work" it's the accuracy that's in question. The accuracy will improve. All it takes is the testing of predictions over and over again. Trust me they have no illusions of predicting the future they can only figure probabilities.

  • they work in the sense that they spit something out. but by the ppl who are trying to prove that global warming is happening are also making other assumptions that ppl are not hearing about.

But i should not be saying this here as this vid is to show the power of these computers and not the models themselves. the computers are great but the models really need to be improved.

In my comment i should have specified what i meant.

srry. lol my post is -10

  • LOL. You are forgiven.

  • Another layman of the field telling us he knows more about what scientists are thinking or capable of then they themselves show

If you have the inside scoop on the scientists thoughts and research then let us all in on the secrets

But if your going to throw around failures like the deniers trying to use emails to show something thats not there, or other lame and easily debunked decade old arguments and making blanket statements about how climate is too complex for you to understand, spare us
