@robblindsay Every DC character seems to change in every iteration. Some remain relatively the same while others are changed a bit more drastically. In this case Kilowog was probably changed to look more like a real alien along with Abin Sur and Kanjar Ro.

Well, I dug through my old comics to answer the question when Superman lost to Swamp Thing/GL, & the issues that I am talking about are Swamp Thing 79 (Dec 88) [Superman is on the cover] after Superman protects Luther from Swamp Thing, & GL & tights get into a fight GL 122 Nov 79 [1st series printing] where Superman is being tag teamed by Guy Gartner & General Zod.

I hate to break it to you but Green Lantern beat Superman. If you ever read the old comics, they fought before the 2nd movie came out in the 70s, & GL won. Superman tends to dislike anyone that has more power than him which causes friction depending on the superhero. Superman likes to be the alpha dog & since GL has a lot of swagger sparks kind of fly between them. But them again, Superman lost to Swamp Thing. So who knows!
