Hm, not bad, though the octave definitely seemed to have dropped in comparison with the traditional shamisen. It's almost a bass instrument in this manner!
And the electric guitar sounds to much as an electric violin or electric cello that were invented first than the electric guitar. the sound is because the distortion and other efects , the elctric guitar does not sound that way by itself, and effects can be put to any electric instrument as long as it has a jack. It is no way a property of guitars, although the mass culture has teached that to us.

didnt like that atall a crap sound, stick to the tradtional Shamisen it's sound can envoke so many emotions where as that sounded like he was trying to shred on a guitar, what a twat.
2. Why don't you actually look for Kevin Kmetz on youtube and make an informed decision about his playing ability? When you find him and see what he is capable of and the wide scope of the music he plays, I hope you will withdraw such comments...
Amazing! No matter what you think of the way the electrified sound in represented in this video, which was affected by the fact that it was recorded by the cam mic picking up stage speckers from a distance, the playing is awesome. This is a very talented musician doing some very entertaining and unique work. Thanks for posting it for us to enjoy and marvel over!
For those of you being critical of this brilliant musician, Kevin Kmetz is the first foreigner in history to win the honorary Daijo Kazuo Award at the Tsugaru Shamisen Championship Competition in Kanagi, Japan on May 5, 2005 and the "Judges Choice" Award at the Hirosaki Championship tournament May 4, 2005. In both 2006 and 2007, Kevin placed Nyusho (runner-up) at Hirosaki and Jyun Yuusho (2nd place) at Kanagi. Enough said.
The truth is that it is not a Mugen 21. It comes from a Shamisen maker named Beniya. From far away it looks just like one of Katoh`s but if that was a Mugen it would be feeding back like crazy. Katoh is working on something new, however but I can`t really talk about it just yet...
I don't think so. I'm pretty sure a Mugen21 can be played acoustically as well as amplified but the electric shamisen in the video can't be played without an amp. I've seen it up close and I saw it has a hard pvc skin/cover in lue of dog skin.
A Mugen21 probably sounds more like a shamisen. I think this fully electric kind just sounds like a electric guitar. (which I'm not a huge fan of, but that's just me)
I'm fairly sure that it is a mugen. Same dokake. and the acrylic pegs are from katoh too. Any shamisen can be fitted with a synthetic or dog skin. Probably was going through some effects or a weird amp. Besides, the mugen series are the only electric shamisens.

So now the question: Who has the more facemelting skills? Top guitar players or top shamisen players?
differentdude01 3 years ago
Depends on who you ask.
I, personally, would have to say a player of the triple necked Guitar shamisen sanshin Theremin.
That would bring the term "one man band" to a whole new level.

Looks like a Roland Cube amp. The smaller one. It would have quite a few effects built in to it.
