I found this well put together video while trying to figure out what these things were. Thing is, I can only seem to find record of these jumping galls in Cali, but I found thousands of them in a pile in the woods in IL. Near Chicago! Strange.
I lived in Sutter from 1966-1978! Went to Brittan Elementary until my parents divorce, my Dad was a custodian at the school, Clyde Elkins. Miss the oaks as well as the black walnut trees. Interesting vid!
My mother just got back tonight from a vacation to Arizona, and she bought me some jumping beans. They weren't moving at first, so I put a bright lamp over the plastic case they are in, and now they won't stop lol.
It was interesting to read about what makes these, and the galls move the way they do. So, I guess once they stop "jumping", I'll put them outside somewhere to hatch.
Shame they won't be able to reproduce, but at least they will be free while they are alive.
This is a great teaching tool--Thanks for it! For all you paranoiacs out there--this is a very small NON-STINGING wasp.
