What is the main difference between passive and active pickups on bass guitars, tonally?

I am a re cording artist and am using passive p/u's but I am thinking of getting a bass w/ actives...

am I missing out?

Did you solve that low string buzz problem? Because the same thing happens on my washburn when i tune down that low. I'm pretty sure that happens to all basses, cause the string becomes looser and it really big... Though can getting bigger strings or raising the bridge really solve that? xP

DJ don't worry about what these people say about the stingray cause they don't know horse shit. The music man is perfect for pop punky hardcore because of it's tonality and what that tone brings to this type of genre the fender p bass was more mellow a didnt produce that same punch needed I have a fender mark hoppus p bass but the seymour Duncan pick ups in it gave nearly the same tonality as the stingray. Good luck and don't worry u made the right choice.

I have an Audio Art tube amp too mine is the Studio V3 with input /ouput controls as well as in phase/out of phase settings, pretty nice i only paid $120 for mine I disagree with the sound when you "normalize" then you are making them sound similar in the software. so you aren't going to notice much difference if any in the play back.. I think you need some sound deadening foam in that room though there's an odd echo in there that you need to defeat. the song sounds great though

@mexicanmanjohn @VleraBrite to be fair using or not using a pick doesn't really ruin the sound of the bass, look at shavo odidjian (System Of A Down), Chris Wolstenholme (Muse), Flea (RHCP), John Paul Jones (Led Zepplin and Them Crooked Vultures) + many more nearly never use a pick and they play some of the best bass lines rock music has ever heard, it just depends on how you use the technique of playing the bass instead of thinking that using no pick means jazz and using a pick means punk :)

@mexicanmanjohn If we did it would be a completely different genre. There are some breaks in our songs where I don't use a pick. I just prefer the sound of the pick for our style of music and it gives me a lot more control over the rhythm. We aren't a jazz band..

I think you want a heavier E string. Also a quick check of the truss rod adjustment might help as dow tuning does change the neck tension

I honestly can't hear a difference but when recording the quality of the orginal signal is important and there isn't always an obvious difference. But the end result after effects and mixdown will sound more professional

DJ, you could make the music man have better intonation and no fret buzz by getting new strings and tuning into drop C sharp when stringing so then the strings aren't stretched out then lowered which makes them looser.

I'd say skip the reddi for vocals. If you run too much tube into a signal, it's gonna thin it out and give it an almost gritty sound, which could be cool for some things, but not for vocals.

Also... Have you checked out the ART Pro Channel? Since you're using the ART pre-amp, you might dig it. It has a tube pre, compressor, and eq. I've got one recently and it has made the a huge difference in my recordings. Not only vocals and mic'd instruments, but the di in for guitars too.

Uh. DJ, I've noticed that ALOT of your songs have pretty crazy drums in them, like really busy drums. I feel like I'd be willing to listen if the drums were more simple. Dont get me wrong double bass is cool and stuff but, in most cases, simple is better. I guess its also apart of the 'you dont have a drum kit to play' thing but still it would be cooler to hear more simple and technical stuff... like Copeland! Anyways I love the videos! Stingray is a hot bass man, literally and figuratively. That massive pickup's got a lot of gain. Try fooling around with the tone knobs. You can get any sound from funky slap-n-pop to deep, chest-thumping low end. Could probably benefit from a full setup too. You can get that done at a local music shop or DIY, which seems to be the way you might roll. Make sure to adjust the truss rod and test the intonation with the open string tones and 12th fret harmonics. Damn I'm running out of room. Haha
