  • what a beautiful song!

  • Great tribute to all immigrants who left all behind to start a new life !!

Love it, My Grandparents started all from scratch as well and sacrificed sooo much to bring us into a safe world !!

  • Happy Mother's Day, Mom. I'm glad you came to America and "sailed thru the harbor of hopes & dreams..." I <3 you

  • Music and lyrics for "Goodnight, New York" by the incomparable Julie Gold.

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :.......( made me cry

  • My father came alone from Italy in 1921 at the age of 17 through Ellis Island. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. He often told us that his American children were born in paradise. Love you forever, Papa'.

  • I am British, with no family connections to North America, but i find this song so moving

  • Perfection. Thank you for posting. It takes my breath away every time I see or hear this song. Nobody does it (or anything) like Nanci and Emmylou.

  • To the user who can't make it past the first chorus without tears. How about the first line?

  • That took me two years, hslev, and I still don't always get that far.

  • Saw Nanci in summer of 2005 with Arlo Guthrie in Newport, Rhode Island....perfect summer night. First time i knew of her was when i saw a video for her song " I don't want to talk about love" in 1989. Once I heard her I went searching for her music and I love it all......she is great period.

  • I met her at a concert at Washington University in St. Louis years ago. I own every CD she has made. She is as sweet and unassuming as her music. Maybe she has never had national recognition because she is simply too special.

  • How does someone so talented get overlooked in her own country. LOVELOVELOVE NANCI

  • It is criminal that this woman`s amazing talent has largely fallen through the cracks of radio programmers for so many years. I have really only discovered the depth of her talent since i found her on youtube a year ago. I really think she needs an infomercial to reach the masses.

  • America remains the strongest!

  • It's in gentleness that we prove our strength - good luck New York

  • Something that the Bid Ladens of this world never understand is that America is the possibility of hope for many peoples of all backgrounds and faiths.

This song so poignantly states that there are many of us who grew up with little and yet were never really in want of anything.

Those that perished on 9/11 were not souless capitalists but fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters who went to work that day like on any other and will always be remembered, honored and loved.

  • Another Julie Gold classic sung by Nanci with Emmylou making it all the more incredible. Nothing could be more special than these two singing this song unless Julie Gold was on stage herself with another piano accompanying and singing with them. Her mother came from Russia. The video montage is beyond words especially for those of us who lived through these decades. Nanci explained in a London concert on 01.11.2001 that she called Julie who lived in lower Manhattan on 9/11 from Canada . . .

  • wow now i have an face and a name to the song which i have since more thane 5 Months. For what background is it makes ? 9/11? I have lost one Friend in this terrible Day .

  • This is a magnificent song and an equisite performance. Can't keep dry eyes through this masterpiece. Thx for posting it.

  • I have yet to get through listening to this song without crying; it's so pretty and Nanci is just awesome.

  • Yeah, krummcutie, I've been coming to this vid for nearly two years and I still can't get past the first chorus without tears.

  • God.... how beautiful...

  • From the heart of the People Of the State of Massachusetts to People of the State of New York......America still strong.

  • This is an absolutely beautiful song, which brings tears to my eyes. I first heard it after 9-11 and it felt like a fitting and deeply meaningful tribute to the people of New York City.

  • Awesome post!! I had a two hour special saved on DVR for months that I didn't want to delete because of this video. Classic, classic, performance that I feel will one day be highly regarded. Thanks for sharing!!

  • touching....

  • I am not American but I can imagine how important New York is for American. Beautiful song! Universally beautiful! regardless of our nationalities.

  • this is so beautiful, tnx 4 sharing diz ;-)*

    *M*

  • Very beautiful!!:)

  • two of my favorite performers.beautiful song!

  • This one always brings a tear to my eye...Thanks Nanci

  • What a brilliant performance, what a gorgeous video ! Thank you for sharing this, ericablue32 !! I actually saw Nanci preform at the Beacon Theater here in NYC right before this CD came out and she had Julie Gold come out and do it, alone, at the piano. AMAZING !!! To hear this song coming from the voice and heart of the songwriter !!!

  • @Dombrowski1959 I was there that night, also. She was originally scheduled to perform on September 14th, but after September 11th, she rescheduled to December 14th. It was an incredible concert.

  • Its a Honor to the People of the State of New York.

  • After 9/11 this is much sadder, ya know. Emmylou is truly fabulous! Makes you think about why this city is so worth defending, let alone this country. We really are the lucky ones.

  • What a truly wonderful piece of music, incredibly moving lyrics and music, This is one of a hell of a performance by Nanci Griffith. Who wrote the song, anyone know?

  • I've just found out - it was Julie Gold in case anyone's interested!

  • cool American ladies singing from the heart. Ace video of the Big Apple. :)

  • Two of the greatest female vocalists. You can't put them in any one category. Thanks

  • This is so beautiful ... so charming and so sad and so ... thank you.

  • Thought you might like to hear Emmylou sing another lullaby, the video I posted is called Hogo's Lullaby.

    This video is deeply appreciated.

Thank you and thanks russtacean for sending this video to to me.

    Teejaysang

  • this is a pretty nice one. thanks, russ

  • I thought to ask for this !

THIS is (to me) for my GRANDMOTHER

europe, just after WWII to join her brother

in California. She decide to stay there,

    and became a New-York ladie,

from the Bronx... to the 5th Avenue...

    THANK YOU for sharing this.

  • Nice video, they sing well together, how old is this? Thanks for posting, Ally.

  • Ally, this was recorded in the spring of 2002

Emmylou, came to do this beautiful duet for that

Nanci Griffith concert with the "Blue Moon Orchestra"
