My father came alone from Italy in 1921 at the age of 17 through Ellis Island. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. He often told us that his American children were born in paradise. Love you forever, Papa'.
Saw Nanci in summer of 2005 with Arlo Guthrie in Newport, Rhode Island....perfect summer night. First time i knew of her was when i saw a video for her song " I don't want to talk about love" in 1989. Once I heard her I went searching for her music and I love it all......she is great period.
I met her at a concert at Washington University in St. Louis years ago. I own every CD she has made. She is as sweet and unassuming as her music. Maybe she has never had national recognition because she is simply too special.
It is criminal that this woman`s amazing talent has largely fallen through the cracks of radio programmers for so many years. I have really only discovered the depth of her talent since i found her on youtube a year ago. I really think she needs an infomercial to reach the masses.
Something that the Bid Ladens of this world never understand is that America is the possibility of hope for many peoples of all backgrounds and faiths.
This song so poignantly states that there are many of us who grew up with little and yet were never really in want of anything.
Those that perished on 9/11 were not souless capitalists but fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters who went to work that day like on any other and will always be remembered, honored and loved.
Another Julie Gold classic sung by Nanci with Emmylou making it all the more incredible. Nothing could be more special than these two singing this song unless Julie Gold was on stage herself with another piano accompanying and singing with them. Her mother came from Russia. The video montage is beyond words especially for those of us who lived through these decades. Nanci explained in a London concert on 01.11.2001 that she called Julie who lived in lower Manhattan on 9/11 from Canada . . .
wow now i have an face and a name to the song which i have since more thane 5 Months. For what background is it makes ? 9/11? I have lost one Friend in this terrible Day .
This is an absolutely beautiful song, which brings tears to my eyes. I first heard it after 9-11 and it felt like a fitting and deeply meaningful tribute to the people of New York City.
Awesome post!! I had a two hour special saved on DVR for months that I didn't want to delete because of this video. Classic, classic, performance that I feel will one day be highly regarded. Thanks for sharing!!
What a brilliant performance, what a gorgeous video ! Thank you for sharing this, ericablue32 !! I actually saw Nanci preform at the Beacon Theater here in NYC right before this CD came out and she had Julie Gold come out and do it, alone, at the piano. AMAZING !!! To hear this song coming from the voice and heart of the songwriter !!!
@Dombrowski1959 I was there that night, also. She was originally scheduled to perform on September 14th, but after September 11th, she rescheduled to December 14th. It was an incredible concert.
After 9/11 this is much sadder, ya know. Emmylou is truly fabulous! Makes you think about why this city is so worth defending, let alone this country. We really are the lucky ones.
What a truly wonderful piece of music, incredibly moving lyrics and music, This is one of a hell of a performance by Nanci Griffith. Who wrote the song, anyone know?
what a beautiful song!
