About the time of this recording, the BBC made a documentary on the Air and Ground Controllers at Heathrow, London. Imagine if you will, aircraft shot using extreme telephoto moving silently around the taxiways to what was then 300 year old sound. It's in 6/8. I know that much because I have the sheet music and it sounds like that when I play it. As for the tempo itself I have no idea. :3 He does add his own embelishes to it though because some of the stuff he does isn't in the music I have.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!! Listen to this awesome piece AND then listen to "Rodrigo - Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre - Fantasia Canariose" is it a homage or someone ripping off the exact same melody OR is canary always this melody??
@UnwrittenPaul Rip off? C'mon, we're talking about Joaquin Rodrigo here, not Vanilla Ice.. ;)
Thus saith wikipedia: "The four movements were based on six short dances for solo guitar by the 17th century Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz, taken from a three-volume work now commonly known as Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española. Most of the movements retain the names that Sanz originally gave them. Rodrigo expanded on Sanz's themes to produce a work lasting more than 20 minutes."
@DrMikero Sir you are a legend. I knew it wasn't a rip-off classical is always like that. Borrow this, variate that. Share the love. And it's such a beautiful beautiful melody
@UnwrittenPaul Uh...yeah, what DrMikero wrote. I suspect what Rodrigo was doing was trying to bring a more modern, universal feel to these compositions and yet still retain their old, courtly Spanish character. I think he succeeded as well, though I am so besotted with the intimacy of the guitar and the simple honesty and vitality of early music that I would rather listen to Sanz' solo guitar bits, especially as played by Williams as he is so damned good. He understands this stuff so well.
@UnwrittenPaul ...you are correct! I have that score and sound track(Gtr & Orchestra)...I wonder what a judge would say if I told him i simply "expanded" on someone's original music and offered no compensation? ;)...(good observation!)
@newislandguitar IF YOU HAVE NOT STUDIED MUSIC PROPERLY THEN DON'T COMMENT!!! Use your brains... Listen to MORE classical music... You'll be surprised and regret the comment you've made... That other guy is just simply naive and I don't want to comment on that one...
@CNFrostXY How are you today? :) just checked out your channel...that's a nice intro to the Spanish ballad you're playing...I recorded that piece for guitar and piano and hope to upload it here on my channel someday. Do you plan to upload any more tunes on your channel?I will sub you.You should upload more. Nice tone too. Have a great week.
@newislandguitar In fact yes I am planning to upload all of Bach's Second and Third Inventions but I am way too busy right now with other projects in hand, have to at least wait till after June.
the thing that amazes me is how anchored his hands are, apart from going up and down the fret board, his hands don't move, i.e. when he reaches from a treble to a bass string, his hand stays still and his fingers do all the moving, i just can't make my hands work that way!!
@DrMikero i think it's fulfilling to be nice once in a while and give someone a straight answer rather than act like a cock that knows everything. *let me tell you 4 ways i'm smarter than you you stupid fuck that doesn't know anything about how to identify bpm*
@davidlohcc : Williams tempo deviates very slightly throughout, but the work is indeed in 6/8 meter. 6/8 meter is measured in two beats of three triplets, so you'd tap your foot twice in one measure. With that being said, he is playing at about 112 triplet beats per minute.
@durro9xl Can't YOU write proper english asshole.... First, I haven't said anything about his playing. I know he played very good. Second, my point in my reply was saying he played only part of the piece. Third, I wished he could play the full piece. I played this piece too so I wanted to hear him playing.
Finally, Read my reply carefully before you reply
@ultratrekky standard tuning except for dropped D on the sixth string. you can find music in book 7 of the RCM guitar repertoires and studies third edition(not sure if its in previous editions) they sell this book and all others probably at you local music store
if somebody could please tell me where to get the sheet music for john williams version of this piece, i would be extremely grateful. i want to play it for a festival coming up and am having no luck finding john williams sheet music (not tab!!!)
in what period did gaspar sanz live? i kinda heard somewhere that this was baroque but he adapted the style of the renaissance or something. can anyone tell me what period this came from?
Go very slow with a metronome and practice without the grace notes until you are comfortable with it. Then turn the metronome up a few clicks. Repeat. Occassionally it's good to crank the metronome way up and play it as fast as you possibly can (and probably make tons of mistakes) and then pull the metronome back down to speed. It's amazing how much easier it seems to play it at 100 when you try to play it at 120, for example. That's all there is to it.
Thanks for the advice, but I posted this message a prettty long time ago. I have, with great pride, already learned this piece, and I think I play it pretty well. There is some slight isusue when it comes to using dunamics, but I am pretty sure can fix that mistake, thanks anyway.
He's playing either a Herman Hauser or a Fleta. You can tell by the headstock. The headstock on both are similar but the video is too fuzzy for me to make out the subtle differences between the two. If it was clearer I could tell. It's definitely one of those two though.

What's your point, asshole? The reason Sanz played with gut strings is because they didn't have something called nylon and wire-round strings 500 hundred friggin' years ago. Things have improved since then, schmuck. Get with the times. John Williams is the best of the best, so think before you post more stupid comments like you did.
@SonofBrunhilde That's an incredible put down!! Well Done! only problem is, I don't think anyone with this much obvious passion for his art would appreciate the abuse it generates from some people, even when it is in his defense
Yes you are correct. The Fantasia para un Gentilhombre is a variation of this song. Before the 1674 version it was also a dance in the renaissance. Spanish composers often recycled earlier songs and they kept evolving over time. Several of Rodrigo's songs use older songs ranging as far back as medieval Spanish folk dances. For example, the movement from the fantasia that comes right before this is also taken from an old song.
danza de las hachas? lol no wonder it wasnt so difficult to play i felt like i had played something similar, but then again most of the pieces in that style are somewhat similar
I don't see how you have the time to go around plugging and whoreing for whoever mathew hayes is. It's amazing the lack of constructiveness in most people...like in me, for wasting my time in responding to you. See, now your just draggin ME down too...
I have this piece but without the the trills. It is a very nice piece. Actually I'm always wondering and comparing, because of other pieces at the time being so Medieval like and this one being so familiar, almost as if it was written not so long ago.
It is a Baroque piece, ornamentation, such as trills, were not originally written in the scores as the performer had MUCH more liberty to improvise and have their own liberties when performing the piece.
So, when playing longer notes in Baroque music, expect there was some ornamentation around the note,
Agree, but remember...34 years ago...1975 audio/video recording technology is not what it is today!!! Williams has got to be one of the best in the world!!!
Not slow. Appropriate dance tempo - while I agree it can be fun to play this as fast as you can...the "dance" bit of it goes out the window. I appreciate his casual tempo, and yea, he's reading on this. Probably didn't spend all evening fretting about what all we would be saying on Youtube! Anyhow, so glad this was posted. Thanks!
hello, can anyone tell me the name of the guitar John Williams uses on the recording of Concierto de Aranjuez, I mean the guitar with the structure inside which looks similar to the cells inside a bee nest. Thanks!!!
You are referring to the Smallman guitars he's been using for years now. IMO those guitars really suit him better than the Spanish sounding Fleta he's using in this video.
That was awesome. The tab doesn't look that hard on this, but to play that fast and fluidly is probably pretty difficult. Beautiful piece though, and superbly executed!
looks like he's playing a Fleta guitar

davidlohcc 1 year ago
@davidlohcc I think you'll find that life is much more fulfilling when you don't need to rely on others for answers to very simple questions. Try:
1: Count by hand the number of beats in the first 60 seconds of the song
2: Better yet, count the number of measures in a minute & multiply by 3
3: Find a metronome & adjust until it clicks in time with the music
4: Save as a sound file. Identify peaks representing notes one beat apart. Measure their distance in seconds. Divide 60 by that number.

matthew hayes is far superior

I don't see how you have the time to go around plugging and whoreing for whoever mathew hayes is. It's amazing the lack of constructiveness in most people...like in me, for wasting my time in responding to you. See, now your just draggin ME down too...

Very Nice

I have this piece but without the the trills. It is a very nice piece. Actually I'm always wondering and comparing, because of other pieces at the time being so Medieval like and this one being so familiar, almost as if it was written not so long ago.
He plays it very well.
DjosueD 2 years ago
It is a Baroque piece, ornamentation, such as trills, were not originally written in the scores as the performer had MUCH more liberty to improvise and have their own liberties when performing the piece.
So, when playing longer notes in Baroque music, expect there was some ornamentation around the note,
if you think there should be a trill, go for it.
Hope this helps

Agree, but remember...34 years ago...1975 audio/video recording technology is not what it is today!!! Williams has got to be one of the best in the world!!!

I love classical and METAL and know that any metal guitarist would absolutely bow to William's. No need to elaborate.

Is this piece written by Gaspar Sanz in 1674, Music of Spain Dance?
SametKaptan19 2 years ago
He is reading and playing. Very hard. Slow but nice playing. He's master of classical guitar.
SametKaptan19 2 years ago 2
Thanks!

His tone is amazing!! Where the hell is that coming from. Is he playing his Ausie made guitars here??
bobthwart 3 years ago
hello, can anyone tell me the name of the guitar John Williams uses on the recording of Concierto de Aranjuez, I mean the guitar with the structure inside which looks similar to the cells inside a bee nest. Thanks!!!
konzerteloco 3 years ago
You are referring to the Smallman guitars he's been using for years now. IMO those guitars really suit him better than the Spanish sounding Fleta he's using in this video.
zatarregaza 3 years ago
Yes, that one! Thank you very much!
konzerteloco 3 years ago
He is not playing the smallman in this video.

well you're entitled to your opinion although I have to disagree.
This is a great version and 'tune' ... I love the stricking chords near the end and the last chord has a great tone and richness!
pugcasso 3 years ago
haha! I love old-school Williams, his hair and everything is hilarious. As usual impeccable performance
albatross111 3 years ago
That was awesome. The tab doesn't look that hard on this, but to play that fast and fluidly is probably pretty difficult. Beautiful piece though, and superbly executed!
