  • hi,,the clunk you hear is that rod as you said,,what do you do with that rod once you install the new valvae body?.,does it stay like that ? or it connects to something..thanks.

  • my sl1 slips when put into drive then slams into gear... when on the freeway it drives fine but it slips during stop n go traffic.. wtf is goin on??

  • i have a 98 saturn sl1. i watched the tspoof video on how to ghange the pressure solenoid and i did so but the car went from just having reverse slams to slipping now. i put the old solenoid back in and its doin the same thing so i ordered a rebuilt VB. pray it works.

  • @firemanCV y ur master cylinder looks so far away from the pan? mine is madd close even with it loose.

  • @omarG19100

What year do you have ?

  • @omarG19100 U have ABS

  • @firemanCV never mind the question bout the wire pulled in the back. i take it u said the saftey nuetral switch.

  • @omarG19100

    Yes, thats correct

  • @firemanCV The wire u pulled up at 1:17. what is that. i tried pulling it up but mine seems hard to come off. i dont want to break it.

  • @omarG19100

It's on there tight. It won't break, pull straight off..

  • Can anyone point me in the right direction...I've followed this video successfully thus far. My problem is that the harness shows @2:20 is melted away in the corner and will need to be replaced. Where can I get my hands on one of those?

  • @anthonym612

The best place is a salvage yard or junk yard.

Make sure you cut the wires extra long...

Make sure the bus plate isn't melted either.

thats the black plastic piece that is on top of the solenoids.

Check my other videos to see what I'm talking about..

If you need further help, let me know :)

  • Great video! I think I'm gonna have to do this soon. Getting the reverse SLAM when the trans is cold. Its deleyed, before you hear the solenoids kick in, then SLAM. Mine is a 94 though, But I'm sure its the same. Thanks again!

  • @RobRokken

Make sure you check out saturnfansdotcom for reverse slam cure.

  • Great video's, lot of info. At the end of video 2 you rotated gears till you heard a click and pushed in some kind of plunger. Could you explain what you were doing? Thanks

  • @jacklinane

I just rotated the gears, don't worry about the click my friend, that was just free play in the gears..

Watch the Update to Saturn TAAT Transmission Valve body Removal-HD video as well :)

  • I have no idea how my dad did that but I really appreciate the help thank you so much

  • @jrmrabbitnose

    Your Welcome :)

    Hope it helped you

  • @FiremanCV 1:05 in the video u removed a wire in the back of the tranny. wht is that wire and what it do? i tried to take it off but for some reason it was hard and i was scarred to break it.

  • @omarG19100

The single wire I removed will NOT break off..

Pull it straight off. It pulls hard, but it will NOT break.

  • Respond to this video... Neutral safety switch

  • @FiremaCv nah i tried once and gave up. It was already rusted in stuff, so the farest i got to was to the electric connector. i took it off and sprayed it with electric cleaner. is there any other lines around that area i can disconnect and clean?

  • @omarG19100

The connector on top of the transmission, thats about it..

I know this sounds strange, but how old is your battery?

I have heard of shifting problems due to grounding issues or battery.

Have you tried the saturn forums ??

    saturnfansdotcom/forums/

  • @firemanCV thanks man.

  • @FiremanCV oh and another thing i went to ebay to look for the valve body but they only had one tht said it fits the 97 saturn. i dont know if its from 97-99 or what?

  • @omarG19100

97-99 is same, doesn't matter if its an MP6 or MP7 Transmission.

    It's the same bud..

  • @omarG19100

    I stand corrected..

    1.9 1992-2002 are the same

  • @FiremanCV i think i changed the fluids last last in like november or so. i tried taking off the battery housing the other day and the nuts are like stuck, or possibly striped. imma try some penatrating oil on it.

  • @omarG19100

    Should be 13mm bolt.

    Hope you didn't strip them.

    There are 3 of them.

2 on batter tray, one in wheel well on drivers side.

  • hello your video was very helpful but I had a question about my 93 saturn sl2. When reconnecting the rod that "clanks" the bolt that goes into the hole of the sliding shaft snapped in half and was hoping your could give me the name of the part so i can purchase a replacement.

    Thank you so much

  • @jrmrabbitnose

how the heck did you do that??

    makcotransmissionpartsdotcom/Saturn-TAAT

Click link at top, will open up a pdf file.

Look at far bottom right of page.

Internal shift linkage rod # 991

  • When installing the rebuilt valve body, where does the little arm that "clunked while removing the valve body" go? I haven't done this to my Saturn yet, but am likely going to very soon. Mine is a 1.9 litre sohc 1992 SL1. I'm thinking it is similar to your 97. Thanks.

  • @scmacv

On the back of the valve body will be a sliding piece of metal with plastic on the end of it..

The piece of plastic will have a hole in it.

This is where you will put the rod that drops off.

It will only go in one way, so don't force it..

Give me a few days, will be making a complete descriptive video showing this..

  • @scmacv

Just upload a new video that explains this..

    Check it out

    Enjoy :)

  • @firemanCV i have a 98 saturn sl1 and the reverse and drive slams hard when u shift into it. u think mab cleaning the sensor/electric connection will help too? $ kinda tight asof now. thanks.

  • @omarG19100

It couldn't hurt, when is the last time you changed the transmission fluid & filter ?

  • FiremanCV,

I Have a 2000 SL2 I just bought a week ago. Transmission shifts fine but now it lags when shifting into reverse and when warm you have to press gas pedal to 1500 rpm then it will ease into gear or sometimes a slight jerk. I read about some procedures that have you use an additive to cure problem but my question here is could I just replace the valve body and have a pemanent cure for my problem? Please advise. Thanks Josh

  • @edge540je

You could replace the valve body, but I would test the individual solenoids first.

Check out saturnfans & look for reverse problem.

When is the last time you did a fluid & filter change ? That might help.

Some additive hurt more than they help.

look on the forums for more info.

Let me know how you make out..

    Good luck

  • Nice video! My friend and I are nearly done overhauling a 1996 Saturn SL1 MP6/ TAAT transmission in school which is nearly the same except that the valve body looks like the second picture you showed. Once again nice video! :)

  • @lildoughboy21

Yea, there a couple of different styles, but both work the same :)

    Glad you enjoyed the video..

Only reason I made the video, is I couldn't find one,lol

  • Are there any videos showing the install? What symptoms tell you to replace the valve body? I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 that acts like it is stuck in third or fourth gear. I replaced a bad solenoid in the valve body last summer. That seemed to cure it for about a day. Took it on a 20 mile highway trip and it started doing it again. It will not shift down, it starts out from a stop in what feels like third gear.

  • @beak6363

Showing the install of the valve body you mean ? or complete transmission ?

A bad valve body can have several symptoms of needing to be replaced..

The first being the service engine light coming on..

If you get codes for any gears, the is the first symptom...

Codes can be pulled free from autozone-oreily auto parts-Pep Boys-Advanced auto parts..

Just bring the car to them, and they will scan them computer for free..

  • @FiremanCV

I installed the rebuilt valve body with all new solenoids. It was doing fine and then the engine light came back on. It still seemed to be shifting ok and I haven't got the codes checked yet to see why the engine light came back on. Once in a while it will start to shift, I believe from third to fourth gear, and it will slip. I let off the gas and it will shift up and drive normally again. It doesn't do it every time and only on the highway so far.

  • @beak6363

Ok, you cleared the codes i take it?

Sometimes it takes a while for the vehicle to relearn shifting patterns.

After you install a new valve body or solenoids you have to drive the vehicle lightly, no lead footing it,lol

In other words, you have to accelerate gradually as you go.

If you get a code, go to the auto parts store & get the code & let me know what it is.

Also I had to reset computer 3 times before it worked for me :(

    Let me know what happens..

    Good Luck

  • @FiremanCV

Well I cleared the codes again by unhooking the battery over night. I have drove the car some with no problems yet. The engine light has not came back on either. I haven't drove it on the highway yet though. The place I bought the used valve body from said you are supposed to get going to 45 mph and then push down on the gas until it down-shifts and then do the same thing at 30 mph. They said to do that 3-5 times. I haven't did that this time.

  • @beak6363

I almost forgot. DO you have a Performance switch at all near the shifter ?

You want this in the normal position.

Pull the ECM fuse & Batter for a couple minutes to clear codes.

Redrive while slowly accelerating if possible..

Let me know if that helps..

  • @FiremanCV

No there is not a perfomance switch in this car. I will pull the ecm fuse and battery to clear the codes and drive it again for awhile and let you know what happens. Thanks!

  • @FiremanCV

    No Performance switch.

I unhooked the battery and drove it again about 3 or 4 times. Still slips between third and fourth gear. Also won't shift back into first gear after driving on the highway for even just a couple miles.

It has codes P0731 and p0734.

It drives fine around town. Shifts smooth, no problems. Shifts into reverse fine too.

  • @FiremanCV

I installed the rebuilt valve body with all new solenoids. It was doing fine and then the engine light came back on. It still seemed to be shifting ok and I haven't got the codes checked yet to see why the engine light came back on. • FiremanCV,

I want to thank you very much for this video - it is very helpful. Im having problem with reverse. I can shift the car into reverse, but it doesn't engage and move the car backwards - It will only engage in the morning when I first start the car. I can go forward without a problem. Based on the blogs, it seems like there could be a problem with the valve box. Should I replace the whole box or try an identify the solenoid (i assume it could be a solenoid.) Thanks a lot!

  • @hajjar2011 Look on saturnfans website for reverse cure... I suggest you test all your solenoids.. Takes less than 5 minutes. Look at my other videos on how to do this.. You can be sure 1 of the solenoids can be faulty. I have never seen a the bands in the transmission let go. Before replacing the entire valve body or testing the solenoids visit the website for the reverse slam cure. Check fluid levels as well. When is last time you changed out the fluid & filter ? Let me know :)
  • @FiremanCV , I'm having the same problem with reverse. I can shift the car into reverse, and engage and move the car backwards but after a short delay/ and vibration a bit. I can go forward without a problem. I'll test the solenoids. THANK YOU for all your videos!!!! Can we have also the link for reverse slam cure?THANK YOU!!!

  • ,( I am not shure if it was your vid or not). I will get to that this weekend (the saturn is my second car I have a son who will graduate high school next june then the car will be his) Thanks again FiremanCV for your advice and help, will let you know mon.

  • @spindriff

    Funny you should mention this..

All the videos that I have made are from my sons saturn that i got running for him..

Best car you can get him in for safety..

My son survived a t bone accident in one..

The saturn is totaled completely, but hes alive...

Best car that I could have put him in..

  • thank you for your advice. the fluid was changed about 1 year ago with only around 2,000 miles driven since. I was pretty shure the level was OK but I checked it this eve. the dipstick red high when car was cold, after warming up the car it was just a tiny bit above the full level. I saw the prodcure for tightening the input and out put shafts on the saturn fourm, very helpfull stuff. I think I will check the solenoids first, I saw a video on checking them at the connecter

  • @spindriff

Yea, check out my other videos as well.

I made one on how to test the solenoids without removing the cover off the valve body..

Let me know how it goes..

  • thanks a million FiremanCV for your videos.

about a year ago I had my trans fluid changed on my 97 sc2, I still had warrenty at the time, they told me my valve body was bad so I had them change it (it was warrenty covered and I was at a dealership) the car shifted noticibly better.

9 months later dealer out of busniess my car shifts like crap and will not go into reverse at all when motor is warm.

if you had to guess do you think I need a new valve body (car as aprox 75,000 miles

  • @spindriff

At 75,000 you shouldn't be having problems that early :(

Check out the reverse slam fix on the saturn forums link above..

If you can't find the answer your looking for on the forums, let me know...

1st thing.. When was the last Transmission Fluid & Filter Change ?

2nd- Is the Transmission fluid level full ?

Not trying to insult you by asking the obvious, lol

If the above are ok, then check for reverse slam fix on forums...

If no luck, then try testing out your solenoids.

  • Let me know how you make out..

There are videos I made on how to check your solenoids.

If you drive it too long messed up, then a valve body replacement may be needed..

If fluid levels are ok, and solenoids are good, a transmission replacement may be needed..

I got lucky, got a wrecked saturn with 50,000 miles on it from a junkyard for $200.00, worked like a charm.. I have replaced about 10 valve bodies without replacing the whole transmission..

I'm a full time ASE Certified Mechanic

  • Thanks Firemancv2, I wasn't sure if that rod just laid there and the new valve body went over it but now that you said it goes into a slot in the valve body that makes sense. GREAT VIDEO.. it looks like a easy enough job... Thanks for helping all of us Saturn people out!!!!!! I see the valve body bolts torque to 97 inch lbs. IS the transmission pan bolts about 10-12 ft lbs??

  • @tuknn20s

    Yes 10-12..

    I went with 10 myself.

MAKE sure your surfaces are clean before re installing :)

  • @tuknn20s

    No Problem :)

If ya need anything else, Don't hesitate to ask :)

  • Hey Fireman, that rod that drops once you remove the valve body, do you have to move it to the right side like you did and then install the valve body back into place?

does that deal with the shifting?

  • @tuknn20s

The rod you saw me move can be left alone..

I just moved it to get it out out the way & to show where it was..

When the valve body is removed, it has to be slid towards the passenger side of the vehicle about an inch or two & towards the front of the vehicle.

This will allow the rod to drop.

When installing the valve body, just lift up the rod and insert it in the hole on the new valve body & seat the valve body to the transmission..

I will make a new install video soon.

  • @tuknn20s

If you don't install this rod, the car will never move :(

Yes that is how your transmission shifts :)

  • I forgot to mention 1 thing in the video...

    Freeze the video at 2:18

Look at the 2 terminals that are dark on the lower right...

This connector is shot due to the bad solenoids...

If you replace the valve body, PLEASE replace the connector as well.

Or you will possibly still have transmission problems due to a faulty connector.

If you replace with another valve body & don't replace the connector, there is a good chance you could either mess up the valve body or transmission.

  • GOD BLESS YOU, this vid is clear, perfect, helps MAJORLY

  • @427Jeep

    Glad it helped :)

  • Thanks for the video well done especially for a first try. To those wondering about simply replacing the solenoid, I feel it's just not worth the risk. Buying a remained unit off of eBay (or any where) comes with warranty and is bench tested good. IMO

  • @uluz2a6

    I completely agree.

You can test the individual solenoids & replace if your on a tight budget.

The best thing would to buy a remanned valve body

  • Thank you very much for this post! I just did the swap and everything went exactly as you said . . . the 'Satty' is fixed . . . runs great! I have a 2000 SC2

I hope you injury heals quickly and there is minimal pain!

    Cheers =D

  • @anddarrell

Happy to hear that your saturn runs great...

The kind comments motivates me to make more videos...

The good thing about working at a salvage/repair shop, I can make videos for about anything, lol

I will be posting engine & transmission removal without an engine hoist down the road, as well as fuel pump replacement, head replacement & more..

    Again..

    Thanks for the kind comments

  • I will be adding install video, but may be a while...

Have an injury that will take a couple weeks to heal :(

Don't want to get grease, oil, or transmission fluid in my laceration :(

  • Are you going to post the installation video(s)?

Also what is your opinion on just replacing the faulty solenoid(s) with the vale body installed?

  • @jazikids

Yes, I am going to post installation videos of valve body in about a week, had injury, or I would post sooner..

If you test your solenoids like in the video, it's easier than removing the whole valve body..

I was told 90% of the time, the solenoids are the problem..

Lookup on utube, the user "tspoof"

He also shows replacing solenoids without removing the valve body..

  • The vehicle itself won't move into reverse. Before installing the new vb, it could go into reverse with a loud clunk. When I shift into reverse, the car slowly rolls forward and thats with the original vb installed. My car has an auto tranny btw. Also I didn't test the new vb before installing.

  • @ares04

Ok. remove the connector on top of transmission & test with multimeter like in video..

See is they are all within one ohm of each other..

  • I installed a new valve body in my saturn but now I can no longer shift into reverse.

Do you know what the cause of the problem might be?

  • @ares04

You mean the shifter inside the car doesn't go into reverse?

    Or the vehicle itself?

Did the vehicle go into reverse before you installed new valve body?

Did you test new valve body before installing?

  • Nice video. If I recall correctly, the bolt on top of the electrical connector to the valve body is 9mm in size.

  • @qx773

    Thanks, My 1st video,lol

    I just learned that it's 7mm

  • @FiremanCV Oh, yeah. I knew it was right next to 8. My recollection was faulty.

  • @qx773

    Yea, Over 4 grand in tools & I can't find a damn 7mm socket,lol

Good thing I demonstrated the incorrect way to remove the plug.

    Still accomplished the task :)

A good mechanic only needs vice grips & a hammer, lol

And if you don't draw blood, your doing something wrong :)
