The complete DVD is excellent. The "Old Man" gives away lots of his techniques. It is skewed towards a North American audience with its focus on Testors but that is what the Mr Yost uses and Testors is available to most of the world via ebay. I highly recommend the DVD.
Yes ! The dvd will teach you a complete A To Z method on how to use Testors enamels with an airbrush . As for cutting doors , I don't do it , it's a royal pain in the behind , I've never really been satisfied with how they look upon completion .
Great video, u do great looking work. I was wondering, do you use a primer on ur car bodies before u put on a base coat. Because every time I try to use a primer my paint jobs don't turn out so good. I normally don't use a primer and my cars turn out great. Any info would b helpful.
Yo man,, my cousins last name is Yost... what a small world it is.. Love your rides. flawless mirror shine paintjobs,, just toatlly awsome.. where do u get those pieces of sandpaper ? 6000, 4000, 8000 grits.. i can't find any around my home.
Micromark carries it , they have 2400 thru 12000 . It is available in 6 x 9 sheets which can be cut into 4 squares which is about the best deal going . Thanks for the compliment , it is greatly appreciated !
HI; YOU SAID YOU USE 4,000 / 6,000 and 12,000 sand papper,,, Did you mean 400, 600 and 1,200? I never seen wet sandpapper more then 2,000. Where did you get them?
Take the first word of my reply and add . com to it . They sell it either in kit form or by the 6 by 9 sheets , which by the way , are the best deal as they can be cut into 4 squares.
I've just stumbled across your youtube channel and I must say I'm impressed! Its given my back some inspiration to get back into modeling! Its only been about 7 years since I last touched one.
Just a quick few questions though, that paint job at 9:10, do get that deep shine, is it the clear that achieves that or another technique?
Secondly, when one uses metal foil for trim, should this be sprayed with a clear coat do you think?
Actually , it's both ! The color , being enamel , already has a gloss to it . When coated with the clear enamel , the depth and richness of the color is further enhanced by the gloss of the clear. I do not advise using clear over the bare metal foil , there is really no need for it and the clear could yellow or attack the foiled surface . The hobby has progressed by leaps and bounds since you left it , it's a great time to get back into it !
Colors By Boyd Lime Pearl made by Testors . Word on the street .... They discontinued the line and will no longer be producing it . The sheer stupidity of this company's executives never ceases to amaze me !
@oldmansmodels thanks for responding back to me. I'm working on a 1979 El Camino Car, and a 1978 el camino Model. I'm trying to build a mii me for my car and that color was what I was looking for. The actual car will be house of kolor planet green w/ house of kolor yellow candy on it w/ house of kolor yellow flakes. the flakes have been also discontinued so I have been told, but I already have them =-)
Dude, are you serious!? You've basically turned your paint job skills from real cars to scaled models. It's insanely awesome! Even my car from the factory wouldn't have this quality of paint.
All great advice, I been building models for 15 years and have won a few local shows and I'd be embarrassed to put mine even close to yours. You've truly mastered the art of modeling.
That is why I put the dvds on the market ! If I can do it , you can do it ! It is very simple as long as you follow the steps laid out in the dvds . 49 years of experience will not steer you wrong ! I thank you for the compliment , it is greatly appreciated !
Step by step , comprehensive method from start to finish that will have you painting like a pro in no time at all . Covers proper paint environment , proper tools and product , proper kit prep , proper airbrush technique , and polishing. Dvd is 90 minutes long . With a little practice , you will be producing consistent show finishes on a regular basis !
At 6:11 does he say the car was already clear coated? Something I don't understand is if the car was clear coated then how did he remove the scratch from the paint? Did he have to rub down passed the clear coat to get to the base coat and then apply new clear coat when finished? Unless the imperfection was on the clear coat and not the paint?
i have bout 2 model cars ( a revell 57' flipnose vette and a revell acura rsx 3 in 1) and nethier of them fit properly resulting in a bad looking model and i do all the steps the exact way they say and i need some help.
@MrMopar1968 Thank you ! , I have a lot of fun with it . It is easy to do , believe it or not . That is the reason we put out the dvd . This way , everybody can learn how to do it without suffering through the trial and error stage .
Years ago, I did flames on a Willy's. Using the bottom of a glass ashtray, I applied my tape and carefully cut the flame shapes out. I then carefully peeled the tape off & applied to the car. After spaying yellow, orange and red, I pinstiped the edge blue. That was the hardest part. After letting it dry for a week, I sprayed 14 coats of clear, rubbing out between every 3rd or 4th coat.
Find out what needle / head combination gives the widest spray pattern for your model of airbrush . The manufacturer shoild be able to help you with this question
1) When painting the bonnet (or hood) at 4:52, the car body is in the line of fire.
2) The paint standers make for a rather top heavy combination once the parts to be painted are on. A small piece of triplex or plastic on the bottom gives it a stable foot so the parts won't fall over.
Being that it is enamel , the paint is wet and will absorb any light over spray without causing a problem.I generally stand away from the other parts when shooting , it was'nt possible to do so while shooting the dvd due to camera angles . As for the stands , I stay away from any type of plastic as it will attract dust and dirt . The pipe nipples are made of black iron and are heavy enough to with stand the weight of the body and do not fall over ,
Open rafters in a paint room, Why not just buy a 200,000 dollar devilbiss paint booth for model cars. Ive been painting model cars for years down my basement piece of dust here or there thats why they make 2000 and higher sand paper and you polish to perfection.
That shows you've never seen kids and pets together. Once that combination gets going it's sometimes really difficult to distinct which is which. And yes it DOES get dusty but most of all HAIRY (in more than one way too).
You forgot to use the word , interesting too ! At times you don't know who is biting , chasing , annoying , teasing , who ! The list goes on and on ! Believe it or not , I miss those days !
Gah it makes me sigh. I airbrush gundam stuff and the last one I did was about 600 bits :S. Wish I was into the cars seems more satisfying! Not so much of a headache! I might get this DVD...
Most of my tires and slicks come from the Monogram and Revell Pro Stock and funny car kits. My chassis work is made up of either plastic or aluminum tubing. I often use chassis' from other kits. Hope this helps.
