  • Wow...really?

I've done security work at major important places that use these cards (or similar mechanisms).

Security are able to issue 'temporary' cards when people forget their original cards (for whatever reason) which happens all too often. Honestly if you told them 'go the fuck home until you get the card' they'd make DAMN sure to never repeat the mistake, but it is w/e.

When you tolerate that level of idiocy, any surprise about how inefficient your employees are? :P

  • @jcdenton2k:

Each and every time a card device is swiped, we see it pop up on our security monitors, for every single access anywhere on-site (and sometimes off-site if they are linked to the central computer, depends on the company/area).

Point is, if security happens to notice a string of unusual blips, we can have that highlighted and then use the cameras to find out who is using it.

If you try unauthorized access, you WILL get caught, just a matter of when.

  • Moral of the story, don't bother with this, you're better off either bribing the original person with cash (every person can be bought, pretty much) or killing them and taking their original card, then using it when there is the most 'foot traffic' at that location to make it take longer for you to be found.

Get in, get what you need, and GTFO. Though depending on what you need, additional security measures may be in place such as keys, additional keypad codes, or other biometric measures.

  • To be clear on the last point. I was referring to a hypothetical testing scenario. Don't be stupid enough to try to break into a place like that, never worth it unless you're insanely smart. If you're that smart you won't be on YT anyways.

Everyone can intercept anything, but good security will catch and track quicker than any automated systems could do so.

  • Alright, so before you congratulated yourselves... 1. Why are the edges of the primary card snipped? What's that for? 2. Just because reader beeps doesn't mean controller accepts the card, fires relay, strike releases and allows access. 3. If I'm going to go through all of the trouble (or have the fortune) to steal an original, valid card to a building in the first place, then what the hell do I need a card cloning device for? I'll just use the original valid card I stole to get access! WTF?

  • @mfriedrich2012 1. People snip the edges to make it easier to insert/remove from wallets/pouches. 2. Whilst we cannot see what the controller is doing, the LED changes state so under what scenario would you have a reader go from red to green on a bad read?

Cloning cards is pointless. If i have something worth protecting, I wont be using standard access methods like this.

  • i take it the data is not encrypted on the card

  • So does this work for all HID products? Are there any security measures to protect against this?
