mike rode her confidently because he new how good she was, hey he said that he had never gotten to the bottom of her, and in this breeders cup he reached the bottom and she almost won a race where the odds were stacked against her tremendously.... Mike you can ride my horses anytime.
@205seeme Quite right... It was his swollen Hall Of Fame Head that made him think he could let her drop 16 behind and make it up against a field like that... even so she only lost by the width of your hand... Zenyatta did not lose this race Mike Smith did...
@horshooer There was more than His Swollen Head that was a factor...Zenyatta dropped back and ran the same exact way she did in the 09' BCC.Have you ever sat on a horse that refused to go? Shit happens and she didnt like the dirt in her face...I think that was more of a factor than Mike having a Big Head.
@horshooer She wasnt on dirt when she raced...she ran on poly track..it doesnt kick up ike soft dirt.If you knew anything about racing you would know that you moron. She only raced on dirt twice prior to this race. Oaklawn...and she never got dirt kicked in her face in either of those races

This bloke might be the world's worst jockey, that is honestly the worst ride I have seen on a horse of that quality, his last 6 rides were bad, Dead set I could have won on that horse with 230lbs on my back! Get the worst Australian jockey going around and he still wins by 4 lengths in that race. Mike Smith, absolute muppet, how does he get a ride ever! He should be crying and it is his fault cause it is disgraceful if he ever get to ride another horse again. He should hang his head in shame!
Noone ever said that Zenyatta wasn't the greatest thing to racing in our time, because she is, her legacy will go on, she's one hell of a horse, Sharon
Nothing Mike Smith did was wrong, blame Zenyatta's inability to be able to handle the dirt and the kickback and not having tactical speed on the trainer and the owner, trying to pass Peppers Prides all time record led to them lying to the public about shipping to prep the horse on dirt. She was so surprised and mad about the kickback that she didn't run at all the first 1/2 mile, amazing she made the run she did as Smith said he was going to pull her up. He did his job. the trainer didnt.
@dubby300 i disagree. it wasnt the trainers fault. shes used to running on slower synthetics, which means slower pace which makes it easier to close cuz theyre so close cuz of the dirt, but now that she runs on a different track, different dirt, and against colts, she goes the same speed, but the problem is these are dirt horses, not synthetic horses, so theyre more used to it. i mean maybe if they moved her around states it couldve helped, afterall, besides this race shes only raced on
@dubby300 you have to be kidding don't you, he was f** 30 lengths off them after jumping ok. There is no way the trainer said before the race "If you could just settle 30 lengths off them, you'll be right". He won on dirt and made up the ground so we know he could handle the going. He had no reason or need to be back there, then to take the inside, well that's just disgraceful. The only reason I can think that Smith rode the house that badly, he had a massive bet on blame with an offshore bookie
@jorismathijsen Lol Idiot Taking the outside is dumb most ppl dont do it.. I would know I gallop race horses loser.. learn your facts. And he knows alot more than u do.. he knows EXACTLY what hes talking about.
Zenyatta would be better then Ruffian or Secritariet if she won, But in my heart she's the best but if my future horse wins the breeeders cup classic or the derby or belmont or the preakness or the most $ race in the world The Dubai World cup $10 million Bucks! Mike and Zen-master you'll always be in my heart. Mike if you have a youtube page please suscribe to MegaB1234567890.I already suscribed to Breeder's Cup World Champinship! PS Mike and Zen I Crossed everything for an Inquiry aginest Blame
Mike, you probably will be blamed for choking under extreme pressure, but I know if I was in your shoes, I would have done far worse. Heck, Kent D in the 1998 Belmont and Bailey in the 1996 Pac Classic all get questioned too. Shit happens. It just wasn't meant to be this time. Skip Away traveled EVERYWHERE, and for some reason, he couldn't handle CD. It can be a quirky track. But Zen tried her best and came home safe, and that's all that matters. Closer BCC repeater than Cigar, Skip Away, & Cur
Mike don't take this hard on yourself! Good ole Zenny couldn't find her footing on that track, I blame the track entirely. And Mike you did your best getting her on a groove, if the track was longer you would have won.
@mshobohorse I agree completely. At least the Moss's went for it. Rachel's connections wouldn't even try synthetic. Track surface makes so much difference and even with that she came so close.
Mike you did what no one could do and more. If there was a different jockey on her back it would have been worse. Zenyatta ran her heart out for you and no one else. You both are great!!!!!!
Hey Mike, true class, from the heart and we all know like you she was good enough but racing throws it's curve balls and that was one. You deserve great credit for getting up there and spilling your guts and your emotions. It raises you up above the norm and brings you down to the punters level. All the best
I can't think of a single horse in training who could have accomplished Zenyatta's "losing" performance in the classic. Blame got a dream trip. Zenyatta had many obstacles to overcome, and boy did she ever! That's was a performance of a GREAT horse.
God, Mike cried because he couldn't send Zenyatta sooner to win her 2nd straight Classic. He shouldn't blame himslef for not doing so in the first place. However, he should be lucky because he rode one epic mare.
I can't stop second guessing the ride so I can imagine how awful it is to BE Mike Smith right now. The move started just a little too late - she could have won and she should have won and she's still one of the greatest ever - Secretariat and Man 'o War both lost races.
Every horse is always going to have their skeptics and their doubters but Mike Smith and Zenyatta are still one the greatest jockey/horse teams in modern history! Zenyatta proved what a champion and true winner she is even in defeat. Congratulations to all of the connections of Zenyatta on a magnificent year!
i dont know of any other horse that could have done what she did
further back than normal even for her a track she wasnt comfortable with and still able to get it together to lose by a head another 10 yards she wins
zenyatta was far behind because she never ran against that type of speed on the lead and that caliber of horses. Mike rode a great race sure she could've gotten a little better of a trip but so could have blame. With her running style its virtually impossible for her to get a good trip .
@getzippy sry, at the end of the day there is no question in thier talent and CHAMPION ability. She was behind as always and that is her style, not b/c she was lacking. They placed secong by a nose and she came out of nowhere like always, catapulting by all the others. At the end of the day? They are superior in quality, athlecticism, spirit and all that it takes to be REAL CHAMPIONS! As all of us horse people know, one loss does not evaluate a horse. End of-
Poor guy. Sad to see anyone cry, but especially a man on national TV... and because he really, really cares about Z. Such a classy pair, and they will remain in the history books as such.
Poor guy. Sad to see anyone cry, but especially a man on national TV... and because he really, really cares about Z. Such a classy pair, and they will remain in the history books as such.
Thats another example of the man Mike Smith is. He has so much class! Mike has set the bar for so many people as a human being. I have had the pleasure of calling Mike my friend and second son for 35 years and am so proud of his accomplishments.
You and Zenyatta are a phenomenal team! Both Champions and everyone knows that you both are uncompable to any others in that race! You both have skill, athleticism, and will to persevere! You both have won the hearts and respect from the racing world, no the horse world! Stand proud and know that there will be greatness affliated with you both! Who knows what the future holds! I give you a standing ovation and honor to you both! You both have humbled the racing community! Zenyatta and Smith!
Come on Mike; you did a tremendous ride, I bet every single one of us who got the chance to see the Classic realized the great job you did to overcome trouble and finish strong. Still Zenyatta has written her name in teh pages of History; and you Mike, you are one of the all time greatest jockeys. You're ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN'' INCREDIBLE Mike!!!! Keep it up; you can't let yourself down...
Mike Smith: Keep your head up! You've accompolished what NO jockey has done with a horse that he/she is the regular pilot for these reasons (with no disrespect): 1)Peppers Pride & Hallowed Dreams really don't count because of the competition 2)Cigar 3)Citation. Take a breath and look at this! Cigar and Citation?! Sure, Cigar went around the world, xtra weight and all of that but you still gotta get around the track! You have nothing to be sorry for! You gave Her the Best Ride you could!
People that critisized this horse and said she wasnt "That Great" saw her greatness in this race.To never had run a race on a sloppy surface, come from 20 lengths behind with mud chunks flying in her face,Pass looking at lucky,Quality road, like they was standing still and come within a nosehair of winning proves how great she is...terrible trip and she still showed up.I STILL love this horse. In my heart..shes the winner of this race hands down
Mike is the greatest, he takes the blame but there is nothing he could do, great ride, great rider and the mare Zenyatta is and always will be a champion!
Mike Smith is a CLASS-ACT. Smith makes no excuses for the horse and is willing to fall on his sword to protect the horse that he loves. Simply put, it was the most amazing loss I have ever seen. Smith and company should be celebrating her great career and her greatness. It is sport. On this day he came up a nose short after riding a brilliant race and after her running a brilliant race. The sad part is that Zenyatta will be cheated out of "Horse of the Year", once again.
To see a jockey like Mikey even have a slight quiver in his voice is heart wrenching! God be with you Mikey, it takes a real man to cry on national television. You and The Queen are the greatest of all time! Love you Mikey and LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
She didn't get dusted in this race and she didn't have the best ride or cleanest trip. Human error cost her the race. It's cool, Mikey. Shit happens. Plenty of all-time greats lost and multiple times that are a lesser calibur than Blame. Onion, Dark Star, Coastal, Alphabet Soup, etc. As long as she is safe and happy. Doesn't owe me anything. Life is still bigger than this "game." Don't trip on it so much, dude. You both have to risk your lives out there to entertain us.
May peace come to you Mike..the triumph is that you brought her home sound mentally, and physically..the entire world knows what YOU are made of..and what that mare is made of. YOU made her shine..YOU rode her with kindness, and dedication..that is the mark of a champion. Your value, your courage, your competence is not measured by a nose. It is measured by your heart. You have won all of ours..be well. All of us love ya.
You and Zenyatta did the best you could Mike! It just took her a little long to get comfortable on the CD track. What an incredible run! Even though you didn't win you still will silence all the naysayers! She beat every horse in that race except by a nose to the winner who will likely by horse of the year...that's damn good. They all have to admit Zenyatta is for real!
He cares so much about Zenyatta... as everyone involved with her does, but Mike has a very special bond with Z.
It's really not his fault.. but he was crying when he left the track. I feel sorry for him because I know he's going to have to live with that for the rest of his life... but Zenyatta was truly amazing.
@getzippy Not good enough? She came from 20 lengths behind on a sloppy track with a bad trip and STILL would've won if the race had been literally a few yards longer. Zenyatta was ALL there, it was just an unfortunate trip.
And why was she 20 lengths behind? Because she couldn't handle the pace and took time to adapt to the surface/kickback. Blame, on the other hand, had the pace to get a good position and kick at the right time and hold off Zen.
Best horse won on the day - end of.
Please don't make up excuses, Zen had every chance to run down the incredibly brave winner.
@getzippy she also had a HORRIBLE start, sure she always starts slow, but she started running awkwardly. Mikey could have pushed her to get closer, but it is what it is.
Mike don't worry you did a fantastic job with zenny and ur a top jockey

I cry now. :(
Big hug to you Mike. You're still one of the best jockey.
BlackHorse0688 1 year ago
He cares so much about Zenyatta... as everyone involved with her does, but Mike has a very special bond with Z.
It's really not his fault.. but he was crying when he left the track. I feel sorry for him because I know he's going to have to live with that for the rest of his life... but Zenyatta was truly amazing.

Awww, he really does care and I honestly think the horse was not good enough on the day. Still a great horse, though!

@getzippy Not good enough? She came from 20 lengths behind on a sloppy track with a bad trip and STILL would've won if the race had been literally a few yards longer. Zenyatta was ALL there, it was just an unfortunate trip.
bubbles459 1 year ago
@bubbles459
