Paying bills was not at the top of Michael's priorities. It just wasn't. He either didn't think it was that important, or he thought other people would handle it. Either way, the majority of people who worked for him didn't get paid what they were owed for their work. This is well-documented.
@KeepTrue56 it's not necessarily Michael himself holding back their royalties, but in business terms, the name "Michael Jackson" encompasses all his production companies, etc. And technically, Thriller was his project, so yes, he's supposed to pay his bills to the director of the video and the actress that costars in it.

@davidnashley1985 yes, I am the first to know. However, I am not a NEW MJ fan, nor am I a blind MJ stan like some folks. John Landis also sued Michael for royalties. Paying bills was not at the top of Michael's priorities. It just wasn't. He either didn't think it was that important, or he thought other people would handle it. Either way, the majority of people who worked for him didn't get paid what they were owed for their work. This is well-documented.

@KeepTrue56 it's not necessarily Michael himself holding back their royalties, but in business terms, the name "Michael Jackson" encompasses all his production companies, etc. And technically, Thriller was his project, so yes, he's supposed to pay his bills to the director of the video and the actress that costars in it.

Why was royalties not being paid to John and Olay. Why wasn't Sony doing their job. I have always thought royalties were paid by record companies. I'm not going to have an opinion as to why John and Olay are suing now or why they were not paid in the first place. Anyways, is up to MJ estate to deal with it, is not up to us to form an opinions.

Is just like if someone used MJ songs without his permission and didn't pay for it. Is not only MJ who would have a problem with it Sony would too. Plus John worked with MJ for Black and White music video, obviously the royalties were still being paid to him for Thriller. So my question is when did royalties suddenly stop being paid.

@KeepTrue56 Yeah, is like I said I have always been under the impression that record labels paid royalties. John and Ola should sue Sony as well. What bothers me is that every time someone sues MJ claiming he didn't pay them people believe it including some MJ fans. What I have learned from my years of being MJ fan is that majority of lawsuit against him get thrown out of court. Some times MJ would lose. Other times both MJ and the person suing wins...if MJ has a counter suit against them.

The relationship between a producer and an artist is an intimate one. That vibe has to be there or it won't work.
