  • Heather Nova - Gloomy Sunday should be the title!

  • i dont want die !!! yet . . .

  • She looks like jennifer aniston from a distance.

  • So unbelievably chilled......

  • Made in Hungary. I'm very proud now. :)

  • so like sunday...

  • This isn't Portishead either... tons of stuff gets attributed to them. Gosh.

  • świetne wykonanie przeboju Billie Holiday

  • It's sunday, and hmm it is gloomy.

  • This is the Heather Nova version!!!! From the Album "South"

  • ¡¡¿Pero quién demonios dice que aquella que canta es Beth Gibbons?!!

  • Really cool! fav group! great piece!

    xx

  • fix the damn title already.

  • Damn, I was really excited for a moment, there...

  • not portishead

  • Rezso did kill himself later in life. Jumped from his room in Budapest. Survived the fall, but strangled himself to death with a wire in the hospital. That's pretty hardcore.

  • Rezso Seress created this song first. it was said to be a cursed song cuz everyone who listened to it at the time, later committed suicide or somehow died. Billie Holiday did a great jazz cover ov it, tho

  • beautiful Hungarian song.

  • WHo posted this title/ hEATHER NOVA is singing ...not Portishead...DUH...

  • love it

  • sadly......

  • esto no es portishead ni con cirugia en la gragnta... corrijan eso estupidos... sepan diferenctre la voz de la gran Beth Gibboe quien sabe quien es..

  • How do you do it? Brought tears to a grown mans eyes

  • I LOVE!!!!!!!

  • i love this woman so much lol

  • Oh My God. This is the absolutely perfect sound design of Rudi Spitzer's VEGE A VILLAGNAK next: SZOMORI VASARNAP.

  • Heather Nova.

  • i love song!

  • Why can't people stop giving other's songs to Portishead and name them rite?!?!?!? This is the second fucking song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why this song has 162 don't like? I can't understand...

  • Thanks Tombestone spotted that.

  • Hey this is Heather Nova or has this already been discussed?

  • @stevehawk1000 Dont know if you can see or not, but it does say heather nova underneath the likes bar.

  • Change the damned title if it's not Portishead!!

  • FYI the original is by Seress Rezső

  • @6c333374 Are you sure ? I was almost certain that Billie holiday was the original /:o.

  • @MrChristophe156 Rezső Seress composed the song in 1933. Billie Holiday's cover didn't come out until 1941 and while it very well may be what made it internationally famous, the song was originally played by Rezső Seress, titled Vége a világnak (End of the World). When lyrics were written over it, the name was changed to Szomorú vasárnap (Sad Sunday). The first person to record it in America was Hal Kemp in 1936.

  • @oendanlegur Oh cool man, I never actually knew that . I'll have to go check out the original some time, thanks for the info.

  • NOT Portishead... C'mon...

  • @ gigityify you'll be fine quit bitchin.

  • @danieltm3 lol

  • i was plannin on makin this my inspiration for a horror story but now i'm just creeped out..it's 11 pm and im all alone at home, omfg i'm not sleepin 2night D:

  • i thought this was heather nova..pretty sure of that

  • found this song on a sunday.

turned out sundays aren't always gloomy.

    ;D

  • The original song is Hungarian. Everyone can check on Wikipedia----> Gloomy sunday

  • This song does something to me, you forget where you are for a minute, gettin stuck in a dream, snap, awake again!

  • LOL!

  • ITS FUcking Rezso Seress

  • @MrNicPhoenix Is it just me or doesn't this sound like a womans voice?

  • Oh gosh, i am in love!

  • tan genial como el original de diamda galas pero este es mas censual

  • AMO este tema!

  • As modern arrangements go this is the best. The Hungarian violin solo is gorgeous. Gives a cinematic lush to this moody classic. Would have loved to hear a more nuanced vocal on top though....too bad Amy's gone!

  • I feel this song...:(

  • @jasonledyard1: Hey....now...they are an epic band just got giving this new shit a swirl back in the 90's when stuff was just blooming....dont fret my dear, history does indeed repeat itself. Patience is a virtue after all...

  • if u want a good version, then i recommend the Leander version.(original, hungarian version)

  • i was only dreaming...

  • one of my very least favorite bands ever. What a bunch of crap. I hate that they rode on gothic coat tails with their awful trip hop garbage. I hope a nuke deletes or melts every file that they they ever wrote. Just horrible stuff.

  • The perfect voice with the perfect song!

  • Oh, my god. I love this song and I love Portishead. The combination of those two is too perfect.

  • Oh, my god. I love this song and I love Portishead. The combination of those two is too perfect.

  • It does matter, when you mix Portishead with... this!

  • Not bad, however, the original hungarian version is the real thing. Just for that song it is worth to learn Hungarian. Still, very nice version

  • i like Emilie Autumns Version its lovely :D

  • one say WTF,,the other BUT i prefer...

  • ain't really

  • FAKE

  • Similar to Portishead but not, sorry. I am well acquainted with the female vocalist. This isn't her.

  • This version doesn't seem as creepy as the original. It definitely doesn't make me want to commit suicide.

  • @ViolinistZach218 totally agree. The great thing about the Billie Holiday version is the feeling of complete hopelessness.

  • @SlikSvelte True. The version I'm talking about is the true original by Rezso Seress its all in the voice that makes it creepy.

  • Comment removed

  • @ViolinistZach218 Is it on Youtube? Too scared to look. lol

  • @ViolinistZach218 Just saw it on the right in related videos... Dare I?

  • @hoffmanshades its actually very neat and the voice unique just skip the 2 min of bs

ps you wont die listening to it im still alive lol after many listenings

  • @ViolinistZach218 I'll give it a go later. This version was good though I must say.

  • Too perfect, to rigid in tempo. Any feelings at all. I prefer other versions-Sarah McLachlan, Bjork, Holliday.

  • not is Portishead is Heather Nova

  • @IRON699 +1

  • Sounds nothing like Beth Gibbons to me, :/

  • This sounds...a lot like Beth Gibbons >_>

    *shrugs* I dunno, whatever =/

  • If Portishead done this... wow.

  • @MusicLover2210

what do you mean wow, i dont think portishead could come up with such a simple and gayish instrumental, sometimes uneasy, but never neglected like this.

  • @vegetatedpoo umm what do you mean by gayish?

Homophobia aside, I was saying that if they done a cover of this song I can imagine it to be amazing, or when I listen to a cover by them of this I would say "Wow".

  • Hey, Jazzcloud - don't you read the comments? This is Heather Nova, not Portishead. Please correct a.s.a.p.

  • @whsonic latest activity: february 18th 2008. yeah i dont think he's reading your comments.

  • @GiantDoucheNG You not right The uploading date of this song: May 12th 2008 so that's could be the latest activity ;-)

  • @sztyepanka12 regardless, three fucking years ago.

  • mamar estos no son portishead :D idiotas

  • what heather nova! it s a hungarian song!!!! Stupids!

  • @angelwithdirtyface88 that'swhat they call a cover you morron -.-"

  • This is not Portishead, this is Heather Nova.

  • This is Heather Nova

  • Take the beth gibbons pic off this!! Sounds NOTHING like her

  • la version original es de renzo seres una canción hungara, que tiene una historia misteriosa de tristeza y tragedia en muchas ocaciones los suicidas tomaban la version original para quitarsen la vida !! asi se creo un mito urbano en europa

  • i dont really like this version... too...eh

  • I really, really like Portishead. But this is taking a good thing too far!

S(k)in(h)ead O' Catholic did a much more beautiful version, without ineffectual pauses, that I guess are supposed to be effectful.

If it works, don't fix it!

Sorry, not trying to flame anyone, but that's my honest opinion!

  • Mistaking someone as gracefully dark as Beth Gibbons for Heather Nova is a fail of epic proportions.

  • This is beautiful, but too upbeat. Takes away the sadness a bit.

  • Vous et vos chansons, mélodies sont hummmmm!!!!!!! le plaisir AUDITIF!!!!!!!!

  • Vous et vos chansons mélodies sont hummmmm le plaisir AUDITIF!!!!!!!!

  • THIS IS NOT PORTISHEAD

  • This is OK... but I'd pay good money to hear Aimee Mann tackle this.

  • Venetian Snares - Öngyilkos Vasárnap

  • Comment removed

  • i love this version.. ahahah

  • misleading title much?

  • Heather Nova, not Portishead

  • cuando deje de existir sonara esta cancion

pues cuando nadie se acuerde de mi

mi cuerpo estara en una tumba pero mi

    alma seguira aqui.

    fiel hasta el final

  • what album is this on???

  • THIS IS NOT THE PORTISHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JudeFawley666 Indeed, this is Heather Nova singing this tune

  • @DeeSaster1

All right, then please correct the title of the video...

  • @JudeFawley666 Can't. Didn't upload the video :)

  • She is amazing!!! Love her voice...

  • I like it but i like the original as well..

  • This is much too upbeat!

  • wtf THIS IS HEATHER NOVA not Portishead

  • @SimulacronX Yes you're totaly right

  • @SimulacronX

This is absolutely not Heather Nova. The original song is Szomorú Vasárnap (gloomy sunday) by Rezső Seress a hungarian composer. :)

  • @behindyourhouse Yeah I know what you mean. I have about 30 different versions of that important and unique song...

  • @behindyourhouse yes it IS!!! Heather Nova arranged/accompanied by Moby

  • I think Sour Times is kind of Portishead's own Gloomy Sunday already, in a way.

  • sorry Billie, this is the best ever. This version makes you FEEL, not feel overwhelmed or drug down . Perfectly done.

  • This is Heather Nova

  • no matter who sings this, this song is beautiful and haunting. i prefer billie holidays version, though.

  • This isnt portishead, thats not beths voice

  • Best remake of Gloomy Sunday is Diamanda Galas version :D

  • i wish the theme wasn't about suicide and death.. the strings are too beautiful for this to be about suicide.

  • @BassTest123 Who says death can't be beautiful?

  • The gipsy like violin sounds very nice in it. Interesting cover, a bit becoming easy- listening, stylising out the suicidal edge; making it more like playing with the thought, but not not going seriously with it. And that is not a problem.

  • The singer is Heather Nova, not Beth Gibbons.

  • I love gloomy as much as i love happy, there is a strange comfort in melancholy thoughts...............

  • I never knew about this song before. I've listened to all versions on youtube including the Billie Holiday (and I was sure it would be the best version of the song)...however, I feel Portishead's version is the best by a long mile.

How do you judge which version's better? Pick the one that makes your heart ache the most! Portishead manages that scarily well on this song.

  • hey,I got mates from portishead :D

  • um actually this is a billie holiday cover ..... she was the original....

  • It's not from Portishead, but Heater Nova, please change the title

  • People cover Portishead, not the other way around...

  • i am actually ashamed of either redoing this song in this fashion

  • 128 ppl didnt die after this song...

oh wait... 128 emos didnt die after listening to this song... thats better

  • @helljason nothing wrong with emo's dude :P

  • they say if u listen to this song u will die

  • @andyzan120

    everyone dies in the end.

  • @Myserieden jah...everyone dies in the end. a certain kind of death only: we pass through the door, go Home, maybe stay home....everyone dies in the end. " everyone i know goes away in the end" another kind of death for me. always dying...always being resurrected.

  • @andyzan120 I dont care. I am happy dying after listening to this.

  • it is the voice of Haether Nova. It is not Portishead...sorry

  • it is the voice of Haether Nova. It is not Portishead...sorry

  • How can you confuse this hot mess with Portishead?!

  • I like Marianna with her New Modern Criminals version a lot, lot, lot better

  • I love Bjork's version of this also.

  • yeah i subscribe the hungarian version is better!

  • What a beautiful piece of work ^^ I don't care people call this song cursed or that you will commit suicide hearing this song... I whould never commit suicide because ... if I do ... I will never hear this song again ...*clicks replay button*

  • Thanks to 126 people now the like/dislike bar look like a spliff

  • LOVE IT

  • @SelfDeception3 Yes, please, don´t to scam the people

  • Billie Holiday's version is awesome as well

  • If you don't know anything it might sound like Portishead, but no, it's not.

Hey ho, anyone heard the Christian Death version of this? It's rather more "Gloomy"

  • @grizzwaldo Listen to the version of Diamanda Galas

  • @BVSC1993 I have pal and it's, very gloomy :-)

  • dude..the original is by billie holiday.

    wtf.

  • @saraaahslaame no its not.

  • @0peacefrog0 you're right. i totally just looked it up.

that hungarian song right? my bad, i think i was just blinded by rage with everyone saying

this was the better version. seriously, what in the hell. but the hungarian one is actually really good too.

no sign of suicide though, lol.

  • @saraaahslaame haha:D good to hear that u dont want to die.:D im hungarian but i dont really like any hungarian versions of this song, i guess cause once i was in a restaurant with my family and suddenly some musicians passed by, so we asked them to play this song, it was unbelievable. after that nobody could change my mind.:)

  • @saraaahslaame not really, the original is by Pjotr Leschenko - Mratschnoje Woskresenje

  • music of reflects the people of his character, it is not surprising that people are committing suicide after this song

  • de todos modos estaria muy bien en voz de Beth Gibbons...lastima, adoro a beth gibbons y esta cancion es espectacular. La version de billie Holiday es fascinante

  • That is not Portishead. Not here, not in even in Wonderland!

  • if you think this sounds anything like Beth Gibbons, then you clearly need your ears checked.

  • Szomorú Vasárnap / Gloomy Sunday - Leander & Attila Voros --------> This's gooooood!

  • The original hungarian song is more better. That's light...

  • Okay, do me a favor, take Portishead's name off of this.
