Dude I don't know how u did it, but man, to my ears the recorded tone sounds like it jumped out of my record collection. Like early Van Halen or Ozzy.
I do sorta wonder if this can do a less of a "80s modded plexi" sound and more of a classic rock / Led Zep Marshall sound. Trying to choose between the Ht-5 and a Marshall Class 5 :)
@Crunchifyable I did some test recordings that I didn't upload that I got some plexi type tones. I used the clean channel cranked all the way. If I get some time I'll try to add that to the demos. Did you hear my HT-5 demo with a strat? That was on the gain channel but might sound closer to a plexi than this demo.
@Dirtbagratdog Yea I checked it out. The strat neck sounded good, maybe it bit fuzzy. I'm trying to figure out if the if the amp is capable of dialing out the open toe wah roar sound it makes on a bridge pickup with moderate-heavy gain. And I think you sort of have done it, when u played a little lighter (like on that hells bells bit at 4:10 & the start). But didn't realize u had gain on 10.
I'm hoping this would be improvement on my Marshall MA, tone and lower volume.
@Crunchifyable dude i had that SAMMME dilemma, the class 5 sounds great but it has basically no volume control unless u add an etinuator and it has absolutely ZERO clean head room. plus the blackstar has KILLER tone for the price and its 40 watts instead of 5. and check out some other demo vids. add a compressor in front or another classic drive pedal and u can get that led zeppelin tone ur looking for. message me if u want some more info on either amp. i have experience with both amps.
@giorgosegaleo If you could get your sound coming through a stage monitor loud enough, it might be possible, but I don't think you could hear your self on stage with just the amp. I tried the amp with a drummer and it was almost loud enough to keep up but not quite. I use the HT-60 for stage.
@afabandjon Yeah, I mentioned in some of my other responses that if you could hear yourself in a monitor or in ears with the amp miced, that you could probably use the amp live with a band. I never thought of using the direct signal at the same time. That's a good idea. The one time I jammed with a drummer with this amp, the drums were too loud. I do agree that miced and/or direct it can work.
i would like to know if you have the opportunity to try the mxr 10 band eq in the loop of this head and let us know the results... your video is actually the best mic'd out of all and i've listened to a lot of ones trust me... :) they say the eq really wakens up this little monster!
@TheMicrac Thanks for the positive comment. I used two sm 57's. One is close miced and one is set about 4 feet back. I moved the mics around a little bit from those positions until I liked the sound. I blended those 2 tracks to get the sound. Unfortunately I don't own the mxr eq so I can't try it out.
@Dirtbagratdog what if i buy one and send it to you so that you can make a video of it and i can do my evaluations? XD i own an ht 5, when i have some time i'm going to try one by myself, but it's not going to happen in a while... :)
@TheMicrac That pedal is over $100.00! You want to buy one and send it to me so you can hear me do a demo of it?? I never had anyone make a request/offer like this before. Do you work for mxr?
@TheTylerGeissler Yeah, the amp is the only thing producing the distortion. I had the distortion turned all the way up on the amp and controlled the amount of distortion using the volume on the guitar.
How did you keep the volume so even sounding? Given that you changed the tone with your volume knob, I would think volume would be all over the map. Maybe it was just your mic placement? It sounds great anyway! You leave no question as to the tone of this amp. I just wonder if I can count on it to be a bedroom amp in an apartment.

@Srinivassa I guess the volume does sound pretty even. Changing the volume on the guitar seemed to just add more gain to the sound. I think it would be a great apartment/bedroom amp. Even though I had the amp pretty loud in this recording, it still sounds good at lower levels too. Just want to mention that this is running through a 4x12 cab.
I was getting ready to sell this amp after getting an Orange Tiny Terror but You've given me the desire to give it a 2nd chance. You got some really great tones with it!!! Can describe how the close mic placement was?
@qwertyofasdf I miced a 4x12 Engl cab with an SM57. The mic was 2-3 inches away from the grill pointed at the bottom left speaker. The mic wasn't pointed straight into the cone but on a slight angle. The mic direction was pointed in towards the cab front, not away from the cab. The mic was also pretty much parallel to the floor. I also miced the cab with another 57 placed about 4 feet away from the cab pointed at the cab. I then blended those two tracks together.
hey i'm a bit confused about this amp maybe you can help me...I see on the front panel there is the overdrive section with a volume and gain knob. If you crank the gain right up can you use the volume to play at bedroom levels or will it lower the overdrive on the amp?
This amp is perfect for playing at bedroom levels. What is not meant for is playing live unless miced as it will be drowned out by the rest of the band.
I love and want Great tube tones but I have a real problem . I live in a attached house with many close neighbors . I desire a tube amp with good tone when it's played at very low volumes . Money is less of an issue . Any sugestions other than moving ? Thxs , Jerry .
@hutchfromba I think any of the Blackstar amps sound good at lower levels. I have the HT-60 and it sounds really great at lower volumes as well as cranked. I checked out the new Series one 50 watt head and there is a watt reduction so it sounds good at all volumes. They also make a one watt amp.
@hutchfromba you could try the VOX vt100 valvetronix is all tube and you would be able to adjust the watts in the back of the amp, so if you want those high gains at low leves is easier to achieve !! :-)
@TheWall198907 Thanks for the advise but I should have said I own 5 pedals 2 or 3 always on . I don't think there is enough headroom on the 1W due to the pedals . It's also a Les Paul with Buckers on it . 490t & 490r . Thxs for the input though . It was my fault for leaving that info out . I try to play Blues Guitar . Jerry
@TheWall198907 Yea , I've heard of hotplate attenuators . I have to read up on then . I think I need a head to easily install one . Thxs again . Jerry
@hutchfromba get huge sheets of the material corks on wine bottles are made of. put those mats one your walls of the room in which you are playing. then get a 1-10 watt tube amp with an attenuator.
@hutchfromba I'm sure someone's answered your question by now, since it's 8 months old lol
But you can buy any good tube amp, but you HAVE to buy an attenuator which allows your amp to be driven and get that "sweet spot" a tube amp has at much lower volumes. Best thing I've ever bought
@fretdeliciousTV I tried the HT-5 with a drummer and it didn't quite keep up. I would get one of the HT-Venue series to be able to keep up with a drummer or for live. I picked up the HT-60.
hi, can this get motley crue tones, dr. feelgood? I am looking for a small club amp with deep sound , how does this amp go over a loud drummer ? thaks
@cobol11111 I think it would work well for Motley Crue tones. I would get one of the other HT models ( HT- venue series) if you want to keep up with a drummer. I just bought the HT-60 and use that when playing with a drummer.
@VinnasBR Thanks! The cab is an Engl 4x12 with I think V 30 speakers in it. The guitar is just a Cort M 520 but I put some Dimarzio Air Norton pickups in it. I would like to put some videos showing me play. I just have to get a camera that I can sync to Cubase and not just a web cam. I like to do a real mic job and not just use the cameras mic. Any suggestions on a vid cam that can do that?
If I buy the mini stack, can I take it apart? I mean If I want to take it to school I only need 1 cab and for gigs I need 2. Would that be possible? I know it's a dumb question but please help. This is a kickass amp!
@TheMetalGuy01 In my opinion, the amp has enough gain to play Metallica. I've heard other people say that they prefer to use a pedal to boost it though.
@Dirtbagratdog unfortunatley they dont say...but usualy the jj tubes re the only ones which give that early malmsteen(ish) sound....i tried all the tube brands in my 76 marshall plexi and only the jj that gives a similar sound to urs...i strongly recommend it when its time for u to change it...u wont believe how awesome they sound
Sounds awesome! Is the reverb in the amp or are you using something? Can you use this in a live setting? I play with an 80's cover band that this would be cool for that if it can get above the drums. Nice demo. Thanks!
@Straydogsmgr I added the reverb to the recording in Cubase after it was recorded. I tried the HT-5 with a drummer and 5 watts was a little too quiet to keep up with a drummer. Blackstar has the HT- venue series with higher watt models. 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt models are available.
@gunsproof I think the amp would be great for Megadeth type stuff. I took a listen to Headcrusher and that's a really heavy sound there. It's very saturated with distortion. You could probably get pretty close to that sound if you have really high output pickups. I think if you used a boost pedal into the amp you'd really nail that sound though.
Sounds really good. One of the reservations that I've had with this amp is the idea that it behaves like a distortion pedal. It really sounds like it actually reacts like an amp. Cleans up very impressively. Nice...
@anthonymogoolies Hmmmmm... not sure without comparing the two. The HT-5 is loud but is only 5 watts though. Blackstar has 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt versions of the HT amps if the 5 watt isn't loud enough. Is the Marshall tube or solid state? I hear tube watts are louder than solid state watts.
@jeffdisario I thought if you could get turned up in the monitor it might work. I don't think you would hear yourself on stage just from the amp though. I did try to use it in a band practice situation and it wasn't quite loud enough to keep up with the other instruments. The HT venue series has some higher watt models
@jeffdisario the HT venue series comes in 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt versions. Maybe someone on youtube has some experience with these different models and could tell you what they think. I still have yet to go check these newer amps out in person.
@BrainFrezz101 I thought if you could get turned up in the monitor it might work. I don't think you would hear yourself on stage just from the amp though. I did try to use it in a band practice situation and it wasn't quite loud enough to keep up with the other instruments. The HT venue series has some higher watt models.
Your playing is fantastic................ great choice of tracks to play, I could hear lots of my favourite bands in there Van Halen(Was it Panama?), Scorpions(Rock you like a Hurricane, AC/DC (Hells Bells) , Rush (Limelight), Black Sabbath (Children of the Sea).
Really glad that you did the demo using only the guitar volume to show how it reacts. that is the kind of thing that sells or turns me off on an amp. Great video, Thanks!
i just played one of these today cranked all the way, fucking killer amp for a crazy low price, im sold on this amp gonna get it ASAP. I actually like this a lot more than the marshall jcm 2000 dsl 100 i used before.
wow, he played "stars" by Hear 'n Aid...awesome. I just saw someone selling this amp on craigslist for about a $120. Might get it now...I have a tiny terror right now that i love...really digging these low watt amps.
I have a tiny terror too and it's great. switchable between 7 and 15W. I also love that I can get early black sabbath sounding tones, cream, AC/DC and a lot of crunchy stuff out of without using pedals, but the one downside is that it could do with a bit more gain. Guess that's what the dual terror is for, but I couldn't afford that at the time.
I just bought this little mini stack. Love it! Running a Boss ME 50 through the effects loop. I also have the Night Train, and I'm running that through a Carvin 2x12 cab with the stock British series speakers it came with. Small home recording set up here, and it works out just fine!
Dude ! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Great playing. Still trying to decide on this or the Night Train. any thoughts. This would be a practice/at home amp. I'm using the EVHIII and I'm very happy with it.
I had the night train and it had tons of gain but it was really, really, bright. You could probably use a pedal EQ to scoop it and possibly do metal, but it's a really bright amp compared to the blackstar
are you saying there is no eq or compressiopn or anything on this recording did you use the fx loop @ all. or is it straight to the amp then to the cab? did you eq @ all in the daw or any plugins?
The only thing I did in this recording was add some reverb in Cubase after it was recorded, nothing else. Nothing in fx loop either. Guitar into amp and amp to 4x12 cab miced with 2 57's.
Wow, this sounds really good. So juicy
ElectricTurkey1 1 month ago
Are the emulations active on the fx send or is it the actual amps tone.
gtarmn75 2 months ago
@gtarmn75 The sound you hear is a miced signal (two sm 57's) on a 4x12 cab. I only added some reverb in Cubase.
Dirtbagratdog 2 months ago
@gtarmn75 The cab emulation is not active on the FX send, it is the raw output of the amp.

this shredding part at 3:38 thought that malmsteen himself playin...its the exact soun d in marching out era
malmsteen80 1 year ago
@malmsteen80 I love the Malmsteen marching out era guitar tone.
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog well u got it in this killer amp...if u listen to his early demos u will find that its the exact tone as urs...really gr8 job man
i have a question ..do u have any idea what s the tubes brand in there??
re they jj tubes?
malmsteen80 1 year ago
@malmsteen80 I tried to look in there but can't tell without taking it apart. Does the Blackstar site say what the tubes are?
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog unfortunatley they dont say...but usualy the jj tubes re the only ones which give that early malmsteen(ish) sound....i tried all the tube brands in my 76 marshall plexi and only the jj that gives a similar sound to urs...i strongly recommend it when its time for u to change it...u wont believe how awesome they sound
malmsteen80 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog
Preamp tube is Ecc83/12AX7 - power tube is a 12BHT - dual triode so it is all-tube, solid state rectifier in a push-pull configuration.
I have one coming in a few days...price jump already begun.
This is the HT-Dual Pedal hooked up to a 5 watt tube amp.

@Dirtbagratdog Their made in Russia Electro-Harmonix.I'm waiting for my JJ's in the mail right now.

Sounds awesome! Is the reverb in the amp or are you using something? Can you use this in a live setting? I play with an 80's cover band that this would be cool for that if it can get above the drums. Nice demo. Thanks!
Straydogsmgr 1 year ago
@Straydogsmgr I added the reverb to the recording in Cubase after it was recorded. I tried the HT-5 with a drummer and 5 watts was a little too quiet to keep up with a drummer. Blackstar has the HT- venue series with higher watt models. 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt models are available.
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog If I were using a 2x12 chock full o' 100w speakers, would it be loud enough?
modestvermin995 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog
Hey, nice video man but i've got one question...
Is this amp good enough to play Megadeth with it????
You know very fast riffs, licks and solo's like "Headcrusher"
In my opinion Blackstars are better than Marshall amps
Cheers!
gunsproof 1 year ago
@gunsproof I think the amp would be great for Megadeth type stuff. I took a listen to Headcrusher and that's a really heavy sound there. It's very saturated with distortion. You could probably get pretty close to that sound if you have really high output pickups. I think if you used a boost pedal into the amp you'd really nail that sound though.
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
Sounds really good. One of the reservations that I've had with this amp is the idea that it behaves like a distortion pedal. It really sounds like it actually reacts like an amp. Cleans up very impressively. Nice...

how loud does this go? louder than say a marshall 30 watt combo?
anthonymogoolies 1 year ago
@anthonymogoolies Hmmmmm... not sure without comparing the two. The HT-5 is loud but is only 5 watts though. Blackstar has 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt versions of the HT amps if the 5 watt isn't loud enough. Is the Marshall tube or solid state? I hear tube watts are louder than solid state watts.
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
hello, first of all good demo!
is it good for live or 5w are not sufficient?
thanx
jeffdisario 1 year ago
@jeffdisario I thought if you could get turned up in the monitor it might work. I don't think you would hear yourself on stage just from the amp though. I did try to use it in a band practice situation and it wasn't quite loud enough to keep up with the other instruments. The HT venue series has some higher watt models
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
@Dirtbagratdog what do you suggest if i want the same sound but at higher volume,
i mean, wich head may work from the blackstar?
jeffdisario 1 year ago
@jeffdisario the HT venue series comes in 20, 40, 60 and 100 watt versions. Maybe someone on youtube has some experience with these different models and could tell you what they think. I still have yet to go check these newer amps out in person.

Great job and awesome tone from this amp head.

Really glad that you did the demo using only the guitar volume to show how it reacts. that is the kind of thing that sells or turns me off on an amp. Great video, Thanks!

hi nice video. can you answer what scale you used from 3.38 to 3.50. sounded kinda like alexi laiho from children of bodom.

@HiGainShredShow The scale I used was mostly all E minor in that spot. I was tuned down 1/2 step too.

wow, he played "stars" by Hear 'n Aid...awesome. I just saw someone selling this amp on craigslist for about a $120. Might get it now...I have a tiny terror right now that i love...really digging these low watt amps.
tbarragan29 1 year ago
@tbarragan29
I have a tiny terror too and it's great. switchable between 7 and 15W. I also love that I can get early black sabbath sounding tones, cream, AC/DC and a lot of crunchy stuff out of without using pedals, but the one downside is that it could do with a bit more gain. Guess that's what the dual terror is for, but I couldn't afford that at the time.
lostlemming 1 year ago
@lostlemming ya know, I ended up buying a fulltone fulldrive, put my od over the top. Look into doing something like that. Or a boost pedal too.
tbarragan29 1 year ago
so is this amp only 5 watts? or does it get loud with the cab???

Wow... this small tube head sounds awesome! I need to get this head for home use, my 6505 is just too loud with it's 4x12 cab.
RHCPfan 1 year ago
I just bought this little mini stack. Love it! Running a Boss ME 50 through the effects loop. I also have the Night Train, and I'm running that through a Carvin 2x12 cab with the stock British series speakers it came with. Small home recording set up here, and it works out just fine!

Dude ! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Great playing. Still trying to decide on this or the Night Train. any thoughts. This would be a practice/at home amp. I'm using the EVHIII and I'm very happy with it.
machinegunguitar 2 years ago
I was looking at the Night Train too before buying the HT5. I play a lot of Metal and I think the Blackstar sounds better for that.
Dirtbagratdog 2 years ago
I had the night train and it had tons of gain but it was really, really, bright. You could probably use a pedal EQ to scoop it and possibly do metal, but it's a really bright amp compared to the blackstar
upnorthbacon 2 years ago
are you saying there is no eq or compressiopn or anything on this recording did you use the fx loop @ all. or is it straight to the amp then to the cab? did you eq @ all in the daw or any plugins?
EMGlespaulMESA 1 year ago
The only thing I did in this recording was add some reverb in Cubase after it was recorded, nothing else. Nothing in fx loop either. Guitar into amp and amp to 4x12 cab miced with 2 57's.
Dirtbagratdog 1 year ago
I have the combo, but I might sell it just to exchange it for the head. It's an amazing amp.
All tube, 2 channel, shitload of gain, ISF knob, 5 watts so you can really crank it, 3 band EQ, effects loop, Footswitch included, low price tag!!
GET IT NOW ! OMFG! dehsudfhkifksebh
