  • Oh my God :'( this is so painful to watch, this must've been a short while after his heart attack, he looks and sounds so shaken it's heartbreaking :'(

He is hurt, it's all over him, I'm so sorry David for wanting you to return, I can understand how health issues shake you to the core, just leave him alone everyone, let him rest, he's done so much for us already.

  • Love this man so much..all his music, him as a person and he has always been my fantasy..since I was 16!

  • 1:46 ....

  • Cool! Love him.

  • Why is his eye black and why does he have a bandage on his hand? What happened?

  • @guitarriff1988 I think it was symbolic of a hurricane in New Orleans-he was representing the victims. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. I certainly don't think he was really hurt.

  • 3 people don't believe in Life on Mars.

  • I think he is sporting the black eye and bandaged hand due to the line 'sailor's fighting in the dancehall' maybe? I don't think he is genuinely hurt.

  • He isn't hurt. It's makeup.

  • @arabiansanchez It sort of looks like he has a wrap on his hand...who knows. Maybe he had to fight some spiders from Mars....

  • @arabiansanchez Actually, he's hurt.

  • @besourosuco102 'Actually', he's not. There are videos from the rest of this performance (with Arcade Fire) where he has no black eye or bandage. Therefore, you're either wrong or he magically healed in a matter of minutes.

  • @arabiansanchez

Actually the Arcade Fire was well after, like September 8th 2005, so it's not bloody make up, he must've got hurt when he collapsed from the heart attack..... show some damn respect

  • @OddPieceLady No it wasn't. I've watched the programme. Why exactly are you determined for him to be hurt? As for 'respect', earn it through sensible contribution instead of conjecture and misinformation.

  • @besourosuco102 "The high-water pants, the bandage, and the black-eye makeup reflected many ludicrous outfits of the past. Yet its reference to Louisiana's flooded, battered state also reached back to the aura around New Orleans, where Little Richard had recorded those first songs that electrified the boy from Bromley."

-from David Bowie: Starman by Paul Trynka

  • why is he hurt?

  • does anyone knows what happened to him back that time?,,seems like he fought or somethin´

  • This is definitely one of greatest last shows he gave.

  • also, why do some musicians always do the 'my good friend' bit? i feel pretty sure david bowie doesn't know her apart from saying hey in the hallway.

  • They definitely have met in the past; I recall pictures of her, him and Iman during A Reality Tour.

I agree that they probably aren't very close though, absolutely.

  • @glassinheart lol'd

  • sparrow, I think much of this vocal "strangeness" is performed on purpose, matching with the dissonant piano bits.

to me he's deliberately singing in and out of tune, just like he did on It's no game part 1, as part of this "old aching man" joke.

    kudos to bowie.

  • Bowie's a freak, no-one can touch this man. Universaly appealing yet never mainstream, so individual and unbelievably brilliant and original.

  • I would love to see anything new from David, I'm actually quite worried about him. Haven't heard anything about him in quite a while... :(

Does anyone know any 2008- or 2009-footage?

  • Comment removed

  • I very much disagree bowie will never end

  • There's a rhumour going round now at the moment, claiming that he's in the process of writing material for a new album. fingers crossed ey?

  • Allegedley Iman said on her bebo that he was "cooking up something" that we'd like.

I didn't check it out personally though, so don't quote me on that.

  • I saw it on Twitter, so I know it's true that she wrote it, but I'm not sure what she ment by that... But have you heard that Gail Ann Dorsey said in an interview quite reacently that he is working in a new album? :D

  • I made a video with photos from 2009 on his 63th birthday, you can find it on my page :)

  • Oooh... that first "Mars" note gives me chills.

  • Indeed! he puts so much feeling in here....

  • the low F with the higher A.. so beautiful

  • It's one of his best performances ever, but it makes me sad to. Not the song only, but just to see this legendary artist, looking bad or ill for the first time in his career. He looks better now, I recently saw a documentary about him, and he looks so much more happier. Older but wiser, not the skinny artist, no now he is the older, wiser man with a passion for music, and his family, god bless this god of music, David Bowie, and God bless america.

  • whats with the bandage?

  • It was only make-up for the song. He has the bandage and a "black-eye", both were fake though. If you watch him perform with Arcade Fire from the same night, both are gone.

    <3

  • i thought he was in a car accident right before?

  • nope.

  • i honestly didn't know that--weird, thanks. the 'he was in a bad accident' rumor has become pretty strongly associated with this performance.

  • Thanks for uploading it...

One of the most touching performances in the music history.

  • i love Bowie's songs and his performance but it's kinda sad for me to watch this vid :( not that i don't like the vid, it's just a bit touch of reality.

  • not to mention age; pure and simple.

I prefer his voice nowadays when it comes to the big notes. Songs like LOM? and Wild Is THe Wind are infinitely better in the 2000s than they ever were back in the day.

  • Amazing song, amazing artist......

  • don't forget the 2 pack a day cig habit for years. I think he's going to live forever. Well, for sure his music.

  • still got it! :)

  • Great performance once again...who is the lady at the beginning? I've seen her face a million times but can't remember for the life of me...

  • D:

    beautiful performance :3

    he's the best! :3

  • I think I might actually prefer Bowie's more recently live performances compared to his prime years. I guess its just because I didn't grow up seeing him, I like what is current to my age I guess.

  • And his voice has got worse since the early-to-mid eighties - not condoning drugs, but they do do things for the benefit aswell as negative.

  • Personally I think he's 10 X better at these big ballad numbers nowadays.

Any live version of this from the Ziggy era is pretty dreadful comparatively.

  • imo, it's less the age, more the lack of drugs that has changed his voice

  • I Love Bowie more than ever...............

  • To stop the discussion about political statement or not:

"it´s on americas tortured brow" - the black eye

"low man, beating up the wrong guy" - the bandaged hand.

    okay?

  • Perfect.

  • Actually the black eye and bandage could just be due to a Boxing accident. Bowie is known to spar. It's how he keeps fit. Its mentioned in plenty of interviews.

  • he did 2 other songs that evening; no black eye or bandage.

It was just a fashion thing.

  • that's all true. i saw the show and it was great. the thing is that i can't find any video of his last song that evening "fashion" if you know anywhere i can find it, i'b be grateful ;)

  • He did Fashion at Fashion Rocks 2003 I think, not this one.

It was on youtube a while back. it probably still is somewhere.

  • .and another thing, his trousers are up so high because he's making a statement about the effects of big business on the garment trade in Africa. He is CLEARLY saying that the cost of big business for African trade is TOO HIGH. Trade barriers NEED TO BE LOWERED so Africans can export their garments at a competitive price. Why? His WIFE is AFRICAN, that's why. You are all so STUPID!!

  • Would everyone stop going on about the bandage and the eye! He is a professional and an entertainer! He is CLEARLY making an artistic statement about how it has become FASHIONABLE to abuse the NHS or other health welfare systems in this country. He found this out after he got beaten up and had to go to hospital. Its all symbolic and he sings in a lower register to the record to indicate his disapproval of the way people RIP off the NHS. Just THINK about it!

  • I think you're looking in to this way too much.

    Bowie doesn't make political statements.

He's on record saying he doesn't want to be Bono or anyone like that.

If anything he's making a dark joke about how he is battered and bruised somewhat after his heart attack, but still here :)

Even that's stretching it a bit though.

  • Ill agree with that it would be good if he had another new character though

  • it would be awful.

  • why?

  • because he's too old to play pretend.

anyway he wrote his best music (berlin trilogy, scary monsters) after his character phase.

  • lmao

  • god, wish you posted this without the phony intro... she was awful... and yes, you do not critique Bowie, esp when he is performing his own song... I mean, who do you think YOU are...

  • he looks beaten up. ??/?

  • It's makeup, and an unnecessary bandage for dramatic effect.

  • that's awesome.

  • I mean performans.. not efort

  • this is such a booring effort.. look at sebastian karlssons version, ;)

  • you, sir, are insane. But each to their own.

  • I LOVE DAVID BOWIE!

    Thanks for uploading this!!!!

  • My favorite Bowie song, by a hair over like everything else

  • same here

  • What a great performance! Beautiful song. His piano player, Mike Garson, is fabulously talented. The new "Reality" tour DVD really shows his great piano skills. And as far as the comment about "fatbody", let's do a comparison of you, bionicbigfoot, at 23 yrs. and at 60 yrs. and see how you fair.

  • speechless

  • ugh...who's this fatbody pretending to be David Bowie? Good Lord, he's a mess. Shoulda quit smoking earlier, Ziggy.

  • Ziggy died in 1973; get with it grandpa.

  • your attempt at humour is very poor, if I was holding a glove I would slap you across the face and call you out. I assume ignorance is bliss in your world. Bowie is untouchable.

  • I care!! uhh i't gives me the goosebumps:D

  • Well even if it's only you who ultimately cares it was worth putting up then :)

    x

  • I care too. And phaatman is completely right. At first I didn't like this performance by my beloved Bowie too much, but now I know it was was the "pitch-bending" that ruined it for me too.

  • THANK YOU for posting this. The other versions of this performance have this weird pitch-bending sound quality issue that competely ruin them.

For anyone who's interested, I have just about every version of Life on Mars that youtube has on my favorites.
