I never said anything about universal health care, I said something about a public option, which is most certainly in the bill(s). It is proposed to be paid for by taxing the rich and glittering generalities like "reducing waste" and "reducing abuse".

The Public Option is self-sustained through premiums. It's not going to require taxes. We already pay more taxes than anyone in the world for emergency care which is subsidized. In 1966, the House M&W committee and president Johnson said Medicare would cost an inflation-adjusted $12 billion by 1990. In 1990, it cost $107 billion, 9 times what they said it would cost. However, I have read up on the whole health insurance co-op project and I fully endorse it. It's a concept cooked up in free-market principles, and the government is only involved by providing seed money. And controlling costs? There are currently people in small co-ops that pay about $50 a month for insurance.

We need drastic change, but I think the co-ops are the way to go. Many people are "insured" right now, but that doesn't mean they get good coverage. They're going to see that the PO is much cheaper and will probably cover more stuff, so they'll jump on the bandwagon, and eventually the PO will be the only option. I don't want to take that chance.

Read up on the co-op concept. This would work and would end up making costs a LOT cheaper than the PO ever could.

The Co-op mainly tries to improve the system we have now. It's good reform don't get me wrong, but I don't think it goes far enough. This system just hasn't worked and it needs to be changed in some way, not just fixed. PO will never be the only option. Even if it would get close to that point, what are you afraid the government is going to do with that? They don't get to profit off of it. Veterans, Medicare, and Medicaid have government involved. The PO is the right direction to go.

The 47 million patients (correct # of uninsured) aren't getting coverage now. I doubt those people are just going to rush into the hospital with insurance. They still have to pay premiums for their insurance, and those premiums are relative to the amount of care they will need. This bill improves a lot of the Health Industry in other ways that will attract more doctor's, nurses, etc. in the future. With our current system we are predicted to have a 33% shortage of doctors by 2025.
