This router fluctuates in wireless. Got the dlink bridge 1655 when I connect it to tis router it says that I'm getting an excellent connection in text but not the performance.
And I'm sure just because you test drove a car means that the car is always going to drive that good. It's not about "testing" it before you buy it. Try living w/ it, using it 12+ hours a day then tell me how it performs, if its like mine you'll find it crashes horribly often, speed drops randomly for hours at a time and has trouble at high resource tasks. PS: I install/mantain networks as a side job so gtfo w/ your "n00b"
The DIR-655 router is a piece of shit! I'm speaking from experience. If you bought this....return it now! You will really love it when your connection speed drops for no reason at all to 1MBPS.
Firmware upgrades are a joke! ALL OF THEM! It's the router! Buy NetGear.....their stuff is far superior.
Not sure the luck that others have but I've had 4 linksys wireless routers for reasons other than failure just upgrading purposes, and to me their routers are way better. Want a permanent fix for Dlink routers. 1. Take router and disconnect from network 2. Take hammer and smash it very well. That is all its good for. Taking out frustrations, and you'll feel happier.
Yes I agree with Plasticpopcorn4 this router is complete crap. It does exactly that it drops wireless constantly, needs to be reset constantly. And is very frustrating when you trying to get things done. Not that it matters but, YOU HEAR THIS DLINK!!!!! IF YOU CANT MANUFACTURE STUFF THAT WORK DECENTLY DON'T MAKE IT YOU DUMB RETARDS.
Hmm, some research tells me that the 655 actually has better range than the new 825, can someone comment on this? And what type of antennae does it use, eg 6x6, 3x3 or something else?
Yeah, USB 1.1 is quick enough to bother using your hard disk, and the D-Link USB over Ethernet protocol is reliable enough for file-transfers... (note sarcasm). It's good for printer-sharing (NOT print-serving), that's about it...
OK, at least it's not as hard as getting Youtube to properly thread these text comments so one can see who replied to what!
I will comment on things being possible but not working well, as in my long experience I'm sick of manufacturers' marketing hype and the reality being really crap instead and a waste of time... Anyway, peace.
I just bought one and I love it! I have 4 desktops, 2 laptops, a printer, an XBox 360, and a Wii and this was perfect piece of equipment to pull all of them together.
Hey, so u got ur 360 and wii connected to the DIR-655 NICE, that's what i was wondering, is if it works with those 2 consoles. By what u said, it looks like it does! Also i thought the wii only worked on wireless B. But DIR-655 dosn't do wireless B does it? Only G and N right? Also does this router have WEP encryption, cause i know it has WPA and WPA2. But the DS that i got only supports WEP encryption, so i'm just wondering about that.
There's a guest mode SSID, which creates a separate network for guests. I believe this can be set to whatever encryption you like: WEP, or WPA/2 mode. Different key, obviously, as well. Secure!
UkLucian if you have the standard settings and havent change admin password the password is nothing. There you writing your password should be clean and just click Log in. If you have change password, I cant help you.
you can network an external hard drive in the USB Port if you install the Shareport software (on dlink's website). You type the model number in the homepage search bar (DIR-655). Then click downloads and Shareport should be there.
Yes, you CAN, but it's a crap idea to actually bother. Trust me, I've tried. About the only time it would be good is for read-only media stash. Apparently writing is not reliable, and the port is only USB 1.1! It DOES support hubs though.
if i bought one of these could i just go put it in my room and plug it in to the telephone port and the power cord then put an ethernet cable in the back that connects to my 360 and another one that connects to my laptop or would i have to plug it into the modem which is downstairs?
I assume you have DSL because if you have dial up this router, and xbox live, won't work. Anyway, you need a modem to interface with the telephone line and the router. Then you can connect to your xbox and play xbox live.
I have this but the blue led light is a pain, i can't sleep, the flashing is lit too strong and glare right into my eyes...very annoy so i put cover behind the blue light...it really glow in the dark room...
I have a network camera on the top of my building (14 floor) and I live on the 10 floor (25 meters dinstance) with many concrete walls. Do you thing it will work fine?
I'm planning on purchasing this for my home. I'm new to wireless networking. I've looked at Linksys, Netgear and this (DIR 655) and this has by far gotten the best reviews. Do you feel this is still the best one on the market in this price range? Also, does it do well using devices in other rooms and upstairs? Any thoughts you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I got it to work, eventually. It was a BITCH to get to work - the hardest thing I've done all year, IT-wise. It took many, MANY troubleshooting steps. The character set in the wireless key is the issue, I think. Sony (I only tried a PS3 and PSP) has very very poor support on this issue.
Two things that threw me for a loop when i got this router.
-MAC filtering being labeled as "Network Filtering".
-The cumbersome firewall settings. It took me a day to figure out why my VoIP would not work with my new DIR-655 router. Rather than just putting my VoIP in the DMZ, I simply had to disable "SIP" in the firewall settings to get it to work. errrrrr
I have this (dlink dir 655) router and am trying to portforward for a bittorrent but I used a router instead of a modem to connect to d-link and am now having problem because of it, any ideas on how I should port forward with 2 routers?
I was a little vague. On the back of the router are ethernet ports, no telephone jacks. So you need to connect it first to a modem and than this router.
As for your question, DSL is a broad term and really is incorrect. There really only is ADSL and SDSL. Asymmetric digital subscribers line means your download and upload speeds are different while Symmetrical digital subscribers line means your upload and download speeds are the same.
So most likely, when someone says DSL they have ADSL.
Just my opinion, but from the routers I have tried, all the dlink routers that have the Ubicom interface are the best designed interfaces. Most other router interfaces look really bad. Like you said though, the having to reboot is annoying, but the router has more options than most routers do.

at least the gui is better than Netgear's. I have a WNR2000 and the web interface is the thing that pisses me off the most.

Supposedly if you have the router in the vertical position, the signal is stronger.

I don't know why people like Chicoman67 and
Plasicpopcorn4 are moaning.
I work in a retail shop and get to test many routers before i buy.
I found this router better than all Netgear routers, but the dir-855 Extreme is a very good router if you have deep enough pockets.
The Dir-655 Router is perfectly capable for anything if the user has a good knowledge of their computer equipment. Not recommended for "noob" Types!

This is a router but you need a modem to connect your cable or dsl signal with the router.
However, it will NOT work with dial-up and can not connect to a telephone line.
