Doesn't have that effect on me now, fortunately, but wow - what an intriguingly disturbing film!

try "The Castle of Otranto" or "Mysteries of Udolpho" they may be long reads (VERY long) but I find them pretty inspiring.
another suggestion are the works of Byron who was the first well known to have "bad" guys on the side of "good" although for their own reasons
