The newscasters would have been looking into the cameras. The only people who would have been looking at the buildings or the footage are the camera people. Everytime I see many people's video of the first plane hitting (the news footage), I can't help but be surprised they didn't edit out the guy saying "holy shit", because it is extremely clear you can hear him say it.

The newscasters would have been looking into the cameras. The only people who would have been looking at the buildings or the footage are the camera people. They would have heard the explosion first, or been told to look at the screen, and then would have looked. And to them, yes, it would seem just like an explosion.
