What must people have thougth when they heard Bach play this for the first time? Would it have sounded like a jazz piece to them? Today we have the luxary of studying and interpreting the music. But I imagine those first listeners awed, and maybe a little baffled by the sounds coming out of those pipes! I am awed by the sounds coming out of those pipes and can't get enough....LOVE IT!
Those chromatic modulations are based on symmetric diminished 7th chord, which enables modulations to 4 different directions or tonalities. I.e. you can interpret the same diminished 7th chord enharmonically in 4 different ways.
To quote Berlioz on his religious beliefs: "Bach is God". The great power and mystery of this Genius is gloriously manifest in this masterpiece. My warmest compliments to the organist for a truly excellent performance.
I personally love and enjoy all Bach's music, and the most relevant thing s that the coda or gran finale allways end in major; just perfect and so heavenly music. I'm sure God in heaven has all the CD's and DVD's and listens to them daily. Or perhaps, He's got the author up there and plays every day !!!!
Thanks for posting this Fantasia of Bach.Thats one of the most great pieces of the Master (the other is passacaglia and fuge in c minor). This fantasia is amazing!
I listen to this instead of Meshuggah. Great piece.

I love finding little hints of romanticism in Bach's music.

32' reed does not belong in Bach.
Organist?
Organ?
When?
Trost Organ? Thank you, brest

Yep, Trost Organ, and this is one of the "Bach-organs" I once visited on a tour called "in the footstept of Bach" I'm sure Bach loved the 32' reed !

jan moeyaert , I can think of no Bach organ work where a 32' reed is appropriate. 32' Principle with 16' reed is wonderful. But no 32' reed.
