Once again, another hilarious review with plenty of profanities to throw around. Matt Smith is indeed a legend and this game can be bloody hard at times but for some reason it is very addictive. Nice review. I liked the fact that this was one of the few games that had background music the way the speccy achieved this was through using the Speccy memory interrupt routines usually written in machine code. Basic music but it did the job.
I was 13 when this game was released, The perfect age maybe. It was a sensation in school. A little like Sonic was all those years later. A true classic, and still playable as hell.
Did I hear you saying Manic Miner was Matthew Smith's first game? It wasn't. He made Styx before this. It only had one screen and you had to shoot a witch or something at the end. It was a bit like those single screen game & watch handheld efforts. Why not review Styx?
Well it was his first game of note. I've played a remake of Styx years ago and thought it was pretty crap. When I've got through the other 6000 games review possibilities I'll consider giving Styx a look at. How's that?
Still looks good today. Haunting/irritating tune which transports you back to the days of old. Still as challenging and frustrating as ever. Preferred the Bug Byte version to the Software Projects one as it was a lot easier!
i wonder what matthew smith is up to today? i wished he'd go back to working on miner willy vs. the taxman (or whatever it was called). i'm sure he'd make lots of cash if he sold it on himself from his web-page. i saw that show ian lee did which interviewed him in the 90's. what a weird but interesting fella he is!
Matthew Smith was a one/two hit wonder. Right time right place. After that he was a worthless junkie to the Spectrum world. Took his cash and smoked it around the world. Shame he could have made his fortune.
Today Matt Smith lives from week to week. He's now what you call a new age person. Resides in Devon living off the land in a collective of fellow high seekers dressed in multi-coloured shaggy looking attire.
I'm portuguese. If you didn't notice that the english language is not my native language, this might be good. LOL
I wasn't sure if I could use the term "bang" for this situation. That's why I said: "I was trying to find a verb to describe what you did to your desk". In portuguese I would say "Bateste na mesa?". ;-)
Apparently during the review it was 1997, but afterwards the time-line resumed it's normal course and it's 2007 again.
PS: Apologies to Matthew Smith for the lunatic insinuations - I mean it in the nicest possible sense (ie: not in the 'he throws grannies off bridges for fun' context).

OK, so Styx isn't a very good game, but there are worse games for the spectrum. You've reviewed some of them. E.g. Dick Tracy

Yea and that was painful! I'm not doing any reviews for a bit but I'll keep Styx in mind though.

This game is incredibly hard!!!
Did you punch the desk? Maybe the playgame and music make some people piss off. Not for nervous and impatient people. LOL

I think I may have slammed the desk when I died! I was disappointed by how rubbish I was.

I was trying to find a verb to describe what you did to your desk. The first one I remembered was "bang"...
"Did you bang the desk?" - this doesn't sound right to me. Dam, I couldn't remember "slam"!
pedroac 4 years ago
is 'bang' too rude? some people can't say 'come' without giggling like halfwits. These are ordinary words.
