@theocruz02 bite? just two leaves coming together. i mean it will shut on your finger but it won't hurt. buts its not very nice to do to the plant. its take a lot of ATP to make the plant clothes it "jaws"
the main problem with venus flytraps is that they are EXTREEMELY vunerably to airborne fungi, the 1st venus flytrap i got dies in 3 days too,but the 2nd venus flytrap i had,
i put it in a sterilised plastic container, away from direct sunlight, not much watering, and fungicide. it lasted for about
5 months until i ran out of fungicide and it dies soon after.
aqpparently the fungicide:'captane' does the job for fungi.
@infoseeker228 I bought one and sat it in a dish of water outside in full sun with nothing (no fungicides, pesticides, fertilizers) and it is doing fine.
IF you get one that has been in bad (low light) growing conditions then you need to acclimate it to full sun. My Vfts love my californian dessert sun all day long.
it's a wet land plant. Usually low to the ground and in mild to cooler climates. If you have it in direct sunlight and it heats up too much for too long. It will cook it.
Now if you have a plant out on an overcast day with "full sunlight" then, in my personal experience, it thrives better. At least with the VFT i've had.
NAtural brush fires make it so that the Vft can still recieve lots of sun. Mabey we just haave had different experiences. But the people at the website sarracenia North West grow thiers in full sun.
i grow mine in full sun too. and it is actually healthy enough to flower each year and only be kind of sluggish for a week. but for my nepenthes, i grow it in a small amount of shade, but that studio vibe guy seems to not know anything. but mine have never gotten "cooked". they just love all that sun they get
Ya I have a couple that fkower also... or atleast they tried to. I cut the flower stem because both plants had been divided, one of them just in the last week. In spring and summer if I dont sheild my Nepenthes from miday sun they will die! The californian dessert heat would cook them within an hour Im sure. Aslong as I put them in bright with some filterd light aswell ( under pine trees) they produce plenty of pitchers for me.
that is how i do my nepenthes also. i have a nice big pine tree in my front yard that works perfect. and in illinois, it would probably take about an hour and a half.
i once tried to feed mine a grasshopper. it jumped out right before the trap closed. however, it then landed into another trap, wich instantly snapped shut. lol
@alivingsecret direct. TRUST ME. leave it outside, it will catch on its own but give it a constant supply of water. and dont listen to other ppl because it will eat dead bugs. they just have to be juicy
@IgnisGlaci I bought one not very long ago, but what happens is. there are 3 prickles on each side of the leaf, once it touchest 2 of them the leaf triggers and closes. those 3 prickles are like little more down on the leaf. so whenever something walks on the prickles, first on one of them and then on the other. the leaf closes. then he crushes it so the prey dies. and the next day its open again with a dead fly in the leaf(which he slowly eats from).
you vft owners should join the flytrapcare . com community. we can answer all your questions and help you care properly for your vft!! we also have a great section of other Carnivorous Plants.
I have one too, though mine is small. I got it 3 days ago. Not sure if you'd know the answer to this question but I'm going to ask it anyway - My one seems to have small green bushes/algae round the traps on top of the soil. Is this normal?
Yes it is. More importantly -make sure it stays somewhere in your house where it will get LOTS of sunlight and keep it wet with unpolluted rainwater (or if that's difficult to get, boiled kettle water that has cooled). Don't let it dry out at all (it's a swamp plant).
There are about three "trigger hairs" on the inside of the traps -touch one once: nothing, twice: it will close. They can close MUCH faster if the surrounding air is warmer.
NO. feeding them hamburger makes them die. u can only feed them insects, which can be found naturally as they grow wildly in a small part of south & north carolina,USA

I dunno hmmm....mine were really healthy in the 'full sun' they got. But it's cooler here too. So that could attribute to the not cooking them thing.
