Try to see "The Cargo",a Swiss produced film similar maybe not better than "Sunshine"-which I still hail as best Sci-Fi film of not too distant future.
as a movie reviewer you should look at the film on its own, instead of compairing it to other films its similar too, because now days its quite difficult to find a movie with a concept that has never been seen before. You can mention that it is similar to those 3 films however you shouldnt rate the film based of the similarities. because otherwise when the average person goes to see a film they dont think ohh this was stolen from so and so, but otherwise nice review
@xxiMusicManxxi - I would agree with you to an extent, MusicMan. I know it's becoming harder for movies to have original concepts. If this film had simply been "similar" to those movies I mentioned, I may have simply mentioned those similarities in passing. However, Pandorum did not simply reference those classic movies; It completely stole their concepts.
We have to remember that there is a big difference between paying homage to a classic movie and ripping off of it.
i respect your review but do disagree to a point that it is worthy to see and the few plot twists that were in this movie kept me engaged in the storyline and i wanted to see how it fit together and i found it more of a horror/mystery and an original way of describing how and why everything is the way it is
Your Alien analogy doesn't work. Nothing was released into the ship. Those creature are just the crew and their descendants who evolved over 900 plus years to the ship.
Ok, sorry. Released was a bad word to choose for the review. I should have "something other-worldly is running around trying to kill people," which is exactly what happens in Alien.
It's a claustrophobic environment in which something which is not suppose to be there is running around killing off people. Sounds a lot like Alien to me.
yes, dont whatch the movie that brilliantly combines different styles of horror, because it was shown before... omg what an argument -.- What wasnt in these days ? And what the fuck is wrong with PANDORUM? it was said that TECHNICAL term was ODN(AFAIR) and pandorum was a common name used by pilots. CRAPPY review.
My argument is that this film is nothing new to the genre. It recycled way too much from previous films for me to enjoy it. If someone has not seen the movies I've mentioned, then they could quite possibly enjoy the movie. However, I like to think anyone going into this type of movie has seen their share of "Alien" in their lifetime.
Saying this movie "brilliantly combines" the styles or horror is a huge overstatement. If you enjoyed it Fl0yt, I'm happy for you, but I saw nothing original.
@ProjectionistReviews Are you labeling Event Horizon and The Descent as original works, like really? Because they are most certainly not. Just watch films like Disney's The Black Hole and Solaris which Event Horizon was a mash up of. With The Descent you can just look up Jeff Long's The Descent and devolved human cannibals that became pale due to lack of sunlight was done before back in 94 in "The Lurking Fear". Old post but I felt that had to be said, maybe because I've seen too many movies.
@DevilMayhem666 - Haha, well there's typically nothing wrong with seeing too many movies. Lord knows I've seen too many over the past nine years at the theater.
You make a very good point, Devil, but I don't think I ever claimed that Event Horizon and The Descent had original screenplays. I'd be the first to tell you that Event Horizon stole certain themes and images from previous movies. However, that still does not excuse Pandorum from stealing themes from those other films.
@ProjectionistReviews While a film's job is not to write a story that is entirely original but to write it as if it is original. As critic John Kenneth Muir pointed out, Pandorum is apart of a long line of generation ship stories that go back to the 40s. What makes Pandorum stick out from its predecessors is how takes that concept and uses it to make a parallel between the notion of devolution and the Fall of Man. It also explores the phase "survival of the fittest" very effectively I would say.
@DevilMayhem666 - I agree with the "survival of the fittest" element of the movie, but the "fall of man" theme has been done much better in previous films. I would go as so far to say that the novel (and subsequent movie) "Lord of the Flies" had better devolution themes than this movie.
There seems to be a consensus that I hated this movie, and that's not true. Pandorum did have good elements of claustrophobia and survival, but any other themes were better utilized in it's predecessors.
@DevilMayhem666 - I think the film did explore the themes of survival and devolution well enough, but I also believe these themes have worked better in previous movies.
On a side note, it seems this movie has built a small cult following of fans in recent months. People who are devout science fiction fans have latched onto this movie and really read into it's symbolism and themes. I'm glad hardcore sci-fi fans are enjoying this movie, but I'd rather see classic examples get the same praise.
ok a few tips on reviewing movies: don't refer to the film as "this film" every fucking time you mention it. it shows that as a writer and a reviewer you are very static (unchanging) in your word choice and it just plain makes you sound stupid. second: try to break down the parts of the movie that you liked/disliked into catagories. this makes your logic much easier to follow. third: be specific. what horrow scenes have you seen before? how were they similar?
I like to think I do all of the above, mdfiend. I do my very best not to be repetitive in my reviews, but it's quite difficult at times. It would seem quite odd to say "this theatrical experience" or "this cinematic display" every time I wanted to simply say "this movie."
Also, if you watch the majority of my reviews, I do break down my videos into categories, primarily plot, dialogue, concept, cinematography, and occasionally acting and special effects.
Let me add that I am not a professional critic, nor am I an English expert. These reviews are just the humble opinion of a projectionist who has seen plenty of good films (and a fair share of terrible ones) and only wants to give his thoughts on them.
I thank you for your suggestions and support. Also, if I may offer some advice for your own reviews, try to speak up and be engaging. Nothing drives viewers away more than staring at someone's emotionless face with a uncharismatic voice behind it.
Quite a reasonable review and I agree with most of it. The first that came to my mind now is the reference to The Descent (I saw it some days ago for first time). It's quite similar in many senses put into a spaceship instead of a cave. However I find the character work better in Descent. Nonetheless, I would be more kind to this film and give it a 6 to 7 out of 10. It was entertaining enough that I didn't care about those flaws. Hey, explosions sound loud in space in Star Wars don't they? :-)
I'll probably rent it when it comes out. Glad you mentioned event horizon. That movie is awsome & not alot of poeple know about it. Zombieland this weekend.
