Man, its a crying shame that the left has no respect for our troops who selflessly gave there lives so that we remain free but yet it goes to show there true colors of what they really think of our country, our people, our military, and our way of life...in other words it goes to show that if they don't support and respect our military then they don't support freedom and honor, they have no morals nor honor cause they crave and lust for power cuz it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
@georgelopezblows, not going to get into a debate with you, but its the other way around. If you don't agree with liberal policies, then they think you don't have an opinion and tell everyone who doesn't agree to shut up. And the left is trying very hard to shut down media outlets that don't agree with liberal agendas, so sorry, you are wrong on that front. I'm a big fan of Stephen King, and I don't agree with what he said, but its a free country.I know he's an uber-lib.
What has Stephen King done for our country? How about he has done more for literacy and encouraging and helping children/teenagers/adults/ start to read than probably anyone else in the history of this nation. Stephen King is a hero!
@Trascist I would love to see how long King would last in a real war not saying Iraq isn't but compare it to the batlle of Stalingrad say the Russian German war of 1941-1945 I would say about 4 secs.
@Colton8646 he's a writer, not a soldier. why don't you take a random marine and tell him to write thirty bestsellers? its the same thing as putting stephen king in war
@Colton8646 who are you? some kind of mindless extremist who agrees with any stupid thing they come across, like this video, and never listens to any trace of reason or logic? some people. you're the kind of person Stephen King would write as the asshole wannabe antagonist in a book who gets killed by the actual antagonist and is quickly forgotten. congratulations
@Colton8646 whats wrong with you? do you really think Stephen King is against our soldiers? if you sincerely do, then you're just stupid and i've been wasting my time trying to argue with an idiot
Hes trying to get people to stay in school you asshole. You asked Stephen King what he's ever done for his country, what about you? what have you ever done for your country? King is speaking his opinion not yours. If you were a real American you would realize he has the right to freedom of speech but I guess your one of those people who believe unless people have your beliefs they cant have their own opionion or speak their mind.
I'm left of center, but I don't think King is a fink at all. This dude is being a bit of a pansy about this. King stated his opinion, which doesn't stand for the rest of the
"left" so by saying that we're pathetic, this dude negates his whole argument. Inevitably some kid in that crowd joined the army, King is just stating his opinion. They act like he brainwashed these kids even more than the right did when they justified this war that no one wanted to begin with :D
Burn his books! Burn his books! Burn his books! BTW, I think Steve and John are referencing Dumbya, not just the dead-enders who have no alternative but the army. Do a survey of the socio-economic status of the grunts... what do you think you'll find? At least they have some sort of excuse for being relatively ignorant. Dumbya, with all of his privileged background, had no excuse for dragging the US into Iraq. Amerika: the one industrialized nation that makes a virtue of ignorance.
Stephen King didn't bash military service. He's just one of those rare Americans who are, well, thinking. And expressing himself, which is one of those freedoms we have as people living under the Bill of Rights. Though I know you Right-thinking people don't believe we have rights....
It's interesting that King and Kerry, who has repeatedly been said to resemble the first zombie to appear in 'Night of the Living Dead', should make nearly identical statements. Maybe it's as Roland said, "There are doors between the worlds."
I have lived within 8 miles of King all my life. He is a total loser in real life. Those who live here in the Bangor area have all known how screwed up he is. He is a scumbag.
Not everyone volunteers to go into the military, some join because it is the only option for them whether it is due to lack of education or poor lifestyle choices such as committing a crime and choosing either to enlist or go to jail It is an honorable way to serve your country instead of possibly just becoming a drain on it Police officers die at a much higher percentage than those who enlist and they don't get 5% of the respect and most have a higher education level than those in the military
This absolutely befuddles me. I volunteered right out of high school to go in the armed forces so I can do my part and they way people take their freedom granted is beyond me. They never had to fight for anything for their life. We Americans on the most part is really lucky. I found this out when I visited other places especially in Asia. It gave me a new found perspective of life here in the States.
@keithdra Didnt he volunteer towards the end of the US involvement when the war was going badly both militarily and politically, and he even disagreed with the war but did so to help with his fathers political career. Sounds to me like someone who knows a great deal about service, sacrifice and the most important and unshakeable loyalty of all. Loyalty to ones own blood. As the great Mario Puzo penned "your country aint your blood and you remember that".

"Exploiting" Stephen King for the jerk he is??? Don't you mean "Exposing". You can't read or write, I'm sure Stephen King is trembling at the prospect of you not buying another of his books.

Stephen King is absolutely right. The military does like people with low IQs same with the police. The military has become a tool for corporate interests. It's no longer a "honorable" duty, that went out the window after WW2.

The US military are war criminal scum. Only a braindead, racist piece of shit would "serve" in the army. The US troops should be put on trial and then hung for crimes against humanity. They're the reason that America deserved 9/11. America, MIND YOUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS AND STAY OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES COUNTRIES.
@UncleRabbit1 "The US war criminal scum are protecting your little punk ass. Don't bit the hand that feeds you." Heard it before--100 times. Still don't buy it. That military is there to protect our freedom--the freedom to have your own opinion about this country and the way it runs things. So you can take your "ungrateful traitor" nonsense and cram it. They are not just there to protect the people they agree with.
Stephen King... yet another bloated, pompous, self-important leftist douche with mediocre talent which has been blown out of proportion by like-minded leftist losers.

@USA4July1776 Shame on you and this dj. Stephen is saying you shouldn't end up in the military just because you have no other options. If you're educated, you'll have other options. If you want to join, feel free. But I have a friend who is a recruiter and he gets depressed because every day because he talks to these kids who don't really want to join but have no other real choice.
@HoudiniTheKing One shouldn't end up in ANY job for lack of options, this is true of ANY circumstance, so why single out the military?
Because the Left loathes the US military, that's why. Anyone with a hint of good faith recognizes that. The Left automatically sides with whomever the US military fights against, actively sabotaging war efforts at home while ading and abetting the enemy aboroad, and welcoming the troops back from war with spit and insults.
@USA4July1776 "so why single out the military?" Because he knows that's where most kids with few options end up. "The Left automatically sides with whomever the US military fights against" the military isn't fighting against them--they are just taking orders from our gov which is fighting against them---and leftists know that. You realize he gives money to veterans, right? You really think he hates military people? And you equate him with people spitting at the troops? How?
@USA4July1776 The military actively recruits young people who have had either a poor standard of education, a deprived upbringing etc. You dont see them going into prestigious universitys attempting to recruit the brightest and best. You see them going into schools going after young boys who would otherwise work in some form of manual labour. I left school at 16 with no qualifications and had a look at an recruiting office. They immediatley pushed infantry, logistics etc on me. Now at -
@grimblebrumble17889 The military actively recruits young people who are qualified, and who wish to serve. You certainly do see them going to prestigious universities to recruit the brightest and the best; I say recruit, not attempt to recruit, because they do; every commissioned officer has at least a Bachelor's Degree, and many also have advanced degrees, ie, better educations than King, who only has a Bachelor's Degree. Many enlisted personnel also have college degrees. You are dead wrong.
@USA4July1776 University studying to be a nurse at age 24 the same sharks are swimming around asking if I want to consider being an officer practising nursing in the RMC. Its the same in Britain, America, France. He wasnt having a go he was stating a fact. You dont have great educated encouraged minds sitting in fox holes. And the military is also a place for young people with no were else to go. A freind joined the RM because he had neglectful parents and no other family.
"The Nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools."
@USA4July1776 That statement is philosophy. Philosophy and practicality are very rarely the same thing. And as for cowardice, Id be interested to hear you name any western premier of the last 40 years who has been in an active service unit or indeed their children. Let us be frank, were it not for poverty, poor education, broken homes, societal ills and criminality often found within the poor communities we would not have an army to fight with. Poverty keeps the line thick.
@USA4July1776 I'm left of center and I support the troops. I even come from a military family. I don't support the wars, though. They're a colossal waste of money, time, and American lives. I would never side with the terrorists we fight, but we will never win against them with conventional tactics. History has taught us that a guerilla force cannot be defeated by conventional means on its own ground. (Vietnam, Yugoslavia, and the American Revolution as examples)
@shawn3975 Okay---you do realize that recruiters do have friends---right? That they grew up with people long before they went into the military? And teachers and cops--and they TALK to those friends about what it's like to do their jobs. You get that, right?
First of all he's not putting them down he's explaning that if nothing else works out then the army is an option, Second I do have a lot of respect for our troops they are one of the greatest people we have but we have no right being out there at this point and there is absolutely no reason to continue this war, Third talk about a hypocrite what the hell have you done for your country Mark sitting on your ass talking down to people on your show yeah thats a great thing to do, Im on stephens side
This is so funny! What a jerk and he proved the point mister King was supposed to be making: people in the army aren´t that intelligent. And the argument "What have you done to your country" is so amazingly stupid that I can´t even imagine a better way to say: "Hey, everybody, look at me, I´m an idiot." Nationalism is so 19th and 20th century. Thumbs up if you are against nationalism!
You're right. 18-year-olds should leave 10000 miles from home so that they can get their heads blown off and then become a statistic. That's the smart move.
i don't think stephen king was "putting down" the troops. i'm sure if he could defend himself on this guy's radio show or whatever he has he would clear it up. but this guy just needs ratings anyway so of course he's gonna turn this into an issue.
Stephen King didn't quite get it right. He SHOULD have said that if you can't read you can still (a.) join the military (b.) go to prison or (c.) sleep in a van down by the river.
I know for a fact that there are folks in the military that can't read and that there are some folks in the military that are are dumber than a box of rocks. But then again, I have met people like that in civilian life too.
King is just saying that literacy is important. This video takes it out of context.
The question is, what have you done for your *culture*? War serves no other purpose but to keep the powerful on top. What he's saying is that anyone can get a job in the military. If you have an education, you can serve humanity in much deeper and more important ways than killing other people. When you support troops you support WAR. End of story. It's as simple as that.
S. King & G. Ramero have it 100% correct. When REAL trouble comes to the US & I don't mean some Saudis that the Feds allowed in the US & to do what they did, but something BIG like Capt. Tripps or a few Nukes going off in the US & things get out of hand, does anybody think the Soldiers in US Military will do the right thing then? Of course not, they will "just follow orders" & kill as many US Citzens as they want or are told to. The Rot that produced My Lai is still 100% intact in the Service.
so he has an opinion its not like you dont have one either i think that they should bomb everyone else and let our troops come home but some people will think they should keep doing what they are so basically its just an opinion dont get all angry saying your not going to buy his books just because he had an opinion
The military is a place for social rejects and people that cannot seem to make it in the mainstream. Stephen King speaks the truth on this one. And sure, even though it is volunteer today... it never used to be. Smart people just don't go out and do something as stupid as joining the military unless they want to end up dead which is exactly what is happening to plenty of smart people that I "used" to know. God rest their souls and God forgive the rest of us for leaving them no choice.
@ProfessorCWI I guess you can thank "social rejects", for fighting the Revolutionary War, WW1 WW2 , Vietnam, KOrea, Desert Storm, Iraqi freedom, so you can sit on your smug ass and have the luxory of degrading all who fought and died for you. And your right, even though I served 6 years in the Navy, I wouldnt want to be active duty right now. We got an all theory no real world experience pompus ass liberal like you as commander in chief.
@sixstringb71 The military brought that image upon themselves. They are recruiting right out of juvenile detention services now. And just so you know, nobody ask you to do a damn thing for anyone. You are not fighting for me and nobody is dying for me. And I am far from being a liberal.
@ProfessorCWI Dude, where do you get your facts from? In case you didn't know, its actually difficult to get into the military. You need to pass a battery of tests, including criminal background tests. Not to mention, past drug use is an immediate disqualification. Just so you know, the military has recruiting standards that are actually quite high. Nobody has ever asked anyone to serve until they really need them...
@ZugZug808 Apparently those standards don't apply in the state of Montana because I can think of a handful of military personal that shouldn't even be in the military for that fact alone. Where do I get my facts from? Well, it is a simple observation.
@ProfessorCWI If recall, there is only one military installation in Montana, and it's an Air Force base? I've seen the standards and the hoops that the military places on recruiting and I've had to jump through them. And a handful of military personnel? Sure, some people fall through the cracks, but for the most part, the military is a well-rounded organization. Every institution has it's group of people that don't belong, and the military happens to be one among many.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ZugZug808 "In case you didn't know, its actually difficult to get into the military." Wow. I have a friend and a relative who are both in the military. You should have seen their grades in high school. Not exactly honor students. I also have another friend who was taken in, despite the fact that they had spent time in a mental facility as a teen. After 3 months, they were discharged for basically having a breakdown.
@ProfessorCWI Dying is bad but war is important. Especially this one, you are selfish by degrading the service just because you loose your friends. Your friends would not want it that way.
@assault82nd whatever you saying... I am saying that the military is the best school ever. If a person cannot read or write well, by the time they get out, they can. Turns rejects into warriors into superstars-people that I might actually want to be around instead of the jackass punks that shoot my windows out.
This video should be called "I take a quote of a famous liberal way out of context in order to score cheap points for the right wing", because the ignorance displayed is fucking astounding. "The left is so pathetic..." The left is just as fine and dandy as the right. YOU are the one who's pathetic you fucking prick.
Most hold on almost all of the men and women in the military can read and many love his books.Mr.King was trying to make a point that your choices are limited with out an education.I don't think he thinks that poorly of those fighting for us.
what makes you more american, mark levin? the fact you host an all-american, bread-and-butter radio show? here's some stars and stripes straight up your well-oiled ass: the most patriotic people in this country contribute to the construction of a healthy society, rather than get paid to piss and moan about things they consider unamerican. go wrap the american flag around a dead donkey's dick and jack it off.
fyi alber einstien wasnt ever considered a real scientist, he had a learning disability so he took everyone elses research and put it together, it wasnt even his research, im in the military and i can read, i think if you took offense to this that your skin is too thin
What has Estefano Rey done for his country? Well, he has actually done a lot for the world. He's given his readers a nice time and cool memories. That's much more than war mongering.
not to brag, but I graduated high school with a 3.5 GPA, including a gold medal for surpassing the min credits required to graduate. the reason I joined the Air Force is to travel on Uncle Sam's dime, and of course most importantly college education and service to this country. i would say 85% of my airmen have college backgrounds or are furthering their education. stephen king is just another ignorant retard who needs to think before he speaks.
"Even Albert Einstein said the same thing" - I believe Plato also did - that the poorly educated NEED to be led but to get back to the point KIng is not attacking the military but rather the shocking state of public education in the US. He also believes that the TV should be thrown out the window and kids should rediscover the joy of reading. I agree. As for this radio jock he is clearly flaming King to draw attention to his show and add to the two listeners he already has (his mom and pet dog)
@akindofblue3 Why does everyone do this. Everytime these big time celebrities or polticians speak something and it is shown for what it is people make it into something else. He used the wrong analogy to attack the school system our armed forces including myself are just as intelligent as anyone else.Reading is what he likes to do as a hobby, I like to workout and stay active. Reading doesn't burn calories and keep you in shape work does, the Military does.
What has Levin done? I'd like someone to answer that for me. This Pee Wee Herman voiced fake sits on his ass and talks. So, how is he all of a sudden better than Stephen King? King pointed out a valid point, especially from the era he came from, that the poor and ignorant are very often the ones who sign up with the Army or were drafted. The well connected were able to get out of service. Levin didn't serve. Cheap political fodder on the part of Levin. What a coward of a man.
Albert Einstein also became a legalized American citizen, a luxury that was payed for with the blood of American soldiers. He was a communist in Germany and a Zionist in Israel, and many people disliked him for his political views. He may be a genius, but like Stephen King, he too is another ingrate American.
It appears you don't know anything about the military or being in it. Political powers make wars with other countries. Sure, we do what we are told, but do you really think that pulling a trigger has no thinking behind it? Do we just point at unarmed innocent civilians and fire? Most of us have a lot of mental problems from the shit we see out there, so do some research before you blindly open your mouth and denounce the U.S. military buddy.
Being gay has nothing to do with the military you dumb motherfucker. Being gay in the military is frowned upon and illegal. Those who are found to be gay are court-marshalled against the UCMJ. I think you should die too. Hopefully Vladmir Putin will deem Slovenia an inferior country and invade you.
On top of it a shit load, & I mean thousands of troops get to go to college paid for by the service. It's a privilege too. But there are alot of people who serve who go to college & some of the most influential & smartest people who work in our country are former servicemen. Until any of you liberals spend a day in our boots on the ground, don't talk smack on things you know nothing of. Grow some balls while you're at it.
To the person who said it doesn't take smarts to go to war, you're a true moronic fool. You don't know anything about war preparations, the vast amount of training, education & technical, chemical & bio-chemical training involved. There is much more too. You have to be moderately smart, intelligent & interested in learning to fight in a war. Anyone who speaks of things never doing should just keep their mouth shut. Mr. King again is a moron.
I used to like his books & movies & still do but this is really stupid of King to say. Most G.I.'s are pretty fucking smart with the occasional dumb acts like anyone else. I never met a guy in the Army at least who couldn't read. Some people are quicker or better than others. Mr. King is a moron having never served in any type of service for his country. So he wouldn't really know. Most men in the Army are actually white, not minority too. Most people who join are white overall.
Being prior service military, I am highly insulted by what King said. Serving my time, I can tell you that the stereotype of those who join cannot read or do so because they have no other option is completely wrong. While there are some, it is a vast minority. Lastly, if you cant read, it would a bit difficult to sign the enlistment contract dont you think.
Stephen King is great. He was saying that if you can't read well, your options in life are more limited. Joining the military would be a good option for someone who doesn't read very well and doesn't have a trade specialty. He could have said 'gas station attendant' or something, but he was trying to scare the kids (his specialty) into reading.
i bet you this guy goes home after his little radio show, and makes sure his son or daughter has completed there homework. the army targets minority's on a massive scale and if your to blind to see that something is wrong with you. education is power, with endless possibilities. half the people in Iraq don't even want to be there and some don't know WHY THEY ARE STILL THERE TILL THIS DAY. king had every rite to say what he said, those kids should be so lucky to get advice from such an individual
Fuck you. I hate liberal scumbags like you that think they are above service. In case you didn't know either, people in Iraq are highly educated. You actually have to score moderately high on the ASVAB to get a combat MOS, and most recruiters will put the "high-school screwups" in the motor pool or supply. Sure, King has every right to say what he wants, PAYED FOR IN MY BLOOD.
Aw, come on, man! I was in the motor pool! Why ya gotta be like that?
I know what you mean, though. Combat troops get stereotyped as brainless thugs, but my friends who were infantry were some of the most educated, intelligent and friendly people I've met. God bless you, brother.
Stephen King is an angry man. He has a chip on his shoulder because the literary world doesn't consider what he writes to have literary merit. The only people who buy and read his stuff, and making him a multi-millionaire are in the Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy and serving in Iraq!!
King what said what most people know is true . I do'nt subscribe to political correctness. So what do you do when you do'nt have a job and no prospects , you go to the military . TRUTH HURTS !
Really? How much time did you serve in the military to know this truth? It is a stereotype and a horrible wrong one at that. You dont subscribe to political correctness? Seems more like you dont subscribe to any form of reality.
Even if that's the case, if that was his original point, it's wrong. Good luck trying to get in the military when you can't read, because guess what, they won't take you. You have to take a bunch of tests to determine your skillset, and no one is going to read the questions for you. You will have NO CAREER if you CAN'T READ, MILITARY OR OTHERWISE, let alone RESPECTABLE.
How can any of you continue to bash this man for what he said? He EXPLAINED what he meant, clear as daylight, and even apologized for it sounding wrong. Did you all just ignore that? And anyway, how can you call someone a rat just because you don't agree with their opinions? Where are the American morals in that? Entirely boycotting someone just because you don't value their opinion? Come on. That is just childish and ridiculous.
It's not childish or ridiculous. I was a huge Steven King fan, I own 40 hard cover books of his. I also served in the Navy during Desert Storm. My thought to this is that I must not be educated enough to read his books anymore. He should have just kept his mouth shut, keep his elite thoughts and attitude to himself......... I'll be selling all his books on ebay to try and get some money back from the $20-$30 I spent on each book.
He explained that that was not what he meant! He didn't mean everyone in the military wasn't educated! So why are you going to sell all of the books that you REALLY ENJOYED?
Bah, the "higher education" establishment has people just as brainwashed as the military one. I've known a lot of generally ignorant people who have college degrees, and a lot of intelligent folks who dropped out in the 3rd grade. What's intelligent, paying thousands of dollars for a fancy sheet of paper, or being paid a pittance by the government to risk your life for its own benefit?
Learn on your own, people. Beyond these movies and porno, the internet abounds with useful information.
well basicly what he did for his country was that he gave the american people SOME GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL ENTERTAINMENT, that's something that radio jerk could never do
did you even listen to what he said he said basically that people who are in the army are dum and dont know how to read and write while they are defending the right for him to say that
Heh, in order to join, your grades must be good, your physical fitness must be average, and you got to show some integrity and honest to God commonsense. Not only that, the military teaches, and there is a required reading list. Its worse for officers, who tend have at least a Bachelor's degree, as well as basic soldiering. Dunno where you lib-monkies think we're plain ass stupid, but it ain't the truth.
I'm in the Army. I graduated from a brick and mortar university and then I joined to claim 60,000 in student loan money. Sure, that was a REAL stupid decision on my part. Idiot liberals, trying to justify not serving themselves...
Dissing the Military and Dissing the Iraq are two completely different things, Iraq was no threat to us, Iraq didn't have terrorist until we invaded.
I'm fucking sick of chicken hawks like Ted Nugent and this asshole Mark Levin, what have you done for this country mr. Levin? were you services man? These are the people who are blinded by "Patriotism" that any critism of any policy is akin to treason.
I'm in the military and I agree. In context, all he's saying is...if you get an education, you have more opportunities. You also have more opportunity in the military with an education. That's a fact, too. Without an education you have the military and then not much after. I believe everyone capable should serve at least two years in the military, and it's not for idiots, but they teach you skills. In the civilian world, you need to have skills and knowledge first, and you get that at school.
ok I was in the military. It is indeed a shitty job. The impression of most people honestly is that you were too stupid to go to college. Sorry King had to be the one to break the truth to this old senile naive radio dj.
I apologize and withdraw my comments. I just realized that the person speaking isn't you. It seems you just repost things from the radio, which is technically against the YouTube terms of service, but I support fair use, so hey, keep it up. No hard feelings.
I don't think King meant to be un-American, I just think he was saying that taking the Army route doesn't always lead to the brightest futures. That may be much less a flaw of those who enlist and mcuh more with our whole nation.
An ellipsis (that's this--> ... ) is considered the end of a sentnce and is always followed by a capital letter.
If you're making the argument that people who can't read can do better than the army, then point well taken (assuming your half-assed YouTube show with two listeners constitues better).
But if you're an Army man, Maybe Mr. King was right.
If you're an Army man, and that's why you take such offense to his statements, then perhaps I should point this out - The word "can't" is written with an apostrophe. (That's the little comma in the air that signifies letters have been left out.) And I believe the word you were looking for was expose, not exploit as you wrote. To exploit is to use something to your advantage; to expose is to reveal or uncover as you meant to say.
Stephen King already said that he worded what he said wrong, happens sometimes you know? or are you so perfect you've never fucked up before? And another thing, saying what you said about another car accident finishing the job, that makes you a asshole. Even if Stephen King meant what he said, (which he didn't) saying that doesn't make you sound any better. I think you need to get your facts straight before you go wishing a car accident on somebody.
You are so stupid. Anyone with half a brain or more could clearly tell what he ment. He probably could have worded it differently but the message he was trying to get accross was wayy too clear.
And then there are also those who have plenty of options and still choose, not necessarily the Army, but the military. Either way, King should not generalize. We all have valid points and lucky for all of us we can express them.
i think the troops are very courages and i have nothing against them. the people who sent them there on the other hand is a different story, and i think thats what king was trying to get at too. people like this radio host are allowed to speak their minds but people should stop ignorantly absorbing all the processed information they hear, ESPECIALLY from the media.
Hey man Stephen King is right... you don't have to go to college to join the army, you don't even have to finish high school for some of the positions that the military offers. It doesn't mean that people in the military are stupid, it just means that it's an easier direction for them to take, for people who were never that interested in school or not very good at it.
My grandfather joined the army when he was 14 and I am proud that he did, but there are better options out there for ppl now
Perhaps...that depends on the individual. From our experience the majority of soldiers come home w/ no trauma or regrets. Nonetheless, the military is not for everyone & it requires a considerable amount of discipline. I'm proud to be part of a 'family' that defends & protects this country. As a Cuban-born American citizen I cherish all this country has to offer, something not all my family members have been fortunate enough to experience.
I could care less about Mr King,I just think he should have been more careful with his choice of words. If he knew anythign about the military he would know that every officer has a degree & if he makes the military a career he will retire with at least a masters (encourage & paid for by the military), and 90% enlisted will retire with a bachelors. I also think the military is the only place some of these "abandoned youths" can be help. Once again...just my opinion.
've seen it first hand and it all start in Pre-K. No accountability or consequences for anything. i don't think we have a terrible education system here, but there is definitely room for imporvement. Starting with the teachers & parents.
Actually, I have been a high school setting recently. I was a subsitute teacher at a local high school for the LD kids. As you know a lot of the LD kids are behavioral issues. Some of them may join the military, other will work at local stores & some will take over the family business. Do you have less options if you can't read? Of course, but again, why single out the military and Iraq? Just my opinion, I find his comments stupid and insensitive.
If Stephen King meant that you have more options if you can read or write, why end his comment w/...otherwise you have the Army or Iraq? What does that mean then. The Armed forces have enlisted and Officers. Officers ALL have college degrees & the soldiers that don't, can still read. I am neutral about Stephen King, however, as a military wife I find his comment asanine.
There's a video "Bush jokes about 2800 US deaths," in which John Kerry says more or less the exact same thing. Wonder why the media didn't blow that up....
This guy is a douchebag. Stephen King only meant that for most people who don't do well in school the military is their best bet or way to make a living, instead of going to some factory making minimum wage. There are brilliant people that go the military as well. He's just stating that if you read and write etc. You have more options that benefit you. I respect the troops, Stephen King has stated that he respected the troops, just not the war. But who respects this war in the first place?
i think stephen king does actually feel that way about our troops, but is changing his mind about what he said b/c he knows that is not a 'popular' way to feel. Funny enough my husband is an ivy league school grad, who along with other very accomplished individual joined the Air Force AFTER 911. He's already deployed twic and will again soon. And guess what he made that decision...and he can read!!!
We don't live in a perfect world. As long as countries exist, wars will be inevitable. Einstein said the fourth World War would be fought with stones and uprooted trees. War is a poverty of humanity, but it's never going to go away. And those brave enough to volunteer their lives to protect our way of life should be respected. Though it is sad that anyone should die for the sake of padding the fortunes of W. Bush and his croonies. That's what the Iraq conflict has boiled down to. Oil...
If the Army is so great why are they accepting convicted felons? Anyone with half a brain knows the Army and Marines are scraping the bottom of the barrel. They hang out at malls and street corners. I know about ten kids in my small community who just joined the Army because they didn't have enough sense to make it in the real world--they were/are losers--and will come back from Iraq (if they come back) messed up losers.
Not everyone who joins the military are losers. While they do have their fair share, so do many other jobs. I dont think King was trying to insult the military, but I can see how it could be taken that way. But dont shit on the military as a whole because of a few bad apples.
How can you say such an ignorant thing? It is apparent to me that you didn't do enough research to make a legitimate claim about the recruiting standards in the U.S. military. First off, it is on a case-by-case basis that convicted felons are allowed in the military, and that is only in the enlisted side. Officers cannot be convicted to receive a commission. You better be grateful for those 10 kids, because they'll be protecting you when everyone else is running and screaming, asshole.

ZugZug808 1 year ago
@ZugZug808 Apparently those standards don't apply in the state of Montana because I can think of a handful of military personal that shouldn't even be in the military for that fact alone. Where do I get my facts from? Well, it is a simple observation.

The well connected were able to get out of service. Levin didn't serve. Cheap political fodder on the part of Levin. What a coward of a man.

CamaroIROCInfantry 2 years ago
I used to like his books & movies & still do but this is really stupid of King to say. Most G.I.'s are pretty fucking smart with the occasional dumb acts like anyone else. I never met a guy in the Army at least who couldn't read. Some people are quicker or better than others. Mr. King is a moron having never served in any type of service for his country. So he wouldn't really know. Most men in the Army are actually white, not minority too. Most people who join are white overall.
CamaroIROCInfantry 2 years ago
Being prior service military, I am highly insulted by what King said. Serving my time, I can tell you that the stereotype of those who join cannot read or do so because they have no other option is completely wrong. While there are some, it is a vast minority. Lastly, if you cant read, it would a bit difficult to sign the enlistment contract dont you think.
CoveSinful 2 years ago
Stephen King is great. He was saying that if you can't read well, your options in life are more limited. Joining the military would be a good option for someone who doesn't read very well and doesn't have a trade specialty. He could have said 'gas station attendant' or something, but he was trying to scare the kids (his specialty) into reading.

i bet you this guy goes home after his little radio show, and makes sure his son or daughter has completed there homework. the army targets minority's on a massive scale and if your to blind to see that something is wrong with you. education is power, with endless possibilities. half the people in Iraq don't even want to be there and some don't know WHY THEY ARE STILL THERE TILL THIS DAY. king had every rite to say what he said, those kids should be so lucky to get advice from such an individual

totally agree :)

ZugZug808 2 years ago
Aw, come on, man! I was in the motor pool! Why ya gotta be like that?
I know what you mean, though. Combat troops get stereotyped as brainless thugs, but my friends who were infantry were some of the most educated, intelligent and friendly people I've met. God bless you, brother.

Stephen King is an angry man. He has a chip on his shoulder because the literary world doesn't consider what he writes to have literary merit. The only people who buy and read his stuff, and making him a multi-millionaire are in the Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy and serving in Iraq!!

sad, very sad.
truth is, if you cant read, you dont have a lot of options for you. THAT IS A FACT.
he's not saying that most of the people in the military cant read, just that those with a very low education are very limited in their options.

King what said what most people know is true . I do'nt subscribe to political correctness. So what do you do when you do'nt have a job and no prospects , you go to the military . TRUTH HURTS !
kasdri 2 years ago
Really? How much time did you serve in the military to know this truth? It is a stereotype and a horrible wrong one at that. You dont subscribe to political correctness? Seems more like you dont subscribe to any form of reality.

Ok. He said that if you can't read, your ONLY option for a RESPECTABLE CAREER would be the milatary.
DylanMonroe01 3 years ago
Even if that's the case, if that was his original point, it's wrong. Good luck trying to get in the military when you can't read, because guess what, they won't take you. You have to take a bunch of tests to determine your skillset, and no one is going to read the questions for you. You will have NO CAREER if you CAN'T READ, MILITARY OR OTHERWISE, let alone RESPECTABLE.
stochinblockin 2 years ago
How can any of you continue to bash this man for what he said? He EXPLAINED what he meant, clear as daylight, and even apologized for it sounding wrong. Did you all just ignore that? And anyway, how can you call someone a rat just because you don't agree with their opinions? Where are the American morals in that? Entirely boycotting someone just because you don't value their opinion? Come on. That is just childish and ridiculous.
jiffyjazzy 3 years ago 2
It's not childish or ridiculous. I was a huge Steven King fan, I own 40 hard cover books of his. I also served in the Navy during Desert Storm. My thought to this is that I must not be educated enough to read his books anymore. He should have just kept his mouth shut, keep his elite thoughts and attitude to himself......... I'll be selling all his books on ebay to try and get some money back from the $20-$30 I spent on each book.
darkenlion 3 years ago
He explained that that was not what he meant! He didn't mean everyone in the military wasn't educated! So why are you going to sell all of the books that you REALLY ENJOYED?

Bah, the "higher education" establishment has people just as brainwashed as the military one. I've known a lot of generally ignorant people who have college degrees, and a lot of intelligent folks who dropped out in the 3rd grade. What's intelligent, paying thousands of dollars for a fancy sheet of paper, or being paid a pittance by the government to risk your life for its own benefit?
Learn on your own, people. Beyond these movies and porno, the internet abounds with useful information.

toimiporsas 3 years ago
Heh, in order to join, your grades must be good, your physical fitness must be average, and you got to show some integrity and honest to God commonsense. Not only that, the military teaches, and there is a required reading list. Its worse for officers, who tend have at least a Bachelor's degree, as well as basic soldiering. Dunno where you lib-monkies think we're plain ass stupid, but it ain't the truth.
JusuchinPanjirinanu 3 years ago 2

I'm in the Army. I graduated from a brick and mortar university and then I joined to claim 60,000 in student loan money. Sure, that was a REAL stupid decision on my part. Idiot liberals, trying to justify not serving themselves...
timanonymous 3 years ago 3
Dissing the Military and Dissing the Iraq are two completely different things, Iraq was no threat to us, Iraq didn't have terrorist until we invaded.
I'm fucking sick of chicken hawks like Ted Nugent and this asshole Mark Levin, what have you done for this country mr. Levin? were you services man? These are the people who are blinded by "Patriotism" that any critism of any policy is akin to treason.
gooyzit 3 years ago
I'm in the military and I agree. In context, all he's saying is...if you get an education, you have more opportunities. You also have more opportunity in the military with an education. That's a fact, too. Without an education you have the military and then not much after. I believe everyone capable should serve at least two years in the military, and it's not for idiots, but they teach you skills. In the civilian world, you need to have skills and knowledge first, and you get that at school.
bribomcbainjr 3 years ago
ok I was in the military. It is indeed a shitty job. The impression of most people honestly is that you were too stupid to go to college. Sorry King had to be the one to break the truth to this old senile naive radio dj.
rams25 3 years ago
I apologize and withdraw my comments. I just realized that the person speaking isn't you. It seems you just repost things from the radio, which is technically against the YouTube terms of service, but I support fair use, so hey, keep it up. No hard feelings.
I don't think King meant to be un-American, I just think he was saying that taking the Army route doesn't always lead to the brightest futures. That may be much less a flaw of those who enlist and mcuh more with our whole nation.
ChrisDodgen 3 years ago
(continued from previous comment)
An ellipsis (that's this--> ... ) is considered the end of a sentnce and is always followed by a capital letter.
If you're making the argument that people who can't read can do better than the army, then point well taken (assuming your half-assed YouTube show with two listeners constitues better).
But if you're an Army man, Maybe Mr. King was right.
ChrisDodgen 3 years ago
If you're an Army man, and that's why you take such offense to his statements, then perhaps I should point this out - The word "can't" is written with an apostrophe. (That's the little comma in the air that signifies letters have been left out.) And I believe the word you were looking for was expose, not exploit as you wrote. To exploit is to use something to your advantage; to expose is to reveal or uncover as you meant to say.
(continued in next comment)
ChrisDodgen 3 years ago
Stephen King already said that he worded what he said wrong, happens sometimes you know? or are you so perfect you've never fucked up before? And another thing, saying what you said about another car accident finishing the job, that makes you a asshole. Even if Stephen King meant what he said, (which he didn't) saying that doesn't make you sound any better. I think you need to get your facts straight before you go wishing a car accident on somebody.
TeenNotKid 3 years ago
Stephen King meant what he said any fool can see he is back peddling because of the heat.
KilroysGat 3 years ago
You're just an asshole. You can't handle the idea of someone making a mistake. What the hell is wrong with you?
TeenNotKid 3 years ago
You are so stupid. Anyone with half a brain or more could clearly tell what he ment. He probably could have worded it differently but the message he was trying to get accross was wayy too clear.
DylanMonroe01 3 years ago
And then there are also those who have plenty of options and still choose, not necessarily the Army, but the military. Either way, King should not generalize. We all have valid points and lucky for all of us we can express them.
madony12 3 years ago
i think the troops are very courages and i have nothing against them. the people who sent them there on the other hand is a different story, and i think thats what king was trying to get at too. people like this radio host are allowed to speak their minds but people should stop ignorantly absorbing all the processed information they hear, ESPECIALLY from the media.
gooeytarwrist 3 years ago
Hey man Stephen King is right... you don't have to go to college to join the army, you don't even have to finish high school for some of the positions that the military offers. It doesn't mean that people in the military are stupid, it just means that it's an easier direction for them to take, for people who were never that interested in school or not very good at it.
My grandfather joined the army when he was 14 and I am proud that he did, but there are better options out there for ppl now
SundayVillian 3 years ago 2
Perhaps...that depends on the individual. From our experience the majority of soldiers come home w/ no trauma or regrets. Nonetheless, the military is not for everyone & it requires a considerable amount of discipline. I'm proud to be part of a 'family' that defends & protects this country. As a Cuban-born American citizen I cherish all this country has to offer, something not all my family members have been fortunate enough to experience.
madony12 3 years ago
I could care less about Mr King,I just think he should have been more careful with his choice of words. If he knew anythign about the military he would know that every officer has a degree & if he makes the military a career he will retire with at least a masters (encourage & paid for by the military), and 90% enlisted will retire with a bachelors. I also think the military is the only place some of these "abandoned youths" can be help. Once again...just my opinion.
madony12 3 years ago
've seen it first hand and it all start in Pre-K. No accountability or consequences for anything. i don't think we have a terrible education system here, but there is definitely room for imporvement. Starting with the teachers & parents.
madony12 3 years ago
Actually, I have been a high school setting recently. I was a subsitute teacher at a local high school for the LD kids. As you know a lot of the LD kids are behavioral issues. Some of them may join the military, other will work at local stores & some will take over the family business. Do you have less options if you can't read? Of course, but again, why single out the military and Iraq? Just my opinion, I find his comments stupid and insensitive.
madony12 3 years ago
If Stephen King meant that you have more options if you can read or write, why end his comment w/...otherwise you have the Army or Iraq? What does that mean then. The Armed forces have enlisted and Officers. Officers ALL have college degrees & the soldiers that don't, can still read. I am neutral about Stephen King, however, as a military wife I find his comment asanine.
madony12 3 years ago
There's a video "Bush jokes about 2800 US deaths," in which John Kerry says more or less the exact same thing. Wonder why the media didn't blow that up....
burntbritestar 3 years ago
This guy is a douchebag. Stephen King only meant that for most people who don't do well in school the military is their best bet or way to make a living, instead of going to some factory making minimum wage. There are brilliant people that go the military as well. He's just stating that if you read and write etc. You have more options that benefit you. I respect the troops, Stephen King has stated that he respected the troops, just not the war. But who respects this war in the first place?
lasotas 3 years ago
i think stephen king does actually feel that way about our troops, but is changing his mind about what he said b/c he knows that is not a 'popular' way to feel. Funny enough my husband is an ivy league school grad, who along with other very accomplished individual joined the Air Force AFTER 911. He's already deployed twic and will again soon. And guess what he made that decision...and he can read!!!
madony12 3 years ago 2
We don't live in a perfect world. As long as countries exist, wars will be inevitable. Einstein said the fourth World War would be fought with stones and uprooted trees. War is a poverty of humanity, but it's never going to go away. And those brave enough to volunteer their lives to protect our way of life should be respected. Though it is sad that anyone should die for the sake of padding the fortunes of W. Bush and his croonies. That's what the Iraq conflict has boiled down to. Oil...
burntbritestar 3 years ago
If the Army is so great why are they accepting convicted felons? Anyone with half a brain knows the Army and Marines are scraping the bottom of the barrel. They hang out at malls and street corners. I know about ten kids in my small community who just joined the Army because they didn't have enough sense to make it in the real world--they were/are losers--and will come back from Iraq (if they come back) messed up losers.
maggythecat 3 years ago
Not everyone who joins the military are losers. While they do have their fair share, so do many other jobs. I dont think King was trying to insult the military, but I can see how it could be taken that way. But dont shit on the military as a whole because of a few bad apples.
wcsprad 3 years ago
Wow, so apparently these "ten kids" represent the military as a whole? GTFO and go educate yourself, geez.
Raansu 3 years ago
How can you say such an ignorant thing? It is apparent to me that you didn't do enough research to make a legitimate claim about the recruiting standards in the U.S. military. First off, it is on a case-by-case basis that convicted felons are allowed in the military, and that is only in the enlisted side. Officers cannot be convicted to receive a commission. You better be grateful for those 10 kids, because they'll be protecting you when everyone else is running and screaming, asshole.
