I didn't like the window borders at first but now I see that when a window is maximised it doesn't hide the menu. Really cool. BUT!! What would be a cool feauture is if the window borders arrange themselves like tabs when they are maximised!
I have used BeOS on one computer and if the OS will run the BeOS software and has drivers for modern printers then I would be interested in it. Be didn't have many drivers for printers which hurt it, and a few other problems also.
What are you really showing in this video? opening help screens? i´d like to see mp3 playing, high res video streaming (mkv playback) and internet. what i would need for an htpc application. if HAIKU could hanlde that, it would be a perfect OS for multimedia PCs...
Wow.... WHAT is the point of this OS? It's atrociously ugly and slow. In their "Why not Linux?" section of their website, they say the purpose of making a unified OS is because of its speed--welp, mission fucking failed guys. Go install Ubuntu and call it a day.
@MrShoy I haven't... but I don't see a need to when Linux can quickly and simply handle everything you need.... Is BeOS for integrated systems maybe??
@staticfive I know, and I love linux too for its potential..but BeOs was a good system..I don't know..it had something I wanted..at that time btw, I tried both linux and BeOs.. and I was just curious..
It is a revamped BeOS, and I hope the company has worked more in correcting the crashes which plagued BeOS 5 which I still have a CD and Bible of. I also hope that they have the drivers for the modern printers which BeOS didn't have. If you didn't have one of the limited drivers with BeOS 5 you was out of luck unless you was a programmer who could write their own.
Booo! I wanted to learn something about Haiku. Not watch a random click-through and hear some goofy music. Seriously, Bon Echo? Isn't that the browser on DSL that only works with Flash 7?
@CrewRite I would not go that far, however, they are coming along nicley, and I use mainly linux, but haiku is on a few of my work stations. Linux and all open source is the only way to compute!
NetSurf is already ported on Haiku (but needs some polishing work). New WebKit/Chromium based browser project which is on GSoC this year, looks like major breakthrough. Mozilla is even slower on Haiku in compare to Linux, Vista and OSX (that is including shitty optimization).
Yeah, I must agree with you. But it's almost identical to Firefox, which is the slowest browser except Internet Explorer, so it's obvious that BeZilla is "not-so-fast".
IE? I bet you haven't used IE7 or (slow as hell!) 8 yet. You may be talking 'bout IE6, which is faster than FF, but it even doesn't manage to show png's with transparency properly, not to mention about standards compliance.
@pewusoft good call. I think if we are all techys, and looking at this page, its safe to say most of us generally have a strong hatred for M$. An we L0ve the open source community. 1
Actually BeZilla is quite fast even under VMware, but only if it's running on BeOS or ZETA. I don't know how well it runs on a Haiku native installation though.
@spaceball2k There is a WebKit browser project for Haiku that was progressing nicely last I heard. The developer was on FLOSS Weekly on the TWiT network a while back.
@spaceball2k Looks kind of... unofficial. But, eh, that's beta for you. Also, if this is a google operating system, shouldn't the default browser be chrome? AND, is this a form of Linux, because, It would be a huge hassle for downloads to add another operating system to the list of download options.

decozart 2 years ago
True, it's got potential. But it's very much a blast from the past. While some people like this i'd hope v1 is a lot more user friendly.
How does this stack up speed wise against say... Tiny Core? Or Slitaz? Or DSL?
SepradistPhantom 2 years ago
I think Haiku and React have potential.
The name Haiku could change to a name that's more simple to remember.
BeOs was easy to remember.
Just wish they would get out of Alpha.
Their definitely better than any Linux or Unix, I've seen.

Actually, IE is more fast than FF.
I hope the best for Haiku, it seems to be the open source OS we need.
