Peter Davison did have a hard time because he was taking the mantle over from the guy who everyone considers the best Doc nd personally I think he did a great job and JNT was right to take the doc from a quipping quirk to a more sedate toned down guy because that's exactly what the Doc needed, Tom's legacy is still being felt today in that people like David Tennant and indeed Matt to a certain exten now almost play him like Tom did and the Doc shouldnt always just be manic
@bluejeckett Tom played the Doctor longest, so many kids literally grew up with him. That in itself would be had to overcome. I think older fans at that time who understood the whole regeneration thing, and had seen it on the show, were more likely to welcome him...or those like me who was introduced to the regeneration concept from the get-go. To many, Peter simply replaced Tom and that wasn't tolerated. I personally think Tom was a bit over the top. Much prefer Peter's vulnerability.
@kamwrites Yeh I get what ur saying, Tom could be very aggressive in style I found during his tenure, like he was getting sick of the lines and having to share time with other actors or something. Peter was definitely a refreshing change after 7 years of manic.
@bluejeckett I don't know if it's true, but I heard that Tom had trouble getting along with a lot of the actors. He had his few favorites to work with, and grew very impatient with the others. That may have contributed. Plus, there's something to be said for playing it for a while and letting it go. I think he held on a bit too long. As much as I miss David Tennant, I think he was right to leave when he did. Well...one more year would have been nice...LOL!!
my god sarah sutton as nyssa is so fit! she was the first companion i got a crush on as a child the first time i saw her in the keeper of traken she sprang me into early puberty.
@doctorw2 She still looks quite young on the DVD interviews, She has lot her hair go a bit, All she wold need is a good sitting in BBC Make-Up department, and her hair coloured and permed, and BANG we have Nyssa back! (for a re-meet with the current Doctor??)
Everybody who expressed pleasure at John Nathan-Turner's death ought to be ashamed of themselves. Just because you didn't like the way he ran things! Well, I didn't like the way Russell T. Davies ran things either, but you don't see me wishing death upon him for it. If you don't like his era, don't watch it. It's that simple.
Yeah wishing someone DEAD is a bit heavy... Just because they make crappy TV episodes. Yeah ... I don't like Russell T. Davies, nor did I like JNT, but I never wished them DEAD.
If I ever wished someone DEAD, it would usually be for a more IMPORTANT reason... Not something petty like this...
@rockisheaven fuck you. JNT deserved to die a horrible death cos he killed classic WHO. RTD did the exact opposite. He made DR WHO more popular than ever. Even perhaps bigger than its heyday in the 70's.
@Tolstoy111 that fag should have nominated someone competant. Whoever hired him in the 1st place should be shot. They should have asked phillip hinchcliffe to come back. The architect behind tom bakers outstanding 1st 3 seasons.
@doctorwho1982 He improved DW considerably. The season before he took over was mostly terrible. He brought some seriousness to it and wanted to emulate the 60s Whos where it was highly serialized in between stories. Did he stay too long? Yeah but that wasn't his choice. He wanted to quit when the series was yanked in 1985.
@Tolstoy111 WHAT! IMPROVED? He ruined dr who. Made it look cheap and nasty. Compare an episode of dr who from tom bakers 1st year to his last? The last season had horrible crappy synthesiser music and the film looked cheap cos he started using videos instead of film. Plus the stories began to suck. It got worse and worse. Sylvester and colin bakers seasons were jokes.
@doctorwho1982 What a pity you make such good points about the weaknesses of the JNT era, and yet make yourself come across as such an undesirable nasty scumbag twat that it's impossible to take your points seriously.
@sadako24 I aint out to win an election. I just be telling the truth. JNT was a poor excuse for a producer and should have never been made the head man for dr who. He only succeeded in turning dr who from the serious adult sci fi series it was in Tom bakers first 5 yrs to total crapola even preteen kids thought was dumb. Compare genesis of the daleks to colin bakers timelash or even go further back and compare pertwees "time warrior" to mcoys "happiness patrol". Doesn't even compare. JNT sux!!!
@doctorwho1982 I have no disagreement with any of that, although I happen to think Enlightenment, which JNT produced outclasses a lot of Doctor Who prior, and certainly shits on the garbage RTD wrote. Sure JNT did far more harm than good and shouldn't have been given the producer's job- unfortunately a series of BBC miscalculations beginning with kicking Hinchcliffe off the show to appease Mary Whitehouse made it inevitable he got it. But that doesn't mean he 'deserved to die' for fuck's sake!
@sadako24 enlightenment was ok as are many of peter davidsons episodes but no comparison to the best of tom baker. If that had the production values of toms early days, it would have been better. It really went downhill when colin baker took over.
@doctorwho1982 Personally aside from Earthshock, Enlightenment, Caves I'd say the Davison era was awful and I wouldn't miss it if the show had ended when Tom left. If you're talking about production values though, then blame the BBC for giving the show so little money, I fail to see why that's JNT's fault. Sure there were bad decisions made by JNT but that's down to his lack of qualification, experience and savvy. So I'd be more inclined to blame whoever gave him the job than the man himself.
@sadako24 true. Anything JNT touched turned to shit. He should have been fired or quit long before the end of davidsons reign. The stories became shit and I'm not sure if dr who started getting less money from BBC with JNT cos production values slipped bigtime when he took over and progressively got worse. I realise that in dr who never had the lavish budgets & special effects of american sci fi shows but under JNT it really started to look like a childs show with a teletubbies budget
all the drs hated JNT. Peter davidson said he felt he was a victim of the tom baker backlash cos JNT banned tom from having any input, he also did the same for peter davidson. Telling him exactly what his outfit should be down to the celery, tellin him how to act.

They both felt the need to turn the show in their own personal Hawaiian shirt. I once read where Graham Chapman said he hated the fabulous, radical depiction of gays... so I'm guessing he wouldn't have been a fan of drwho after c. 1979. Graham Chapman is after my own heart - people like RTD and JNT give me the creeps. They're the sort that don't understand why people hate Jar Jar Binks.
Well, let say that I do like RTD for 3 seasons out of 4 but I criticize his over use of Sonic Screwdriver, Psychic Papers and infamous monster of the week.
Other than that, we must be fair and say that even if his physics are faulty, he really did a great feat to bring back Doctor Who and... Somehow a way less technocolored than JNT who made happen some clown costume over Doc#6!!!
@chris211073 ...Really? 'Rubbish...like you'? Thanks for the mature acceptance of people with varying opinions...nice to know how seriously I should take your 'opinions'...as in, 'not at all'...
@chris211073 this JNT fag sux balls! WTF he mean he wanted to play down tom bakers slapstick. Tom bakers dr was always witty and humurous. That control freak made tom leave and began the downward spiral for dr who
I think that JNT is what made Tom Baker leave the show, Toms humor and ad-libbing stuff, and offering suggestions, is what made the show what it was at the time. And getting rid of Dudley Simpson (the Music composer), was a bit mean, after all his music was good.
It was some "bitch-fight" during the last half of Colin Baker's doctor, that is where things REALLY went down hill.... And I don't mean Sylvester McCoy either, it was the silly scripts, and the BAD MUSIC after Colin B!
@chris211073 yes JNT that faggot ruined who with his control freakish behaviour. He drove the best dr (Tom baker) by tryin to take control of the show, taking away toms ad libbing and changin his costume and tryin to get him to wear make up. JNT acted like a prissy bitch and thats why tom, the man who launched dr who into international ffame. away. 1st big mistake of JNTs horrible career. It was all downhill for dr who from there.
@chris211073 worse than JNT? U got to be kidding bitch! RTD made dr who a cultural phenomenom again locally and internationally with great ratings. JNT took a show with great ratings that was already a cultural phenomenom both locally and internationally (thanks to Tom Baker) and killed it. He fucked it up, made ratings disappear into the abyss, made dr who look like a chheap childrens production & gave it shit stories to match. JNT killed classic WHO & got it cancelled after 26 yrs on air.
probably because of the same reasons! Control freaks!
Who on Earth would take a decent writers script (Tom McCrae), Twist it, delete most parts of it, and make it like his own?? (Return of the Cybermen/Age of Steel....) No wonder the guy pulled out of writing in season 4!
I penned a term for this messing. I call it script Murder. (yes! I'm talking to you Russell T. Davies!) He did not even consult the Writer.
@chris211073 RTD made dr who success and cultural phenomenom again whereas JNT drove a successful dr who into the ground. JNT sucked balls (literally and figuratively) and should have been fired after his 1st year cos he literally made Tom Baker quit.
@doctorwho1982 RTD has some good points, but a lot of BAD points too... When I read "The Writers tale" I was quite shocked to get inside RTD's head and his approach to writing who. I did NOT like what I read.
I sure as hell would not be caught dead writing like that. ESPECIALLY if I were an "acclaimed" writer of his fame..
(Ahh, yep, I can write myself. I did creative writing at Tech School here in Oz)
I think my Writing Teacher (R.I.P) would have had a premature cardiac, if she read RTD stuff
@chris211073 then why aren't you writing up dr who? Shut yr hole bitch! Yr creative writing at tech dont mean shit. RTD wrote some of the best dr who ever. His work on torchwood children of earth trupms anything to come from that dismal season 5 by SM. Bring back RTD!
@chris211073 i didn't say u lived in the UK you wannabe writer with yr "i studied creative writing at tech" bullshit. So u think that makes u an expert? When i see yr stupid ass name in the headlines acclaimed for writing something worthwhile one might take u seriously. Until then just shut up with yr creative writing at tech bullshit. Yr a nobody. RTD has done amazing things with dr who, elevated it to prime time ratings winner. Season 5 under SM was dismal and missed RTDs touch.
@chris211073 fuck JNT! That prissy fag decided that Tom baker had too much influence on the show (Tom baker who made the show the international success it was) and played power games. Silly muthafucker. If he had been fired early on, tom may have reigned longer. Plus JNT fired some writers and directors who had been with WHO for years and bought in his own people which is why the show jumped the shark. Good job that fucker died in 2002 of liver failure. Bloody bitch! ruined classic who
cont..JNT deserved to die of liver failure that bitch. He cut Tom Bakers reign short. Could have gone on for 10 yrs. Tom could have been part of the 20th anniversary with "the four doctors" if JNT had been sacked by the stupid BBC. Thank god for RTD.
@Tetrisrock JNT was shit with that comment. Tom was alweays a witty dr. Never just slapstick. Most of his wit and humour came from his own adlibbing and JNT that control freak fucked it up.
I've always been kinda mad at JNT cuz he was so quick to ignore/dispose of Tom Baker. He made some great changes (music, sets, effects, etc.) but in so doing he forgot the main part of the show which is the Doctor. I know he wanted to go a different direction but I can't help but think that if he let Tom Baker loose just a little (not to the extent of season 17 tho) and was a little more understanding, things would have worked out better for everyone.
@soulmanzrangerkind JNT was a control freak prissy gay drama queen bitch. He drove Tom baker away. Tom was the man america recognised as "the dr". He was one of the main reasons for the shows success. And i disagree with u on other things too. JNTs new synthesiser music & move away from film made dr who look & feel cheaper.
@DFORCE1969 Those things you pointed out I totally agree with you.
I liked Tennant, but his costume (too human and normal.. or trendy as you say), and since when do Alien Time-Lords from an advanced civilisation care about gelling up their hair??
I wont even get started on the "new" master portrayed by J Simms. Simms is indeed a good actor, but he IS NOT convincing as the Master, He would have made a good Doctor though. Maybe in the future...
Tom's hair did have to permed because he got sick and even lost some weight. I forogt what he actually had--some kind of virus;so for 'State of Decay' and maybe 'Lesuire Hive' he had to have his hair permed. But, I've never heard about the makeup thing and I can't a difference either. He never let anybody fix his hair 'cause he said "I'm to busy saving the universe to have my hair look good" which makes. Sometimes I think David Tennant's hair looks to style in the current series.
Tom Baker didn't wear makeup until the 18th season?...huh...didn't know that. I really don't think he needed to in the first place though...looking at the end of season 17 and the beginning of season 18 there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference.
I don't like his hair in Season 18. Too wild and long looking. Someone said it was b/c he got sick and they had to perm his hair. How can your hair get uncurled b/c you got sick?
I think his hair in season 18 would have worked if they let him do more of regular humor (not necessarily to the extent of season 17 but more like the seasons before that)...you know, kinda wild personality goes with wild hair, etc. :)
And with the humour thing.... They should have left Tom ALONE, and and get on with his way of things like before. He was an experienced actor for gods sake! And especially experienced with Doctor Who of all things !!!
@chris211073 agreed. Tom had his charather down pat and the audience loved it. Thats why america turned onto dr who in a big way. Toms dr with floppy hat and scarf became one of the most recognisable icons in the world and JNT that fag ruined it.
being ill, can make you look crap, and your hair can suffer too.... So your hair, not just your insides, can go limp and dry out, depends on what he was illness was.
I had five weeks in bed when i was 16, and all of me looked crap, and older than I was, probabably because i was not eating normally, but when I got better, I looked the same again. I Don't think Tom Baker was any different. being sick, can do lots of crap to you on the outside, as well as on the inside.
@chris211073 - I understand. Please don't think I was being rude when I made my comment. I had just never heard of anything like that happening. Maybe if I had curly hair I'd know.
Peter Davison did have a hard time because he was taking the mantle over from the guy who everyone considers the best Doc nd personally I think he did a great job and JNT was right to take the doc from a quipping quirk to a more sedate toned down guy because that's exactly what the Doc needed, Tom's legacy is still being felt today in that people like David Tennant and indeed Matt to a certain exten now almost play him like Tom did and the Doc shouldnt always just be manic

cont..JNT deserved to die of liver failure that bitch. He cut Tom Bakers reign short. Could have gone on for 10 yrs. Tom could have been part of the 20th anniversary with "the four doctors" if JNT had been sacked by the stupid BBC. Thank god for RTD.

@doctorwho1982 deserved to die is a BIT heavy.... Just fire/sack his ass is enough in my eyes.
BTW on the other hand, I don't Think it was Liver failure was the cause of his demise, I think it was something else....

JNT reminds me of Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride. Could this be why he turned drwho into Absolutely Fabulous in space?
prayfertrey 4 years ago 17
is that a rhetorical question?
matt2house 4 years ago
I wouldn't call Tom a slapstick doctor rather than a witty one.
I'd say he was very witty. Not that Peter wasn't. It's just the way that JNT phrases it.
Tetrisrock 4 years ago 2
@Tetrisrock JNT was shit with that comment. Tom was alweays a witty dr. Never just slapstick. Most of his wit and humour came from his own adlibbing and JNT that control freak fucked it up.
doctorwho1982 1 year ago 2
@Tetrisrock He was a bit of Both I think.... Slapstick, and witty.
I did not mind Pete Davison at all, I think a LOT of his stories were pretty good and well thought out.

David tennant looks too neat and trendy; The Doctor should be more bohemian and individual
DFORCE1969 4 years ago 5

I really don't think he needed to in the first place though...looking at the end of season 17 and the beginning of season 18 there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference.
cheesein 4 years ago 2
He didn't let them fix his hair between takes either LOL gotta love Tom he did things his own way
CosmoWho2 4 years ago 4
I don't like his hair in Season 18. Too wild and long looking. Someone said it was b/c he got sick and they had to perm his hair. How can your hair get uncurled b/c you got sick?
DrSeussThing1 4 years ago 2
I think his hair in season 18 would have worked if they let him do more of regular humor (not necessarily to the extent of season 17 but more like the seasons before that)...you know, kinda wild personality goes with wild hair, etc. :)
cheesein 4 years ago
@cheesein
Agreed.
And with the humour thing.... They should have left Tom ALONE, and and get on with his way of things like before. He was an experienced actor for gods sake! And especially experienced with Doctor Who of all things !!!
chris211073 1 year ago
@chris211073 agreed. Tom had his charather down pat and the audience loved it. Thats why america turned onto dr who in a big way. Toms dr with floppy hat and scarf became one of the most recognisable icons in the world and JNT that fag ruined it.

@DrSeussThing1
being ill, can make you look crap, and your hair can suffer too....

@DrSeussThing1
Nah... I never thought you were being rude at all....
Shit happens... Anyone can get ill, and it sucks.....

Talking about conveying tone on the internet..... Yeah tell me about it!
It has caused me numerous (and annoying) problems in the past!!!
Trying to convey harmless sarcasm, can be a REAL bastard!!
