im 13 right now and when i grow up my mom says shell pay for lasik eye surgery but i wanna know if this is better than lasik or PRK. I wanna know from which of these three are better
a. PRK
b. Lasik
c. cTEN
lol maybe when im 18 or older theyll have something better i dont know :P
There are many criterias you have to consider. Surgery invasivity, post opr. recovery time (this also includes post opr. pain manegent), the corneas post opr. biomechanical stability, incidens of post opr. complications.... If you take all of this into account, what procedure is best still depends on who is the surgeon, laser used, your corneal refraction, procedure. We use a 1 000 Hz Italian laser and with this platform we have had best results with cTEN.
@albula642 the bad thing is that the healing time is long. since you dont cut a flap. but its much safer than lasik PRK and other types of laser surgery
The patients job during the surgery is to look at a read light. The only instrument used is an speculum, to keep you from blinking. There is an high-speed, synchronous eye tracker in the laser. If you look to the right or left, the laser follows.
After starting with the cTEN procedure, our clinic have completely stopped doing LASIK. cTEN, is a one-step, no-touch, all-laser process in which a custom refractive treatment is performed without the discomfort of keratome or laser keratome high level suction on the eye, and with the safety advantages of not creating a flap in the stroma.
At about 15 seconds, you can actually see the epithelial breakthrough centrally. The epithelium is shiny and the underlying stroma is dull. The laser then starts etching the treatment onto the stroma as the epithelial removal extends to the periphery. Only the necessary epithelium is removed, no more. Refractive surgery does not get any more advanced than this. cTen is the only refractive procedure I would consider getting.
A few other doctors in Europe use it, But Dr. Stajanovic is the most well known. There are so few systems in use because it is significantly more expensive than the closest competitor. But the expense is there for a reason: it is the most advanced refractive laser there is and It is by far the best system to correct problems from prior surgery.
@freaky011 : Definately cTEN. iLASIK still makes a flap. There is no good reason to have a flap cut in your eye (that NEVER fully heals) if you can avoid it. A flap reduces the precision of the final shape and weakens the cornea significantly.
oh it went well, some pain the first days, difficutly seeing.. it has now been over 6 mo since i had the operation and i have about 0,5 difference on both eyes, it's not 20/20, but i see clearly and don't need glasses. you should wait till you are at least 18, maybe even 20. or at least until the eyesight is stable for about 1yr. i had it done in norway and it cost about 30000nok (apx. 5500 usd), but it was worth it imo. im glad i came over this technique as it seems to be a lot safer than lasik
If you are in the Virginia area, then check out FIRST COLONIAL EYE CENTER. They specialize in a procedure called supra-lase. This is a no touch procedure similar to the Trans-PRK in this video. They have a video on their site as well.
LASIK is finally all over the news and showed to be causing great concern. Google: LASIK FDA, LASIK SUICIDES, LifeAfterLasik, Lasik-Flap. The 95% success rate is bogus. We spoke in front of the FDA Panel this week telling them that there are about 10,000 hurt LASIK patients, not the reported 140 complaints they are stating. Anyway. Google: Brian Williams LASIK FDA NBC, LASIK CBS, LASIK ABC, LASIK CBC.
The best decision you could make is to NOT have LASIK, and never mess with a healthy cornea. Look into OrthoK or PRK if you have refractive surgery. Definitely google: lasik suicides, lasik dry eye, lifeafterlasik, and lasik-flap.

How is the eye held in place? What would happen if I randomly looked to the left during the op?

is there no microkeratome blade , no suction ring, no mechanical device of any sort? Thats COOOOOL. Elimiates a good mart of the risk involved!!
