Too bad in the sequel FF 3 Tormented..they followed the Crimson Butterfly Ending where Mayu became a crimson butterfly...leaving Mio alone well but at least she has Kei his cousin and she met Miku of FF1 and Rei of FF3
With all of the doom and gloom of the other two endings, it wasn't necessarily a bad idea to have an ending like this in the game. I'll admit that it may have seemed a bit too positive, but I can deal with that; like PhilosopherEdElric I too enjoy seeing multiple endings for horror games like these, they let you choose which ending you think is best rather than saying "Ok, this is the only ending you can get, regardless of what you do in the game." A much better alternative if you ask me...
Wow am I glad I never played the Xbox version or else I would have been let down. I like the PS2 ending better mainly because it's really unexpected. You go through all that and you end up losing your sister. It's sad, it's depressing, it's an ending that stirs more emotion in you than the typical "yay she's saved...". This version is so synthetic, fake, used up, typical and expected. Yes it's nice but nice doesn't always cut it. The original ending was genius this one is just Americanized.
The original ending is also in the xbox version... to get this version, you have to be on the difficulty setting, AFTER nightmare mode, which means you have to have had played it three times prior. So you really wouldn't have been disappointed because you would have gotten the ps2 ending first. And I found, after playing, medium, hard, nightmare, and the other mode, that it was a nice ending and i enjoyed seeing after seeing the other three endings.
You know it has all the other endings too, right? It's just a bonus. And not even a particularly important bonus (the big one is the first person mode).
I don't care, or it doesn't matter to me of what kind of ending a Fatal Frame game has. Like SIlent Hill, too. I love the endings and play-out no matter what. Fatal Frame is one of the greatest games with ghost.horror.ritual. My lovely wiccan ways.
Silent Hill is based of nightmares. :D And fears, and crazine---... Sorry, began to get ahead of myself. o.o
I was never satisfied with the ending where Mayu turns into the butterfly... I always thought it left a lot to be desired and I didn't like how Mayu died even after you went through all that trouble to save her. I do like the ending where Mayu is saved, but Mio is blinded. The bittersweetness is really nice, and the ending is still satisfied. This ending's great, too... but it's a little too ideal. If Fatal Frame 2 were a US remake of a J-Horror film, this would be the ending that would be used.
I mean, I literally predicted just about everything that was gonna happen (at first hearing that the ending was too happy and campy) I predicted the slow motion save, the crowd of butterflies flying up dramatically, all the ghosts (which, what the hell, weren't they all supposed to be vengeance-obsessed maniac instead of curious bystanders???) looking up with wonder in their eyes... blegh. So horrible.
What I really like about this ending isn't so much "yay, Mayu's saved" (though that is nice, too, after all that effort saving her, aiyaa), but the closure of all the other ghosts; the Tsuchihara siblings, Miyako and Masumi, Sae and Yae... It feels nice. Things are done.
it sucks the xbox has the only happy ending. lol cause itsuki is w/his sibs, masumi and his gf are together and everything's all happy and stuff.

In my opinion, I think this would be the best ending.

I expect they added it because they wanted the game to have higher sales possibility.

Ugh. This ending was so lame...
