  • that "latin feel" caption is priceless.

  • Cymbals are too intense, drumming is awesome though!!!

  • "Hey it's Jackie Chan!"

  • Genius. All those orthodox-grip evangelists listen carefully and stop being such snobs.

  • idk from a person with little interest in china cymbals, i feel like he implements it well. his groove is intense

  • I think this would be one of my favorite youtube vids, if he didn't have that china in his kit.

  • Puts a smile on my face. Such a special Pocket! Or as we say here- what a great lope!

  • such a fat tie. oh, and a very deep pocket.

  • @lukee1309 there isn't a roll from :14-:24 Do you mean the ghost notes?

  • Using a cowbell does not make it a "Latin feel" -_-

  • @chaoswarmech A lot of latin-american music uses a clapperless cowbell actually. I would argue it's a typical sound/effect used in that genre.

  • what's it called when he rolls the snare at :14-:24

  • drum school : groove 101

    anyone else taking this course!

  • My New Hero!

  • It's not just his drumming, it's his movements. His arms are so rhythmic and precise. He moves like the conductor of an orchestra. The man is amazing!!!

  • This man is beyond belief. . . a drum god!

  • Bernard Purdie completely changed the way I look at playing drums.

  • Nine people seem to have lost some rythmic sensation.

  • holy shit. latin feel was sexy as hell.

  • Quick! Someone bust out a note pad!

  • Purdie is truly the Grandmaster of Groove!

  • latin feel made me funk my freakin brains out

  • beautifully simple

  • He IS Groove!

  • Man this is too hot!

  • I remember I rated 5 star for this video when I just started drumming for 3 to 4 months which were like 5 to 6years ago(plus I've always been a heavy metal guitarist) This proves that Bernard is not Only able to attract professional drummers but even beginners aswell ..Until now, He is still one of my favourite.

  • Try playing that cowbell groove -- holy shit, WAY harder than it looks/sounds. Pretty Purdie is just too good, he makes it easy. IMO the best drummer alive.

  • the grooviest drummer ever!!!! period!!!!!!

  • Look at the two doofuses in the front row...they're like, "Wha?" I woulda been up on the floor, dancin' my ass off...hell I'm dancin' my ass off now lol

  • More Latin Feel please!

  • @LedLass i meant to thumbs up. lol

  • bernard is a great player one of the most recored drummers in history played with steeley dan. but i don't like the china listen to stealy dam you will hear the china but it sounds good in the ong but in a solo its to overpowering

  • @ROOTSROCK1000 He IS the most recorded drummer in history, and also that's the studio producer's fault for making it too overpowering.

  • Bernard "Pretty" Purdie genious

  • does anybody know what snare drum or kit he is playing here?

  • whoa, this man's got rhythm.

  • I'd love to hear MarloweDK lay down a funky ass bass line to this groove.

  • @Antiks72 Haha yeah that would be quite a juicy jam!

  • Bernard Purdie is the embodiment of groove proper. I know it sounds a bit silly, but to me, and many others, he is an angel of groove.

  • See more about Mr. Purdie on SoulDrummers . com

  • The 8 dislikers i believe must have misclicked while busily grooving along this.

  • damned ... 143.169 Hits..probably 10000 from my computer ;o))))

  • I came at 2:17

  • @svettjodd Sorry about the f bomb , I just know that when guys like BP are gone there will be no one to step up. The music business here in the USA stinks to high hell and nothing but bullshit is being put out there so enjoy the real stuff while you can. Pretty soon it will all be drum software and auto tune and by the way I happen to like ABBA and Vanilla Ice . LOL

  • with his eyes closed even lol

  • class is in session bitches

  • It really is a spiritual experience listening to Bernard groove. Its transendent.

  • I love his personality, teaching/playing style

  • its been said that a woman gets pregnant every time bernard purdie plays the drums.

  • @kickinitonthetube I believe that

  • @kickinitonthetube LOOKS Like he will be alive for ever then

  • hey svettjobb, go pratice the purdie shuffle, come back in a year and i bet you will stiil fuck it up, pour the rest of that haterade on your head.

  • @mrnipmip Sooorry I didn't know he was untouchable! I said I respected his abilities, isn't that polite enough?

(BTW, I DID find a similar groove almost three decades ago, improvising with my jazz-band, although I realize you wouldn't believe a corny Swedish guy could something like that (abba is actually not the only kind of music we do here ;))

  • god bless you purdie!

  • OMG!!!! this feels 2 good!!!!

  • Just goes to show that it's not about lining everything up perfectly. It's all the subtle offsets in the time that make it groove so hard.

  • one bad brother!

  • I have large respect for his groove abilities (with steely dan etc), but this is loud and insensitive playing, and with a drum set that does not fit his style well...

  • @Svettjodd

Well you probably have heard tunes from some of the 3000+ albumns/cds Pretty Purdie has played on so something he does fits.

  • @tattoo39369 Absolutely!

  • @Svettjodd are you fucking kidding???? this is hands down the most smoking hot solo drum perfomance on youtube. this is an aural assault ,sensitivity left out on the doormat.

  • pure joy

  • uh dont like the china

    incredible otherwise

  • GROOVE MASTER!!!

  • bernard purdie and cylde stubbefield will have one massive groove session....that would be hosted by steve gadd..the groove legends.

  • This man is a genious!!!!

Now I´m gonna go and burn my drums.!!!!

  • fuck... i guess this guy is OKAY... he has zero rhythm though...

    HAH

    (sarcasm much?)

  • @dontpushx woh i thought you were being serious then!!

  • you guys would love to read that somebody mentioned Travis Barker on another video just like this....I've been correcting all of them.......this guy has earned a listening ear.......

  • this man never ever ceases to make me smile.

  • does bernard purdie have children? they would be like mini gods. sweet stuff man

  • best drummer ever to me .. you gotta groove

  • MAN those gosth note are so perfect

  • dang that was like silk... @ 1:47-2:00 when they show the frontal view he looks like a robot the way he's jerking around lol

  • THAT WAS SWEET, WASNT IT?

  • Too smooth

  • also he plays on Steely Dans Home at Last

  • woaaaah what a groove

  • If you all wanna hear his greatest work, listen to him on "Oh Child" by the Five Stair Steps. He started it all.

  • They don't make 'em like they used to! No one like him... Period!

  • You've got that right

  • old skool beast

  • 2:17 - 2:35

    EPIC GROOVE.

  • check the high-hat - very smooth..

  • nice man))))))

  • Great vid, but I'm hatin on that china. Ugh.

  • Comment removed

  • eww on the china...but dayum on the cowbell :D

  • Chinas...devil's cymbal!!!

  • @avedisdrummer989

    trash can lid...

  • @avedisdrummer989 Yeah that china does sound kind of sick doesn't it. And I mean sick as in terminally ill, not awesome.

  • That china cymbal is bananas!!! Off the chain!

  • BOO YA thats sick!

  • I had to find out more about this guy the first time I heard Home at Last by Steely Dan.

    This rocks my shit.

  • his arm movements are tight as hell... no unneccesary shit, every hit is straight down efficiency. just awesome

  • this video changed my life

  • i know what you mean

  • @ColdToiletSeats Literally said the same thing to myself before seeing your comment.

  • @ColdToiletSeats mine too man... at least my playing

  • Great clip! Pretty Purdie's classic debut LP "Soul Drums" is finally available on CD + 8 bonus tracks. Not to be missed!!

  • I'd love to be able to play like that so much. I also love the way he gets so much enjoyment out of the noises he is making. pure class :-)

  • nobody like him

  • thats true, man!!

  • Geez. This man is a god.

  • Comment removed

  • God. That was amazing to hear.

  • This dude can work a drumset, for sure.

You can sort of see the way he hears it in his head when he moves his mouth to go along with the beats.

  • I couldn't help but smile when I heard the first part. This is my first time discovering Bernard.

  • My godness...the part of cowbell is so SICK.

  • yeah! I already unmounted my cowbell but now he opened my eyes !

  • I was gonna say something, but all that came out was

    uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh.

  • he is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can just imagin Bernard smokin' a fat cigar while groovin' on the drums.

    lol

this guy is really at peace!

  • it would totally fit

  • he'd be the grooviest grandfather ever. kinda like chef from south park

  • i couldn't have said it better

  • well ... this is sick ... just the truth

  • his one sick puppy....love it!

  • Thank God for drummers like Bernard teaching the rest of us how to groove.

  • How the hell is that crowd not up and dancing? The guys in the front are just sittin there bobbing their heads a little bit.

  • They're probably in aww

  • i am a drummer and i like to sit and enjoy and just take it all in. idk if they are drummers or not but i like to appreciate its beauty. :)

  • LOL I think they are too awe-struck to react properly. I would at least be head-bobbing like a mutha. Bernard is the man!!

  • yeah very cool groove! great Bernard!

  • "groove workshop" says the banner behind him. They couldn´t have a better professor. This guy is an alien. He must be.

  • !!!

  • he's got a jazz orchestra playing inside of his head and he can hear every single instrument while he composes his grooves...

    musicality in a scale of 0 to 10... 1000!

  • What an amazing talent...awesome groove. Bonham used the "Purdie Shuffle" in "fool in the Rain"

  • yes he certainly did! Do you know where he got the drum break from "Whole Lotta Love?" I'll give ya 5 bucks if you can guess the drummer.

  • Gregory S. Coleman of the band "The Winstons". Song "Amen Brother" I believe

  • actually, no. I'm referring to the part where Bonham solos and then the band comes back in with the guitar breaks. Bonham's solo was lifted verbatim from Art Blakey who did it about a year before Zeppelin recorded theirs. I saw it on a Bravo profile on Jazz. My jaw dropped. Maybe i can find it here on Youtube and i'll direct it over to you. The man had taste, that's for sure. And the chops to boot.

  • wonderful really wonderfully awesome.

  • this shit is heavier than nile

  • oh god i just had dejavoui

  • why does he always use the china as if it is a ride? anyway he is the best! best groove!!

  • Sweet mother of damn.

  • GOD!

  • He could have just played the cowbell and I would be smilin!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this guy has the groove so cracy i never

    heard something like this before

  • you right a special groove so amazing !!!

  • Bernard Purdie is the best drummer ever!

  • sweet

  • GOODGAWD

  • how can the audience only sit there? i would grab a bass :D

  • I know EXACTLY what you mean!

  • He's got good rhythm and feel. I noticed he uses the china cymbal often, and in some other videos too.

  • A good drummer knows how to play on crap drums too. This guy invented drum playing as we know it today.

  • Ya, considering his old age, he's probably had quite an impact on today's drumming, a very heavy influence. Especially since his drumming hayday was when rock was the biggest it's ever been. I'll bet if you listen closely, his style can be heard on some types of new music.

  • More please!

  • As an artist in Photoshop and oils, and an art teacher at a university, I think YOU must have some of that singing inside too. Thank you for expressing this so well. MCS

  • he is just great, this was amazing, well spent 3 minutes of my time!

  • MORE COWBELL!!! sorry had to

  • that cowbell groove is the funkiest thing on youtube

  • Look who's out there. Gadd comes close, but Bernard gets the musical nod.

Purdie has the most 'flavor' in his playing.

Not creative enough? Purdie is a drummer, not a clinician. He doesn't need a bunch of fast, odd-time licks to get peoples attention, they can feel it . Simple ... golden.

  • here here !....... gtao22

thats all there is to it with any instrument..

  • this dude IS the zone

  • very very nice

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent point. It's easy to get caught up in focusing on the technique of playing drums when you watch these videos or sit on your throne and practice, but it's clips like these that remind you of what it's all about. I've seen many where the drummer can play a very complicated fill with ridiculous 4-way independence and speed, but I could listen to Bernard Purdie do this all day. It's all about the groove.

  • oh damn, he's got such a nice feel, right in the pocket, and to runeroev, sometimes you don't need to be all over the place with your drumming, it can just be setting that one good groove

  • Now runeroev, I didn't say that was ALL he could do---I've seen him live, and he CAN play, as well!!

  • That is one of the most ignorant and ludicrous comments I've read on youtube. Missing creativity and feeling? Nonsense. To have watched this video and say that he plays with out feeling is just plain dumb. You obviously don't know who he is or what he has done and don't understand the history of the groove he is playing. You sir are a clown, sort it out.

  • Hey, now!!! Get it, Pretty!!!

He was always so tight with his grooves!

  • When that cowbell came in at 2:18 I jumped onto cloud 9

  • + 1

  • agreed.

  • it certainly doesn't need more cow bell !!!

  • incredible, simple as that :)

  • he's wearing a suit cause he means business!!
