  • 3 people have never slipped away :/

  • just heard this on Sirius Classic Rewind. What a great song!

  • This has ELO all over it,cant mistake Jeff's influence on it

  • This is a very busy and active video. Not hectic but still full of motion and energy.

  • Great racing song...NASCAR needs to adopt this! ;)

  • Jeff Lynne is a genius!! Dave Edmunds made this song rock...

  • Love this song! Chick is hot too! Wish she was in my pit crew!

  • THE most underrated song of just damn near all time. Dave Edmunds & Jeff Lynne=sheer genius.

  • Not stockers, they are super modifieds.

  • unless you have raced stox you won't get the vid .... it's simple and it's all there, stox are a way of life and it takes over, the girl friends and wifes get fed up, the tow car keeps braking down, the time spent in the workshop .... every stox driver is on his 2nd or 3rd wife ha! and never a dull moment .... stoke 4th dec "OUTLAW STOX" .... AND YES i'M ON A 2ND WIFE ...HA!

  • where are the three idiots who disliked this?

  • 1983 and my new college girlfriend goes back to her hometown for summer break...and back to her hometown boyfriend...and I knew we were breaking up. This was definitely NOT one of the vids to be watching on MTV at the time. But, heck, there it was.

And, yup, once we both got back to school, the b1tch blew me off.

  • Jeff Lynne makes everything sound like gold!

  • 3 people slipped away

  • @cleanandsober since when did videos have to make sense? especially from the 1980's.

  • @colezig37 I guess you're right about that one. Do they even make music videos anymore?

  • Could someone please explain the video to me? I hear a great song, I see a beautiful woman and I see a lot of cars going around in laps. I get the fact that she is a mechanic and works in the garage that Dave Edmunds and ELO are performing this song in. I just don't understand how she gets to the side of the highway towards the end of the video?

  • @cleanandsober2009 Well...let's see...you got fast cars, rock-n-roll, hot babes, and guitars....No explanation needed! :)

  • One of the most underrated songs of the 80's.

  • I agree that it's a great tune. In fact, it's AWESOME! It did hit #39 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1983, but it should at least peaked within the Top 20. Killer track, nonetheless.

  • Love a girl who can weld.

  • didn't jeff lynne help produce this album from dave.? it sounds like jeff's music

  • @runningman77 Jeff wrote the song

  • Best ELO song that ELO never made.;-D

  • Jeff Lynne could have easily sung this song.....<3

  • Dave hit #39 in Billboard, 7-30-83. Written and produced by Jeff Lynne. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • @skifan07 It looks to be a Longhorn.

  • Such a great chorus!

  • I love the twang that Dave's Danelectro has.

  • Dave looks cool with that Danelectro...

  • GREAT VOICE

  • this tune rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dave's one of the most underrated guitarists of all time but as decent as this song is it would've been so much better if he added some hot guitar licks & hooks in it. Needs a good guitar solo.

  • UNDERRATED TUNE !

  • where can I find that girl

  • @StephenLutz1

    In my bed most nights.

    DO NOT DISTURB !

  • Is it just me, or does Dave kind of resemble Eric Carmen?

  • Starting at 3:22 is the intro to Take Me On And On... I swear...

  • This was "The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift" plot right? This song always rocked me! I love me some DE Twang and ELO.

  • This was "The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift" plot right? This song always rocked me! I love me some DE Twang and ELO.

  • Wasn't this the plot for "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"? Great racing, bad traction and hot chicks :-) This song always rocked me - DE Twang meets ELO!!

  • Wasn't this the plot for "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"? Great racing, bad traction and hot chicks :-) This song always rocked me - DE Twang meets ELO!!

  • great rock& roll song. saw this video years ago. haven't seen this in a very long time.

i was told that electric light orcestra backed him up on this song

  • @jw12061 ---yeah,Jeff Lynn helped him on it.

  • @jw12061 It was produced by Jeff Lynne. He and Dave played the instruments

  • great rock& roll song. saw this video years ago. haven't seen this in a very long time

  • a danelectro baritone guitar and jeff lynne´s production wow amazing

very cool tune thanks i love it.

  • To those who think the blonde is Carlene Carter...I'm not so sure about that. I saw a pic of Carlene from the All Music Guide & though she's blonde & hot (Carlene) doesn't look all that much like the blonde beauty in this vid. It can't be her. But prove me wrong.

  • Sounds like "ELO" with "Ozzy-light vocals´ish" .-) fine song!

  • Thank you for posting this song, i just love it, Hail to the 80's :-D

  • I taped this song a bunch of times in 1983 off AM radio. Always thought it was a Canadian band :S. Listened to one of my old cassettes in the past month, & then last night heard this on some Sirrus Station. "I hear you knockin" I had no idea it was one in the same guy!

  • @Rickenbacker1985 He was also in Rockpile with Nick Lowe. He's the guitarist on "Cruel to be Kind."

  • Even though they sound NOTHING alike, for years, I'd get this song and "Modern Day Delilah" mixed up in my head...

  • Can't watch sprint car racing without this song running through my head- and I think Dave is playing a Danelectro Longgorn

  • Can't watch sprint car racing without this song running through my head

  • Great song.....Viva la 80's!!!!

  • Love this old song! Too bad ELO went all bubble gummy, but at least JL continued to work his magic with other artists.

  • I have been looking for this for ever, great another MTV video from the days of real MTV awesome song love it.

  • Best ELO song ELO never made (though I am aware that Jeff Lynne produced it).

  • not carlene carter. a 80's video model i'm fairly sure.

  • One of the 80s forgotten classics. The song did not get higher than 35 on the Billboard charts. Too bad it did not get more attention. Good to see this video again.

  • loved this song.

Now on the old 80's I-pod

  • Doesn't hurt to have a hot girl in a vid;

  • I remember this vid on MTV, I loved it, never remember the song being on the radio though. When MTV was MTV and I was young.

  • my favorite type of music - a great songwriter, an electic guitar, bass and drums, catchy beat. no choreographed dancing or women in lingerie.

  • Carlene Carter. Johnny Cash has a step daughter, That's who the girl is.

  • @bugzappers2112 She was once married to Nick Lowe, Edmunds former bandmate in Rockpile.

  • She also duetted with Dave Edmunds on "Baby Ride Easy".

  • Yes, when MTV was MTV. Great memories...... great song

  • the best year for music 1983

  • @MrDeerecub1977 Absolutely agree!!

  • Oh yeah ! Your Slipping away ! I feel this song has way too many memories tagged to it !

  • again, daughters name lol im 45, anyway i heard this at work tonight, and i too had forgotten about it. i just searched the internet over to find this. lol. thanks for posting it.

  • love this song, thanks for posting. i completely forgot that it even existed

  • AWSOME SONG!

  • Hit #7 rock, #39 pop in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • @DaveWollenberg Uk chart position was # 60. Amazon UK has it as Dave`s second most popular download in the UK ( and also at # 8 )

  • One of my most fav 80's songs !!

  • Fantastic song - great singer! My dad played his records all the time. If you've never listened to his stuff, give it a try! He rocks!

  • This song should have been a number one hit, I don't get how a song this good doesn't get the credit it deserves

  • @DjPyro2010 ----I VERY MUCH AGREE WITH YOU!

  • @DjPyro2010 I agree with you, but there was a lot of competition back then....It should have gotten more recognition though..New Wave music started hitting then and that's what was starting to sell, so this tune was just a victim of ill timing.....

  • @DjPyro2010 Dave Edmunds, in general, has never gotten the credit he deserves.

  • nice vintage dannelectro.

  • He kinda reminds me of Brian Adams in this clip.

  • "Producer, Jeff Lynn was at his zentih during this time!"

  • It's a great song, but the processing on the guitars and the snare drum really crap out the production for me. Let Dave play guitar through a real amp and have a real snare pop and it's a classic.

  • "I would welcome a different version of this song with Dave Edmunds playing guitar differently!"

  • "Four Little Diamonds" with Electric Light Orchestra and "Slippin' Away" with Dave Edmunds is very much the same song. Jeff Lynne and Dave Edmunds worked together sometimes back in the 1980's. Rock on!

  • @allaboard70 YOU ARE 100 PER CENT RIGHT!!!! JEFF LYNNE'S NEW ALBUM OUT SOMETIME IN THE SPRING OF 2011!!!

  • I remember this video got a lot of playtime on MTV, when MTV played only music videos. Those were the good old days. Thanks for posting.

  • luv this song and dave edmunds!!!hes great!

  • Good song. I'm looking for the lyrics to "Rules of the Game" off of his subsequent record, "Riff Raff". I can't find them online. Anyone know where I can find them?

  • In my house, lol

  • Great 5*****

  • Ohh slippin away...

  • Used to LOVE this song.

  • Dave on the Road Again :) Slippin' Away !!

  • Great shot at breaking US. If it failed, can only be because they didn't have fake boob bikini chicks, slick cars, and MTV play- Somebody let him down this is should've sailed up American charts

  • e.l.o. is involed in this song

  • it does sound like Jeff Lynne production

  • Jeff wrote the song, not Edmunds.

  • @cindyshealed

    Jeff wrote and produced it.

  • MrDeerecub1977,I have to disagree, those are the FUN ones!!!

  • stay away from women that look that good.they cause pain

  • this didnt even get into the uk top40 but got in at #39 in america in 1983. Love the real racing footage in the video!

  • Absolutely - $1,000,000 worth of [Duane Eddy] Twang!

  • You can tell that Dave was influenced by Duane Eddy.

  • I met a woman like that one time, a real life mechanic girl, she had some grease on her face just like that, sexy! She was married of course.

  • I remember this song from 1982, or so, when cable TV first came to our neighborhood, and MTV was only about a year old. I loved this then, and love it now. Dave Edmunds kept good company, with the likes of Nick Lowe, et. al.

  • love this thanks!!!

  • Man, who was that girl in the video???

  • Dude, I've been asking that for 25 years!

  • @kevinomreb I dunno but she's pretty damn hot especially when she changes clothes toward the end of the vid.

  • @kevinomreb by now ? shes 55 years old

  • @kevinomreb Just another pretty face....there's millions of them

  • This song and video are great! Thanks for the post!

  • So powerful...missed this video for a long time. So great to hear old D.E. doing that Robert Palmer/Jeff Lynne kinda sound...exciting to hear!!

  • Alzheimers is when your memory starts to go! What i gave was an opinion. When you responded were you jerking more than your knee?

  • This song is the sh*t! Thanks!

  • Demolition Derby !

  • Best Damn Rock and Roll Guitar in a Video...

    Ever!

  • classic

  • Great video, great singing by one of the least appreciated acts of rock - Rockpile. Rock on Dave.

  • I agree with Zephyr. There is no way chartage = the quality. This is classic pop.

  • This was on the chart for only a week?? That's incredulous.

  • Written by his pal Jeff Lynne of ELO.

  • Underrated! Only reached #39 on the top 40 charts. Hit charts on 7-30-83 and only staying for 1 week.

  • I love ELO and that is why this song and the Riff Raff album are two of my favorites.

  • "Over 25.000 hits later...You deserve it Lex!"

  • Was that Jayne Bean in her younger jears???

lol :-) Great stuff, nice action shots!

  • The final BriSCA F1 Stock Car Racing meeting of 2008 is this Saturday at Birmingham Wheels raceway in Birmingham.. funnily enough.

  • Brisca F1!

  • Cool old school Brisca stuff

  • Anyone have the "pop up video" info for the whole video? When and where shot, what kind of racing that is? (apparently British of some kind), who the model is etc...

  • I can tell you that it's BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Car Racing (plenty of videos on you tube)

  • A classic! Enough said!!!

  • Who is that hot blonde?

  • A great song back from when both music and its videos had substance and meant something!

  • sounds like it could be on secret messages by elo

  • This song was written and produced by ELO Jeff Lynne. Surprise!

  • When MTV was worth the time to watch. Great song , great video and what a fox!! (THE GIRL)

  • Isn't that Carlene Carter?

  • Yeah - That girl was a knockout -- I kind of remember her in this video on an old MTV commercial, where some guy says something like, The phone lines are closed...Stop calling...The phone lines are closed

  • "When MTV was MTV."

  • so true...

  • I love the sound of that baritone guitar!

  • I remember seeing this video when it first came out, and I remember wanting a copy of the guitar he's playing.

    Thanks for uploading this!

  • i was with my ex when this song came out, it was telling something. linda p

  • One word...MEMORIES!

Thanks for the great post. I miss those days!

  • I agree with everyones comments. Great music from young happy days. Now if I could just remember the name of this song...lol

  • Reminds me of the Summer of 83 when I was 14 years old.. Classic MTV--Back when they played videos.....Classic Edmunds!

  • Yeah - I was 14 also in '83...I had bought his DE7th album around then...On it was the song Bruce wrote, 'From Small Things, But Things One Day Come', and there were two other awesome songs on it: 'Me & The Boys' and 'Bail You Out' -- Also found some old Triumph, April Wine and Duke Jupiter recently on this

  • From another who was 14 in 1983, this video sure does bring back memories! Back when MTV was good.

  • Aww, classic .... reminds me of when Mtv actually played music videos!!!

  • This guy is my dads cousin so i kinda grew up with this music

  • I haven't heard this song since I was 9 years old. Gosh do I feel old.

  • I heard this song playing out of the Flamingo in Las Vegas last week and it really took me back. I had to come to YouTube today to see if anyone posted this video. Great stuff. Thank you!

  • I feel like I should be going to study hall or ditching class.....

  • This Man is the M-A-N (geddit)

  • 4 minutes of fantastic music - thanks for posting!

  • Flashback! whoa!

  • Ahh,,,,, the memories, Thanks for posting.

  • SOMEONE FIND THIS BLONDE.. god...

Definitely a Jeff Lynne ELO Dave Edmunds collaboration...

  • Great song!

    Thanks for posting.

  • Yea 'Repeat'is his best solo.

  • Hey jiang13, get Daves "Repeat when necessary" cd. It has his best work on it.

    Randy

  • The man looks just like Robert Palmer!! Am I the only person who sees this? I thought it was Robert Palmer up until last week when I tried to find this great Robert Palmer song, Slippin' Away. But, I found out that it was Dave Edmunds. The song rocks. And, I love the 80's. God, what I would give to go back to the 80's. I hated the 80's at the time, but I love 'em now.

  • Yeah, you and me both - didn't have a clue how good things were back in the '80s...

WAY too many woulda-coulda-shouldas since then - but hell - here we all are.

Live on, my friend; Edmunds brings it back alive..\\!!!

  • Dave is great mates with status quo!

  • Truly the best of the 80s. This video rocks. Simple but effective. Thanks Dave for a sensational song.

  • yeah, Dave is cool!

  • God do I love British Blondes! She was beautiful. Who the hell is she though? This I've wanted to know now for more than 20 years.

  • I remember when MTV played the shit out of this video in 83.....that blonde is a fine piece of ass

  • I know it's ELO-ized, but I have always loved this tune and DE can play the heck out that harp shaped guitar (is it a Danelectro or something like that). He's a great producer too!
