unless you have raced stox you won't get the vid .... it's simple and it's all there, stox are a way of life and it takes over, the girl friends and wifes get fed up, the tow car keeps braking down, the time spent in the workshop .... every stox driver is on his 2nd or 3rd wife ha! and never a dull moment .... stoke 4th dec "OUTLAW STOX" .... AND YES i'M ON A 2ND WIFE ...HA!
1983 and my new college girlfriend goes back to her hometown for summer break...and back to her hometown boyfriend...and I knew we were breaking up. This was definitely NOT one of the vids to be watching on MTV at the time. But, heck, there it was.
And, yup, once we both got back to school, the b1tch blew me off.
Could someone please explain the video to me? I hear a great song, I see a beautiful woman and I see a lot of cars going around in laps. I get the fact that she is a mechanic and works in the garage that Dave Edmunds and ELO are performing this song in. I just don't understand how she gets to the side of the highway towards the end of the video?
I agree that it's a great tune. In fact, it's AWESOME! It did hit #39 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1983, but it should at least peaked within the Top 20. Killer track, nonetheless.
Dave's one of the most underrated guitarists of all time but as decent as this song is it would've been so much better if he added some hot guitar licks & hooks in it. Needs a good guitar solo.
Wasn't this the plot for "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"? Great racing, bad traction and hot chicks... This song always rocked me - DE Twang meets ELO!!

To those who think the blonde is Carlene Carter...I'm not so sure about that. I saw a pic of Carlene from the All Music Guide & though she's blonde & hot (Carlene) doesn't look all that much like the blonde beauty in this vid. It can't be her. But prove me wrong.
I taped this song a bunch of times in 1983 off AM radio. Always thought it was a Canadian band :S. Listened to one of my old cassettes in the past month, & then last night heard this on some Sirrus Station. "I hear you knockin" I had no idea it was one in the same guy!
One of the 80s forgotten classics. The song did not get higher than 35 on the Billboard charts. Too bad it did not get more attention. Good to see this video again.
again, daughters name lol im 45, anyway i heard this at work tonight, and i too had forgotten about it. i just searched the internet over to find this. lol. thanks for posting it.
@DjPyro2010 I agree with you, but there was a lot of competition back then....It should have gotten more recognition though..New Wave music started hitting then and that's what was starting to sell, so this tune was just a victim of ill timing.....
It's a great song, but the processing on the guitars and the snare drum really crap out the production for me. Let Dave play guitar through a real amp and have a real snare pop and it's a classic.
"Four Little Diamonds" with Electric Light Orchestra and "Slippin' Away" with Dave Edmunds is very much the same song. Jeff Lynne and Dave Edmunds worked together sometimes back in the 1980's. Rock on!
Good song. I'm looking for the lyrics to "Rules of the Game" off of his subsequent record, "Riff Raff". I can't find them online. Anyone know where I can find them?
Great shot at breaking US. If it failed, can only be because they didn't have fake boob bikini chicks, slick cars, and MTV play- Somebody let him down this is should've sailed up American charts
I remember this song from 1982, or so, when cable TV first came to our neighborhood, and MTV was only about a year old. I loved this then, and love it now. Dave Edmunds kept good company, with the likes of Nick Lowe, et. al.
Anyone have the "pop up video" info for the whole video? When and where shot, what kind of racing that is? (apparently British of some kind), who the model is etc...
Yeah - That girl was a knockout -- I kind of remember her in this video on an old MTV commercial, where some guy says something like, The phone lines are closed...Stop calling...The phone lines are closed
