Why can't this guy's country share some of the credit for his achievements instead of all this 老外，老外,老外 to identify him all the time? You Chinese people, do you know 诸宸, the famous champion Chess player from China? When we talk about her in Western countries, would you prefer that we refer to her as Chinese - or as a foreigner? Of course, you want us to refer to her as Chinese, because you want people to know that the Chinese are capable of doing great things. I want the same for my Western 同胞。

@bigbeing Actually the usage of the term "Western(er)" is similarly unprecise as laowai and would pose a close equivalent to that term...

@sanghacam You can assert that if you wish, but I find any term which means "foreigner" (i.e. with 外 in it) to be a real insult, whereas I don't feel that way about the word "Westerner". Why don't you draw two circles for yourself and on one, shade in the area which could be described as "foreign", and on the other shade in the area which is "West". Which is bigger? The area with the smaller amount shaded must be the more specific one don't you think?
