lol... all the devin townsend and james labrie fanboys... focussed on their idols instead of this magnificently layered composition. This song contains so much power!
BEAUTIFUL. my headphone blew out at the part where Rage is doing his thing at the end there. i almost cried. Devin Townsend and James LaBrie in the same song. Ohh lord. it's orgasmic.
@CyanideSovereign Not really. Rage is my favorite character. I can't help but think that if I was in this sort of coma, Rage would feature quite prominently, along with Pride and Reason.
wow Devin Townsend does rage so well, I stumbled on this album on a random forum on prog metal, best discovery ever. I already loved all of devin townsends work and dream theater and just got into Opeth so this album is perfection for me.
any metalsingers in here who have any idea of which vocal technique devin townsend uses in the second half of the choroses when he sings it an octave above the first half? sounds impossible! all in all he does some of the most insane screams i´ d ever heard on this record, in the end of loser! INSANE!
I LOVE the way they did rage here, but when it first comes in, in all three parts, it hits you with a big burst of loud and quickly quiets down a bit. It kinda makes the song seem nonlinear.
This doesn't happen on the album. I think it's only in this recording, or whatever was used to post the song on Youtube. Perhaps there's some sort of volume threshold when inputting.
Hmm, I'd have to disagree, since after he says how he basically turned into those he swore to get back at. It would make sense for Rage to repeat his chorus. Since it is really at that point where the lines are most appropriate, up until that point they were merely a precursor, in that point they show what it was foreshadowing.
I personally love Rage. I guess its something you have to get used to. Devin Townsend is one of my favorite vocalist, but when I first heard him I couldn't really appreciate him either.
I usually hate screaming vocals like him (and don't really like Strapping Young Lad), but I think he is implemented VERY well in this album! I love everything he does here, especially his "NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER" at the end of Loser.
I agree, I have never really been a fan of screaming as well. But at least in this album you are able to appreciate it and even understand what they say. It's awesome.
i think we can place the last rage chorus like the end of the thinking about what to do.. like if he just win this thought.... just my opinion and sorry for my non-perfect english it is not my first language.

don't get why everyone is so psyched about Devin in this one , i think this one is more Akerfeldt's time in the spotlight of the album.

@NyrockXZX It might be because Devin wrote and recorded his own stuff because that was the only he'd do it.
Either that, or Arjen Lucassen is the fucking master and can do whatever the fuck he wants because everything he does is win.

From a musical point of view, I think the song would have sounded better without the last Rage chorus.
But from a story/plot point of view, I think it was necessary. So I'm not sure.
