Danny Devito did an homage to this movie on anepisode in his series IT IS ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA..His character "Frank" ends up in a mental asylum.. The stage reminds you of the movie.. Plus, there is a Nurse that looks like Nurse Ratched plus a native American patient.. Hahaha simply Hilarious
I just saw this movie a couple of days ago... I can say it is one of the best i've ever seen but this trailer doesn't help at all!!! It's horrible. The chief appears 2 seconds with no impact on the audience and the nurse in one scene only! That's if we don't count the serious spoilers...
I saw this masterpiece when I was a senior in high school (1976) & thought it so realistic that I couldn't believe the patients were actors and not men committed to an asylum. Only in later years did I recognize Danny DeVito, Brad Dourif, Sidney Lassick, & Chris Lloyd. Michael Douglas was the producer, I think, & had a hard time getting funding for this movie but it cleaned up at the Oscars. Probably Nicholson's best role--and he's had a bunch!
Dude that nurse was a bitch. I would have killed her if I weer one of those dudes. I dont understand why Chief killed Mcmurphy though? Was it because there was no point in saving Mcmurphy cus he fell into the trap?
@RomaVictor73 It was just Taber he was called, McMurphy made up the "Dr" part when they chartered the boat, he said they were all from the state mental institution and made out they were all doctors, not patients. And the actor who played Taber is Christopher Lloyd, aka, Doc Brown from back to the future.
This is one of the greatest movies i have ever seen. Jack is awesome in this movie. After seeing this it was a tough decision as to which movie and which actor should have won the oscar cuckoos nest with nicholson or dog day afternoon with pacino. I think in the end this was slightly better but both are classics.
I own hundreds and hundreds films, and this one film sticks out as the incarnation of cinematic perfection. It has touched me in personal level, as like as a rilly close friend of movies. I have red the novel and still this is my all time favorite movie. Jack Nicholson makes the best screen performance of all time, and not only him, but all the other performances are 10++. Direction and writing are outstanding. Cocoo's Nest is like a platin statue, it never gets old, boring or forgotten
@jkiller990 Well, I've read the book and seen the movie, and the reason that Jack Nicholoson's charcter doesn't leave when he has the chance, is because he's become friends with the other patients and want to see what happened to Billy Bibbit. It's a lot about duty, responsibilty and self sacrifice.
for that time, the acting looks really realistic, style wise i mean, like modern, jack nicholson is an amazing actor, since then, and now. this looks like a good movie, im gonna watch it rite now.
FACT: the dirrector hired real people with mental illnesses to be in the background. they were not "crazy" enough so he fired them and hired actors instead. great movie, one of my favorites actually, but mental illness is not depicted right in this movie. just fyi
Although everyone tries to make a fuss about how Jack Nicholson was so great in this movie, which he was, people are overlooking the excellent direction, writing, and everything. Everything in this film is PERFECT
i agree with you a 100%. This film is the very definition of perfect! As you said, the writing, the direction, the actors and the actresses and don't forget about the powerful and emotional ending of the film. Its sheer and utter brilliance, and my favourite film of all time
@benpetrofsky Nobody is overlooking the writing but Nicholson is what made this movie which is why we make the fuss. Remember when Pacino and DeNiro each gave a helluva performance in Heat which had excellent writing and direction. Al and Robert DeNiro made Heat what it was because when Micheal Mann put it out on TV as LA Takedown in 1989 the acting wasnt good. Actors and actresses performances make or break a movie So Nicholson owned this movie. Period
HA HA! Dr. McMurphy... I love these creeps and lunatics... and I feel a certain closeness to this story because I live right around the corner from the VA Hospital where Kesey got his ideas for the book. He worked there and then so did I. Jack Nicholson and all the actors did a great job bringing this to life.
