Cristina Férnandez de Kirchner should be commended for taking a stand. I believe it's the strongest statement in favor of marriage equality by a Latin American president ever and people are right to say that even Obama has yet to stand up and say similar words. Having said that, though, Kirchner stayed absolutely mum on the subject until 3 days before the debate as the church increased the attacks.

She was heavily criticized by the mainstream media by "inviting" 4 Senators to go with her in the official trip to China. Those senators were opposing the bill. Then, she timed the trip to China, to have the Vicepresident taking her seat. As you know, the Vicepresident was going to vote agains if there was a tie.
