  • What a treat what a treat.

  • Haha johnny is hiiiigh !

  • Coal oil was the rural power for Southerners until FDR started the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) in 1935.

  • Johnny looked a little bit fidgety in this one. Was it part of the act, or just Johnny back then. If you know what I'm talking about.

  • @MrOutdoorsman32

Johnny had a drug problem back in those days. That might be the reason.

  • great!!!

  • SO HIGH ON BLOW THAT'S RIDICULOUS HAHAHHAHA BEST

  • Sweet and innocent. I miss Cash.

  • haha love it, two classy entertainers and two of the best bass/baritone voices to ever sing 'popular' music.

  • This is why I love Youtube -- a little ditty about the lean times and the comment section rages about buddhism ... I think someone could put on a video called "how to make a cupcake" and three comments in someone would have diverted it to politics ...

  • Johnny is flying high on dope- you can especially tell in the beginning of the clip when he is wiping his nose and also sticks his finger in his mouth- only a junkie does this type of stuff- watch his eyes. He is still great musician but most people cannot even tell. I would suspect cocaine.

  • Quit your squabbling and LISTEN to the lyrics.

Can you imagine living under those conditions?

No welfare, no unemployment comensatin no food stamps. You didn't earn it or grow it, you didn't have it.

  • Wow! And I thought Tennesse was lower than Jhonny, guess i was wrong...

  • That's just ...great stuff!

  • I came in my earpussy.

  • what year was this performance?

  • MADE MY DAY!!!

  • man were they ever young in this clip.

  • thank u my JOJO love this!!

  • LOVE THIS!!!!

  • @moproducer I looked at appaloosa42's post & yours; I'm a mite bewildered (not lost:-). Are Buddhists atheists, or so different from Christians that we cannot share any common goals? Don't we all cling to our religion (and sometimes also our guns, which are good for fun and defense:-) even when we are not dirt poor and unemployed? In a Christian country, a Buddhist ought to be free to have his religion; but in an anti-religious country, there is an illusion of freedom but nobody is really free.

  • @Cauthon75 Duh...that's sort of the point I was making. And by the way, no one is making you pick up a gun. You enlist on your own, these days. By the way, if you knew anything at all about Buddhism, you'd know that it is not a religion; it is a belief system and life philosophy. Many devout Christians are also Buddhists..

  • @Cauthon75 Oh, and some practicing Buddhists, such as my own family members, are indeed atheists. Buddhism itself does not offer worship to a deity.

  • @moproducer That's complete horseshit. Another effort by quasi-intellectuals to redefine words and history to suit their beliefs. And before you jump to all the wrong conclusions as I know you will, I am not attacking Buddists. As far as I can see Buddism is the most peaceful religion in the history of the world.

  • @RaibDarkin If you knew anything at all about Buddhism, which you certainly have yet to learn, you would know that it is not a religion. Let me suggest that you talk with your parents or other responsible adult, and perhaps under their guidance read some books on the subject. I'm not sure what's out there that is age-related, but perhaps a parent or adult friend/relative will help you.

I know devout Christians and Jews who are practicing Buddhists, and have considered it myself.

  • @moproducer Talking down to an imaginary person you created from my name is absurd. Religion: A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose of the universe. Usually involving devotional and/or ritual observances and often containing a moral code for the conduct of human affairs. Some people have tried to cut out the spirituality out of Buddism to try and make use of it's philosophy, but it doesn't grant them the power to decide the religion is extinct. Try telling them that in Tibet.

  • @RaibDarkin It's a free country, and you can believe what you want about Buddhism. For example, I've met people who mistakenly believe that Buddhists worship bugs! Please understand that someone will always disagree with you, and that doesn't necessarily make either party right. You'll learn this as you get older, and perhaps develop a tolerance and respect for the opinions of others. Have a nice day.

  • Before Gene Hackman & the Rainy Day Woman made a movie called The Quick and the Dead, there was another w/ same name, with Sam Elliott and Kate Capshaw. I like the old one better, more of a plot and still a great feminist tract. Among other fun one-liners: one of the outlaws says we should turn back, and his brother says it's too late; the first then turns back, saying it ain't never too late, less'n you're dead. We ain't dead yet, and some may yet survive, even with all our government's help.

  • Tennesse Ernie Ford was very popular through the 70's. His signature saying was, "Well, bless your pea-pickin' heart."

Google 16 Tons. My Dad had many of his albums, which were religious music, but he did more, including Mule Skinner Blues and The Ballad of Davy Crockett.

  • Wow- Johnny Cash was soooo young then!

  • OHHH MY GOSH!!!!!!! That is TALENT!!! They are sooo young here!!! heheheheh

  • True Greats of our times

  • they make a gr8 couple!!

  • yup it sucks they don't make and have good music like they used to. I play metal in bands but grew up on the classic country real tales and life for the back bone in america

  • gawt damn johhny cash loves coke... just as i

  • I grew up listening to these two, and I love them both very much. :)

  • amazing....2 legends together

  • My nephew said "This guy is spiderman in the movie" when he saw Johnny Cash :P

  • When was this recorded?

  • @tcoopster This is from an episode that originally aired May 12, 1960.

  • Beautiful! Vundah! They should'ah toured or did an albumn together.

  • Thank you for posting this! Two greats of American music!

  • thanks so much for posting this!! my dad is 74- and grew up listening to these in the south-we have lived near the beach in cali for 40 years- it gave him a BIG OLE SMILE-AND HE NEEDED THAT BIG TIME!

  • @possumsleeps

My Dad too! He is 77 and in the hospital. He was really happy to watch this and hear this music again. Thank you.

  • I Had so much fun playing the guitar that day i am luther

  • BAck in the TV day of TEF and even Red Skelton and Jimmy Durante, ( pre-1963) the country still officially acknowledged that all we are have is due to Divine favor. Many TV programs ended with a hymn, --Ole Ern's sure did and the comment 'Bless you peaa-pickin heart'; , and Skelton ended his with "God Bless' ; every schoolday in PUBLIC school started with prayer and bible reading. When a country refusus to acknowledge God's supremacy, His favor is withdrawn.

  • @appaloosa42 Tell that to my neighbor's kid, a devout Buddhist who was killed in Afghanistan defending your freedom to be a God-fearing Christian. Or was he also defending his freedom to not be plagued by your beliefs? Perhaps you should go die for your freedom.

  • thanks for posting this!

  • both such reach baritones

  • Awsome. These guys look to be gettin gon "Swell". :-)

  • Johnny seems almost bashful here, full of respect

  • Wow that Little Ole Pea Picker and The Man In Black who knew :>)

  • after johnny cash died america went to hell - just an observation

  • I hate to break it to ya, but America went to hell long before Johnny Cash died. :)

  • @Caeridwyn isn't that the truth though. He knew it as well.

  • @Caeridwyn Or maybe Johnny Cash went to hell and America stayed right here. What the hell are you talking about?

  • Anybody remember Ernie Ford on "I Love Lucy"? The funniest episodes ever made.

  • Not until you said it. Now I think I do remember that.

  • oh yes i remember those and they were hilarious!

  • I had never heard of Ernie Ford, I'm 25, until a co-worker snt me a clip w/him and his son Brian, which was too cute!! Now I can't stop googling this man, I love this era in our history when one could be proud to be an American...so many morals, values and respect for life have been lost and its refreshing to absorb these things in this crazy world we now live in.

  • Your a breathe of fresh air brother, I agree.

  • Tennessee Ernie Ford was my Great, grandmother's paper boy in Bristol, TN when they lived on Anderson Street. My grandmother had a picture of him with his arm around my great, grandmother's shoulder. She died in early 1962...of grief, so I'm told...after her daughter, my great aunt Eleanor was killed by her ex-husband a policeman from Kingsport, TN in a murder-suicide on Nov30,1961

  • @jezkey you are so right. i couldn't agree more

  • @jezkey I could not have said it better, especially the part about morals, values and respect for life being loss. Just wondering if TEF ows his soul to the company store.

  • @sr71ablackbird I believe, if the feds don't stop spending. we'll be owing our soul to the government "store"

  • @jezkey Your comment is so so true. This world is becoming a sad and angry cesspool of petty and meanspirited folks. People often warn against nostalgia, but I think safety, morality, pride in flag and nation, honsty and patriotism, a sense of kindness and decency are all things which are in short supply today. There are many who share your feelings, I am one of them.

  • @weareallvampires

WOW!!! I couldn't have said it better!!!! I love what you said!!!

  • @jezkey you said it! TEF was a great one! I am young also, although in my early 30s. If you like him, I would suggest you youtube as much Roy Orbison as possible. Also, look up/into Randolph Scott. A lot of great Americana in there! Stay on the golden road of americana!

  • @jezkey Funny thing is, people had exactly the same thoughts in the era this was recorded. In the old days everything was better, well.. they were not. You had murder, corruption and financial problems back then too.

The only thing that might be different was that people tried very hard to keep up appearances

  • @dordsediekie NO where near as rampant as it is today though.

  • @jezkey I'm still proud to be an American...

  • i am only 14 but big johnny cash fan great somg

  • wow johnny was tweekin on something

  • indeed

  • @lifewarrior2375 Ol' Johnny could eat pills like some folks eat Post Toasties...

  • "and put a tater on the end of it so it wouldn't spill" hehe

  • go on johnny! gurning like crazy!

  • Wow...Johnny is so high in this video. He is truly punk rock.

  • Ernie is the best ! I call my ford Ernie :)

  • Ernie Was Like Miss June Carter, A Good Comedian As Well As A Fantastic Singer,,,,Excuse Me,,,Sanger

  • So love these two.

  • "hows the missus? is she here? we can have dinner after awhile" if you asked that of a co-worker today youd be looked at like you had a dick growin' out of your forehead (i know because i speak like this to folks i work and live around. i like to think they love me for it because they know where i stand.).

  • Beautiful! This shows what made America, not today's rich and spoiled Hollywood types crying over everything not of their creation. These men reflect the humility and raw power of American people which NBC et al want to kill.

  • yes yes and yes

    Cash and Ford ARE America

  • It's so good to see people who appreciate just how gentlemanly and humble these guys were/are. So different than the morally vacant Hollywood of today. We need to resurrect the Greatness of America by supporting new Hollywood types showing themselves on Big Hollywood who aren't letting the liberal elitists push them around.

    Thanks The Chrisnew.

  • You had me up until you started saying things like Big Hollywood and liberal elitists, but musicians didn't "make" America, laborers did, mostly minorities (you're welcome, by the way). Musicians just merely reflect such this "power" into their music.

  • "Mostly minorities" is BS. You are right about laborers building America, very much including ALL minorities (defined as they are today by the liberal elitists of academia) in the creation of the greatest experiment in human freedom in the History of Man, clearly anywhere on earth today. Laborers and musicians once were mostly one in the same. Surly you don't compare Brittainy Spears to Johnny Cash or the Temptations. I think Hollywood elitists are America's hypocritical liberal excrement.

  • greatest experiment in human freedom in the history of man?

Rome would like to have word with you.

  • Indeed, this country was built on the backs of the polish, italian, irish, chinese immigrants and sadly also black slaves.

  • @Earlwood Just a point: Both Johnny and Ernie were card-carrying national members of the American Federation of Musicians, The Screen Actors Guild and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists; all AFL-CIO.

Cash was a lifelong Democrat who publicly supported Bill Clinton and flatly stated that he did not vote for George W. Bush. He was well-known as an activist in the 1960s.

So...I guess you could call them "liberal non-elitist, Big Hollywood musician laborers".

  • weird matchup..but great just the same.

  • Thanx for this brilliant clip sent to me Androclestipster!

    Fabulous.

  • To be alive when the greats were, and to experience them like a lot of people did! Extremely brilliant and legendary.

  • Two legends together, simply great!!!!

    Nothing more to say. *****

  • "Looks like it's pickin' time!"

    Classic!

  • That was so effing cool!!! The only time I ever saw Ernie Ford was when he was on I love Lucy. Ernie and Johnny are perfect together!! Great vid!!

  • Way back in the early 70s TEF was on Hee Haw singing a couple of old mountain songs with Grandpa Jones and Stringbean(before he got killed). What a live stage show with these three would have been like can only be imagined. I keep hoping that someone at HeeHaw saved that video and it will appear some time.

  • I miss those southern accents. You don't hear it much here in Arizona. Sometimes I do miss home and those accents...God bless & RIP, Ernie & Johnny.

  • That was the best.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • precious!

  • So funny thanks for the post.

  • That was very sweet! Thanks for the opportunity to listen and watch this great clip!

  • Priceless! Thanks for that. Brightened my whole day. It don't get much better than that. Reminds of here recent, when we started canning a little extra "come pick'in time." H

  • What's the name of this Song???

  • "Pickin' Time"

  • "Y-you broke one of your wyres!" I love that!

  • Yes,the America that we knew back then has gone to the dogs, these two guys were the best!

  • That was a different America. Too bad it's not still around.

  • It still is, just in a different form. I can still go down the street, and share a beer with my neighbor. And he can walk up and share one with me. And we both get together and take care of troublemakers, in our neighborhood. America is still here!!!=Stefan=

  • HELL YEA & YEE HAW!

  • Fabulous! Two of my favorites together. Thank you so much for the post!

  • Johnny Cash is a great, one of the greatest of all times in any genre..but he was off his cake on this recording, if you cant see it ur fucking blind

  • Why is Cash sucking on his finger in the begging? Is he all drugged up?

  • He cut it at the broken string... listen to what they're saying ;-) ("You broke one of your wyres!")

  • I grew up listening to both of them. It's hard to believe they're both gone now.

  • both are legend.

  • Wow, nice rare video of Johnny Cash! You made my day! Ain't he a cutie..

  • wow very nice songs!!

they´re very funny in this video

    anyway 5 stars

    greetings from germany

  • you tube is just full of wonderful classic clips of stars of the past this is one them.

  • now that is a classic !!!! so great to see these guys together in their prime.

  • I'm not trying to be argumenative, but Tennessee Ernie and Johnny Cash were much more than barintones. They were true basses, and I wish we had more in the main stream today. I've got nothing against tenors; I think the market is just a little saturated.

  • wow, that's what i call real entertainment.

where are artists like them today?

  • Hey Toxiferin! I just have to tell you, if you like music like this, you should know that artists who do this kind of music gather in such places as the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV for five weeks every summer--especially during Vocal Week/Old Time Week, and at the Appalachian String Band Festival every first week in August at Clifftop, West Virginia. You'd be amazed at what you hear there, and the people you'd meet.

  • Cute song. :-) I love J Cash.

  • Composed by Merle Travis. Big crossover-hit for Ernie Ford in 1955.

  • Wow, just Wow.

    Those two great baritones.

    Glorious.

  • well this song is great but I wonder who sang 16 tons orginal song. Was it Johnny Cash or Tennesse Earnie Ford or perhaps someone else. Anyone who knows ? well I love them both. I'm just curious so please reply with the correct answer

  • I believe it was Merle Travis that wrote 16 tons.

  • Ernie made it what it is though!!!

  • tomorroe can always be better

people used to know that was true

  • What a wonderful remark Stroker1t.

  • Great! They are so fluid and natural together.

  • This is great! I love that song Pickin'Time!

  • 5 stars !

  • fantistic. thank you

  • great stuff. thanks for posting!

  • Thanks, its always great to hear Ernie Ford.

  • How great to see these two together! Johnny Cash was my dad's favorite singer.

  • This is great. Johnny, young or older--you gotta love him! Thanks for posting.

  • I think he cut himself! maybe?

  • he broke a string on his guitar that hurts like shit and often cuts you

  • how would you know

    you can't play

  • Talking to me?

  • It seems like John is kinda forgeting things. And what was with the finger in his mouth? Was he ganna boom-chicka-boom with Vivian after dinner? o_O

  • LAWL, I am sure they said things like boom-chicka-boom way back then

  • He was making a pun on the nickname of Johnny's sound.

  • it was actually a sexual reference but oh well.

  • I know, I thought that's what I said :S

  • Wonderful!
