I wore this tape out listening to it when the album came out. This album Brasil is one of the most artistic beautiful creations in sound I have ever heard. What a blessing to have this talent, and what a blessing for us to share it. And Peace to those who lived it.

I have this wish that they would have done more contemporary, politically charged world beat stuff like Brasil instead of much of the same-sounding retro stuff they usually do. This is a whole other Manhattan Transfer, and a better one in my opinion.
Another "different" MT project would have to be "The Offbeat of Avenues", which the quartet penned themselves. That CD has world beats, consciousness-raising lyrics, and social commentary messages... no wonder it didn't get that much airplay, huh?!!!
"Brasil" was definitely cutting edge for this combo and is still played on my CD player nowadays. There was a concert (can't remember the name of it) which aired on TV back in 1987 or 1988 and featured most of the tracks from this album. Wish I knew how to track down a video of it. Great album!!!
"Brasil" won best vocal of 1988, beating out Gloria Estefan & shocking everyone including MT! This is one of the weaker tracks, actually - this album is one of many, many brilliant compositions by THE BEST jazz/pop vocal group in the history of the planet. They are the Ella Fitzgerald of my generation. AND THEY ROCK!
You know, many a music lover has told me that, if they were stranded on a deserted island and only had a couple of CDs with them, this MT "Brasil" CD would have to be one of them!
I'm a metal musician and when I heard this for the first time in the early 90s, I became a fan and has changed the way that I blend and use jazz elements in my music.
