Growing up, my buddy's dad had this song and a bunch of others on cassette tapes long before the anthologies were released... other songs I can remember were an early beatles songs medley and talking with some interviewer and the interviewer and john began singing yer blues together then the song kicked in. I'm going to have to try and find those tapes next time I go to his house and post them on here.
@tarantulatook It is true. John was basically lying down with a mic on a chair and playing random notes on the piano and making moaning noises. I assume it was a mellotron organ because you can hear some accordion like music at some parts.
Sad because the only person alive that was part of this recording is Yoko Ono.
If you go to the Pink Floyd Discography/Archive list on the web it does mention this song under Syd Barrett non-LP material. Not sure how reliable the info is, but there is a whole lot of it on that web page.
Cobain was heavily influenced by Lennon. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (to me) is the earliest example of "grunge." It's so raw and heavy, much like Bleach.
@LowRider1500 it would have been awful since those are three extreme egos and also totally different styles. plus if they had tried that out they would have had an insane barret, a distracted lennon, and a 1 year old cobain
actually believe it or not Syd was a member of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, an EMI labeled band. They only had one album in 1967, but it's considered among st the most innovative of all time. Other members included Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and a few other friends. You wouldn't understand...
Syd Barrett is my idol. I was reading about this song, it wasnt until I saw this video that I realised he had anything to do with the song, thanks a lot for uploading!
I gotta say, I've heard a lot of people say that they don't like this song. Maybe because it was hyped up as a lost Beatles song for many years and nothing can possibly live up to the expectations of a "lost" Beatles song. I think the song pretty good. I love abstract Lennon and this is definitely abstract, but at the same time, its fairly catchy. does it compare to Strawberry Fields or I am the Walrus? No. I'd put it somewhere in the middle of Lennon's works.
EMI documentation has it as John, Yoko, George and Mal Evans. Recorded in August 14th 1968. Source: The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, by Mark Lewisohn.
To me being a beatles and Floyd lover, I definetly hear roger waters effects as well as richard wright but there is a very small guitar riff in there and it's barrett. I do question the rest of the beatles being there I this it was lennon and floyd. Thanks for posting!
@TheJDEproductions John lennon sang and george harrison was on guitar. not to mention john also played the piano. the other intrument's payers were not mentioned. NEVER mess with a beatles expert.
Syd Barrett could not have been present at this record, let alone appeared on it. He left Floyd in April of '68 and this was recorded in August of '68. Sydless Floyd may have recorded at the studio with Gilmour, but Mr. Barrett was definitely not there with them.
That would make more sense, however Barrett, when not in Floyd, didn't really do any psychedelic stuff (at least not any that was released). His solo stuff was almost entirely acoustic.
@clockworkfiction3 Syd Barrett was definitely not on this track, but his solo stuff wasn't all acoustic. Every track on his second album had overdubs, including Syd playing amplified electric guitar on some tracks. I'd definitely call Dominoes a psychedelic song. Rhamadan, which was released as a download, is psychedelic. Lanky (Part One), Swan Lee (Silas Lang) and No Good Trying are, too.
I do agree he mostly went with a much more stripped down sound, though, and plenty of acoustic work.
@clockworkfiction3 Oh, and also the song Late Night has Syd playing really good electric slide guitar.
I don't think it's unreasonable to believe John was influenced by Syd on this track, but yeah, Syd's definitely not on here. It's a shame they never recorded.
I think that John was influened by Frank Zappa as well. You can hear Franks influence all over the track. It funny,Lennon would even Jam with Frank Zappa in 1971 at the Fillmore East in New York City.
Interesting. Barrett and Pink Floyd recorded The Piper At The Gates of Dawn while The Beatles recorded Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band in Abbey Road Studios. Maybe Syd and John meet. Who knows?
@SantiagoUscocovich1 Pink Floyd visited The Beatles when they were recording Lovely Rita. It is kind of possible that they have helped recording some vocal/sound effect (I always though the "vocal tambourine" sounded very Barrett-esque), and Lovely Rita might have influenced (or have been influenced by) Pow R. Toc. H, but no one can tell for sure.
So yeah, Syd and John definitively met. As well as Paul, George, Ringo and Roger, Nick and Rick.
@SantiagoUscocovich1 the technicolor dream was a 14 hour concert.. i have a dvd about it.. it was in 1966 and syd and floyd played there for hours and john was in the crowd.. this song was released 1966 on an anthology so this is probably where he got the influence from.. and they have met in abbey road during the sgt pepper sessions

The Beatles actually use the cash register from money in yellow submarine because Floyd left it at Abbey Road. Syd wasn't in the band then obviously, but still interesting.
@cskg25 The first Pink Floyd album was released in 67, and is still the band's most psychedelic album... And the author of this video is talking about Syd Barrett, the first leader of Pink Floyd, who was expelled in 68. And that's true, this songs really sounds like it was written by Syd. He needed someone to kick him in the pants and say "make your own decisions and don't make me the bad cop for you." May Pang tried and directly she tried, he fled.
@ladypeinforte It sounds like he truly needed or wanted to be dominated and when the realization would hit him , the tough guy in him would run or fight. That can be exhausting to all concerned after awhile !
They had been recording many tracks of a similar nature, most of which appeared on 'Two Virgins' . The 'Syd Barrett' theory is yet another 'internet myth' about The Beatles. If anyone was present in the studio (apart from Mal Evans, the engineer and George Martin) it was always noted in Mal's studio notes and by Mark Lewisohn in 'The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions'. People who suggest such things (of which there are many) are usually ex-fringe people coming up with crap to sell a book.
@ipolson Not too untrue. Pink Floyd Wth Syd WERE fans of The Beatles' work. they were present durring the recording of Lovely Rita. It wouldn't be wrong to assume that John dug atleast some inspiration from syd :)
@beatles123: Where did you hear that ? I have all the session notes from Mal Evans, he does not mention it, it is also not mentioned in 'Complete Beatle Recording Sessions', nor does George Martin in his book on the recording of Sgt Pepper '. So unless John, Paul, George, Ringo, Mal, Neil or George Martin said it, I dont believe it. Read it on the internet did you ? Or maybe Pink Floyd said it. If they did, it certainly wasnt an event noticed by anyone in the Beatle's inner circle.
@beatles123: In interviews PM has often spoken about the odd person who would 'pop in' but never mentioned it. Have nothing against Pink Floyd. In fact I bought 'Piper ' and 'Saucerful of Secrets' when they came out, also 'The Madcap Laughs' t. I like both The Beatles AND Syd, but I only believe things connected with the Beatles when they come from the 3 people in their inner circle, who know the facts. There are a million myths about The Beatles, 99% wrong
@beatles123 Firstly Norman Smith took Pink Floyd into a Beatles session for a short period the Beatles made them all unwelcome by ignoring them ,and they left! and if this song is the extent of Barretts influence, God help him!
This is nothing to do with Syd Barrett whatsoever. And he was not present at the recording, per the studio notes and report on this song in The Beatles Monthly at the time by Mal Evans. And per 'The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions'
Both John and Paul were experimenting with tape loops and avant guarde music in 1966, before Syd Barrett became known. It is 100% influence by Y.O. Another 'internet myth' about The Beatles
From my understanding, it's not the influence of Syd Barrett... but it was the influence of Yoko Ono. Heck, don't you hear Yoko singing "Mary Jane" in the background? John was influenced by the music Yoko had made when they 1st met. This was to be the intended release for the "White Album" but John decided to to go full-blown with Yoko's style of music with and replaced this song with "Revolution 9".
Syd Barrett had no influence on this song, let's be realistic. The fact is Pink Floyd was recording their first album at EMI the same time the Beatles were doing Sgt Pepper, that's the only connection. When the Beatles recorded What's the New Mary Jane in 1968 and 1969, Syd was already an acid casualty, so he had NOTHING to do with this. I like this song, though I can easily see why it wasn't released, and Revolution 9 is brilliant, and the people who hate Revolution 9 are idiots.
Ah, give the Rev 9 haters a break. You have to admit, it's not an easy piece to access. I do appreciate the track, although it definitely doesn't flow from the rest of the album.

Ok i thought I was open minded and all and was getting into the beatles... but this song is shit! I like the lyrics... but unless I was high.. I wouldnt put this on my ipod... if it was it would always be skipped!
@naamara you avant-garde a clue then bra, this is surely an acid infused collaboration between barrett and lennon, the acid was also primarily used to create other great songs. turn off your mind and listen.
You guys know that song "My First Kiss" by 3OH!3, right? Yeah, this is a million times more enjoyable to listen to than that ungodly piece of scheisse.
Mais c'est flagrant comment What's the new mary jane fait "Interstellar Overdrive" :D
@SeanIsaacBillings Errm... yeah i suppose so; I AM A HUGE FLOYD FAN!!! though. i have all the albums from piper to final cut( Didnt want the last two)
@thenowuk barret and lennon were friends, and in the same studio the same day, each recording a song with that chiming bell (bike/syd - whats the new maryjane/john)
@ruufeeooh that is nonsense-see the official EMI recording sessions to see who was on this session-infact Lennon only ever met Syd once when The Beatles went next door to see The Floyd recording Piper. Bike was recorded the year before this track which is from the white album sessions......it makes a nice tale that they were friends etc but they were not.
as much as i hate yoko i must admit i enjoy her vocals on here. this should of replaced revolution #9. (this was record for the white album wasnt it?)
Growing up, my buddy's dad had this song and a bunch of others on cassette tapes long before the anthologies were released... other songs I can remember were an early beatles songs medley and talking with some interviewer and the interviewer and john began singing yer blues together then the song kicked in. It seems like John Lennon invented Animal Collective.

People who suggest such things (of which there are many) are usually ex-fringe people coming up with crap to sell a book.
ipolson 1 year ago
@ipolson Not too untrue. Pink Floyd Wth Syd WERE fans of The Beatles' work. they were present durring the recording of Lovely Rita. It wouldn't be wrong to assume that John dug atleast some inspiration from syd :)
beatles123 1 year ago
@beatles123: Where did you hear that ? I have all the session notes from Mal Evans, he does not mention it, it is also not mentioned in 'Complete Beatle Recording Sessions', nor does George Martin in his book on the recording of Sgt Pepper '. So unless John, Paul, George, Ringo, Mal, Neil or George Martin said it, I dont believe it. Read it on the internet did you ? Or maybe Pink Floyd said it. If they did, it certainly wasnt an event noticed by anyone in the Beatle's inner circle.
ipolson 1 year ago
@beatles123: In interviews PM has often spoken about the odd person who would 'pop in' but never mentioned it. Have nothing against Pink Floyd. In fact I bought 'Piper ' and 'Saucerful of Secrets' when they came out, also 'The Madcap Laughs' t. I like both The Beatles AND Syd, but I only believe things connected with the Beatles when they come from the 3 people in their inner circle, who know the facts. There are a million myths about The Beatles, 99% wrong
ipolson 1 year ago
@beatles123 Firstly Norman Smith took Pink Floyd into a Beatles session for a short period the Beatles made them all unwelcome by ignoring them ,and they left! and if this song is the extent of Barretts influence, God help him!
jsilence418 1 year ago
This is nothing to do with Syd Barrett whatsoever. And he was not present at the recording, per the studio notes and report on this song in The Beatles Monthly at the time by Mal Evans. And per 'The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions'
Both John and Paul were experimenting with tape loops and avant guarde music in 1966, before Syd Barrett became known. It is 100% influence by Y.O. Another 'internet myth' about The Beatles

Well, direct allusion to pot.
Marijuana = Maria Joana = Mary Jane.
Different language, same godlike plant.

In regards to Yoko: I’m not surprised that the most annoying voice comes from the most annoying woman.
EricDymond 1 year ago
From my understanding, it's not the influence of Syd Barrett... but it was the influence of Yoko Ono. Heck, don't you hear Yoko singing "Mary Jane" in the background? John was influenced by the music Yoko had made when they 1st met. This was to be the intended release for the "White Album" but John decided to to go full-blown with Yoko's style of music with and replaced this song with "Revolution 9".

lol, I thought that was so obvious, it didn't need a reply!
I like the pairing of Syd & John, though. Two kindred souls, in some ways, trying to hit the same artistic target, each from their own perspective.
DonGenarosDog 1 year ago
Syd Barrett had no influence on this song, let's be realistic. The fact is Pink Floyd was recording their first album at EMI the same time the Beatles were doing Sgt Pepper, that's the only connection. When the Beatles recorded What's the New Mary Jane in 1968 and 1969, Syd was already an acid casualty, so he had NOTHING to do with this. I like this song, though I can easily see why it wasn't released, and Revolution 9 is brilliant, and the people who hate Revolution 9 are idiots.

@chillroom
Ah, give the Rev 9 haters a break. You have to admit, it's not an easy piece to access. I do appreciate the track, although it definitely doesn't flow from the rest of the album.
DonGenarosDog 1 year ago
@DonGenarosDog Thanks for the courteous reply. Still,. What's the New Mary Jane has nothing to do with Syd.

naamara 1 year ago
@naamara you avant-garde a clue then bra, this is surely an acid infused collaboration between barrett and lennon, the acid was also primarily used to create other great songs. turn off your mind and listen.

@naamara chill out,it's just Lennon and friends messing around, not an official 'song'

Mais c'est flagrant comment What's the new mary jane fait "Interstellar Overdrive" :D

@thenowuk barret and lennon were friends, and in the same studio the same day, each recording a song with that chiming bell (bike/syd - whats the new maryjane/john)
ruufeeooh 1 year ago
@ruufeeooh that is nonsense-see the official EMI recording sessions to see who was on this session-infact Lennon only ever met Syd once when The Beatles went next door to see The Floyd recording Piper. Bike was recorded the year before this track which is from the white album sessions......it makes a nice tale that they were friends etc but they were not.
