That a singer who sang such heavy repertoire as Rhadames,Manrico , Alvaro, Calaf, etc could take on this role that requires such agility and lightness is nothing short of remarkable. Corelli was truly outstanding and deserves his place as a superstar tenor. His reputation will only increase with time and all the detractors will fall away .Only the great voice and artistry of this man will remain. I had never heard anyone like him before and never wil again.

@gratecourt probably because it is in the wrong key. I mean its great but if you cant sing it as written then stick with what you can i guess. Its like domingo singing bflats for everything or a high b in che gelida...it just isnt the same. I mean its corelli, its great but you know the purists are the majority of fans. A great job by a great singer, but he never sang the role of Arturo. The tessitura is far too high for most spinto tenors, well hell, for most tenors!

Franco is how I was introduced into the world beyond Pavarotti. On stage, as I am told, his sound enveloped you, and his virile high notes were nothing short of pure ecstasy. He did however, have severe stage fright. Imagine that??

I have the "Poliuto" recording with Callas. At no point does he sing a D natural. Also, C# and Db are enharmonically equivalent; sorry I don't have the score to verify the key, but if you knew your music theory, you'd know there's no such key as "E double flat"...genius. Nice fail. BTW: Franco Corelli is my favorite tenor of all time; there's no way I'd ever hate on him, ergo, you blatantly misinterpreted the intent of my comment.

For a recent recording of a big spinto voice singing this aria live (in a production of "Puritani") check out Brian Hymel. Oh and he sings the Db.

I usually find Corelli very hooty and almost unpleasant to listen to (except in Trovatore), but this is rather remarkable- such a big voice, and then that High C! However, this performance lacks nuance, which surprises me, since Corelli did have a beautiful pianissimo. The problem I have with is voice is that it always sounds very pushed, and I can fell his technique grinding away.

@Nicrhind First of all: t's a C# and in the score cause it's composed in D not E double flat, genius, and second of all, a good amount of the time (even today) this aria is transposed a half step down. Even the people that perform it in the actual key mess it up sometimes. And quit being such a fucking Debbie Downer. He COULD sing the high C#. SHOOT, If you get the live recording of his Poliuto from La Scala NOT with Callas, he interpolates a high D natural! And besides, the C he sings is GREAT.

Thus it has a greater brightness than the high C and in some naturally high voices is rendered with an extraordinary, unearthly beauty and heavenly purity that is simply transporting and divinely arresting. In my humble opinion, the C sharp is the most beautiful note in the human voice, although with strong competition from the high B natural and high E natural.
