@OnnomonnomonnO Well, thank you Mr.Know it all. The sudden cut could mean anything, it was old, and a sudden movement from the camera man caused it to malfunction for a couple of second, even if he jump to the left, to lessen the impact, against a freaking rotor, he could have been sliced in half if it wasn't for the rotor having struck the tail..Well if it hadn't struck the tail, that wouldn't have happen. That would've been a better video though, getting cut in half.
@TheCherlux so why is that cut just at that point of video and never more ? .... I don't know all at all...just hate ppl who try to make real things from fake inscenations ...(no offence, mate )
...The Pilot. who of course was an airplane test pilot, was overconfident, and the controls were much more responsive than he expected. The tethers were unable to prevent the helicopter from bouncing and twisting. But they eventually solved these problems and the Bell 47 became very stable and widely used adopted. It was the helicopter in MASH and the Whirlybirds. I know this because Arthur Young was my uncle. Thanks for posting it!
some background. The speaker is Arthur Young, the designer of the Bell 47, which was the first helicopter in the US to get a commercial license. These film are actually preflight tests of the prototype. the test pilots had no idea how to use the controls to fly it. Notice the ropes tethering the helicopter. The idea was to hold the helicopter down, then slacken the ropes a little to give a pilot a few inches of room to feel the effect of the controls. But according to Arthur, the pilot
design/security failure: The rotor of a helicopter shouldn't be constructed in such a way that it is EVER possible for the rotor to hit the tail or any other part of the helicopter
@sleepingeye In order to build a counter-rotating rotor system in a way that would preclude fuselage strikes, you'd have to either a) armor the fuselage making it less efficient, b) limit the flexibility of the blade roots, making it less manueverable and prone to excessive vibration, or c) tilt the rotor heads away from each other, putting stress on the airframe and limiting lift. That's why it's been the same all these years since Piasecki pioneered it.
@largefather03 I'm not sure exactly what you're saying, but there have been variations, like Kaman's intermeshing rotors. But you're right about everything else. I don't think it's possible to make a rotor system totally safe from strikes; all you can do is try to stay within the designed flight limits. If you try bucking around wildly in any chopper, you're flirting with getting a tail chopped off or loosing a blade. Even a Kamov counter-rotating system will touch tips if you move too fast.
@justforever96 Sorry I wasn't clear; I was speaking specifically of tandem rotor systems... Counterrotating and intermeshing systems introduce a whole new set of variables including complexity. Funny, I was repairing K-Max parts today at work.
@sleepingeye A.) this was one of the very first choppers, and they were still trying to figure out if it would work AT ALL, and B.) they didn't have modern computers, etc, back then...they built them as well as they could, and had test pilots (aka men with balls of steel) try them out. They never had any expectation of the machine going through motions like that. A MODERN, FAA-approved copter that moved like that would probably hit it's own tail. The blades are light, flexy, and whip-like.
How stupid can you be to try something like this without seat and seat belt. He was lucky the blades didn't hit his head or he wouldn't be here no more.
@Terrr05 I think the plan was to move up and hover around a bit...I'm guessing not wearing a seatbelt was to ensure that one could escape in a crash, even if it meant getting thrown clear. Even race cars didn't have seatbelts until pretty recently. The drivers felt it was a better risk being thrown clear than being trapped in the wreckage, especially when you have a sheet-metal tank of 100+ octane fuel strapped behind you!
@plozking5 lucky for him it wasnt because the movement of the helicopter bouncing slowed down the blades momentary and that just so happens when he flew into them, which instead of chopping him just slapped him really hard breaking his wrist.
For those too dumb to know, this is real! Filmed in the early fifties in upstate NY. This is an early Bell design, the pilot was not Bell, but one of his supporters or engineers, I don't remember which.
@2wheelsteve How do you figure? You do realize whether it be the inner most, center or outer most section of the blade it is all still turning the same speed. The difference is the "distance" it travels in a given amount of time. Read up on rotational inertia in a physics text to see what I'm talking about.
@BLKJTakahashi Closer to the hub IS slower than nearer to the blade tip. The tip speeds can be transonic one some models. The RPMs are the same but the velocity is different. Also, the moment arm is shorter at that point; consequently, the torque and force are lower. "Distance traveled over time" IS the definition of 'speed.' Like "miles per hour" and "feet per second." Maybe you should finish your first week of physics before you start trying to teach the class.
looks like a dos equis commercial from worlds most interesting man. I believe it would go like this. A man so strong it tamed a wild helicopter by lunging himself against the blades to beat it's ass
On a HU500 he would have been a gonner. Two geologists walked downa slight slope towards teh helicopter even though everyone was screaming no go back. Lost their heads...husband and wife darwin got them
